16 days until Alabama Football: Paul Ott Carruth
We are just 16 days away from kickoff! Paul Ott Carruth was a halfback at Alabama from 1981-1984. Carruth was a contributor on Coach Bryant's last two teams. He rushed for 544 yards and scored 7 total TDs through the 1981 and 1982 seasons, helping the Tide win the 1981 SEC Championship and the 1982 Liberty Bowl. Sadly, Carruth's 1983 season would be slashed due to a serious knee injury, but he would recover to have a fantastic 1984 season. Carruth rushed for 782 yards (team-leading) and 8 TDs as a captain on the 1984 team. After graduating, Carruth signed for the Birmingham Stallions (USFL) in 1985 before starting a four year NFL career with the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs.

16 Days Away From Bama Kickoff: Richard Mullaney
Richard Mullaney didn't suit up for the Crimson Tide for long, but made his impact felt in the short time he was with the team. A transfer from Oregon State, Mullaney came to Tuscaloosa in 2015 and joined a wide receiving corps headlined by ArDarius Stewart and Robert Foster that also featured a freshman, Calvin Ridley.
While he was likely the lowest rated recruit in the room, Mullaney worked his way into the rotation by being a consistent target with sure hands and buying into the Nick Saban philosophy. In his lone season as a graduate transfer, the Thousand Oaks, CA native appeared in all 15 of the Tide's games and hauled in 38 passes for nearly 400 yards, ranking fourth on the team.
He helped Alabama return to the College Football Playoff and was a key contributor in its games against Michigan State and Clemson, catching four passes for nearly 100 yards.
After his time with the Tide, Mullaney went undrafted in 2016 and signed with the Houston Texans as a free agent but was waived before the start of the season. He saw brief stints with the Cowboys and Browns as well but was also waived before the season.
In 2018, Mullaney joined the AAF's Arizona Hotshots, but the league folded before the conclusion of its inaugural year. He joined the D.C. Defenders of the XFL in 2020, but once more, the alternate league folded, this time due to COVID-19.
Now, Mullaney resides in his hometown of Thousand Oaks and serves as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Thousand Oaks High School.

15 days until Alabama Football: Tommy Wilcox
We are 15 days away from kickoff! Tommy Wilcox was a defensive back at Alabama from 1979-1982. After redshirting and playing as a scout team QB his true freshman year, Wilcox started at safety as a redshirt freshman. He was fantastic right off the bat, intercepting four passes on his way to being named SEC Freshman of the Year. Wilcox would retain his job as starting strong safety for the duration of his career. When it was all said and done, Wilcox accumulated 253 tackles and 10 interceptions over the course of his stellar career. For his efforts, he was named First Team All-SEC and All-American on two occasions. After his Alabama career came to a close, Wilcox signed for the Arizona Wranglers (USFL) in 1983 and the Chicago Blitz (USFL) in 1984 before he was forced to retire from football due to a neck injury. After his playing career came to a close, Wilcox worked as a teacher and high school football coach at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa. Then, in the mid-1990s, Wilcox began his hunting and fishing show titled “Tommy Wilcox Outdoors” which has been a huge success and has featured many famous sports personalities.

UA released a short video of some highlights of the first scrimmage and Ty Simpson completed a pass rolling to his left while jumping into the air throwing against his body. It was a perfect spiral and strike. That kid must be some kind of an athletic freak!

14 days until Alabama Football: Don Hutson
We are 14 days away from kickoff! Don Hutson was a wide receiver and end at Alabama from 1932-1934. Hutson is widely regarded as the first modern receiver in football, setting the standard for the modern passing routes and techniques utilized today. At Alabama, Hutson played end for Head Coach Frank Thomas and was a teammate to fellow end Paul “Bear” Bryant. Hutson had the ability to make any defender miss and was very good at catching the ball in traffic. One of his biggest games for the Tide came on the biggest stage, in the 1935 Rose Bowl (1934 season) against Stanford, when Hutson caught six passes for 165 yards and 2 TDs. With the help of fellow Hall of Famer “Dixie” Howell, Alabama would go on to win the game 29-13 and be declared national champions for the 1934 season. After the game, West Coast writers hailed him as "the greatest pass-catching speed merchant end". For his efforts, Hutson was named First Team All-SEC and a Consensus All-American. In an attempt to name retroactive Heisman Trophy winners before its first year of 1936, Hutson was awarded it for 1934 by the National Football Foundation. After graduating, Hutson signed a contract with the Green Bay Packers and would go on to have a historic NFL career garnering so many accolades that it is hard to list them all. Hutson won three NFL Championships with the Green Bay Packers (1936, 1939, 1944). He was awarded the MVP award two times and was named a First Team All-Pro eight times. By the time his career was over, Hutson had LED the NFL in total receptions eight times, receiving yards seven times, receiving touchdowns nine times, total scoring five times, and interceptions once. Hutson holds the NFL record for consecutive seasons leading the league in points scored with five and most seasons leading the league in touchdowns with eight. After his retirement, Hutson was named to the NFL 1930s All-Decade Team along with the NFL 50th, 75th, and 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. Hutson is a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and the No. 14 is retired by the Packers in honor of him. Don Hutson was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951, the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963, and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1969. Don Hutson was simply one of the best players in the history of football.
