Exactly. Anybody who says "well Saban went 7-6 in his first year" as a way to compare it to CKD's first year just loses me right off the bat . People act like Saban inherited a world beater in 2007. He inherited an absolute disaster in 2007, so much so, that 7-6 was probably an overachievement that year. Deboer is doing well, but 2007 and 2024 are not even in the same universe. I really wonder if people have forgotten just how bad things were when Saban arrived
I think where you can compare the two is the response to failure. Though Nick went on to lose every game in November, even he (to this day) references the ULM lost as the "wake up call" loss. His response was to recruit like crazy, hire the best assistants he could and dominate.

CKD's response to failure appears to be headed in a similar direction. That's where I think the comparison is valid.

Team coming along...

Recruiting at a phenomenal pace...

Defense and the new system doing well despite youth, injuries, and transfers...

Offense needs to have a different style of QB but they are optimizing behind Jalen...

Overall positives and looking good. Just need to finish the season strong!

I think the LSU game made us look better than we really are. They had issues in the middle of their Defense and the Bama staff rightly attacked it. When Jalen is running north south he's about as dangerous as any player in college football and they just couldn't stop it. Alabama's running backs are not getting big stats but the notable improvement has helped the team tremendously especially in the second half of games.

I think at this point we all know Jalen's not the kind of guy who is going to take over a game from a quality opponent with his passing but if he can hit his hot reads, sting them with a run here and there, back off the safeties with a few deep shots and keep the offense out of negative yards we have the weapons to score and the defense has continued to improve.

I like where we are at but the three games remaining are going to be the season. They should win all three but all three teams are going to do everything imaginable to win and we have to meet the standard. Once we are in the playoffs I think this team will bring it. It's the games they should win that concern me.

As for the staff, they are young, they have made mistakes, but they appear to be learning and improving. I think in today's game it's all about improvement. You have to be playing your best ball at the right time.

CKD needs one more win to make history a win today would give him 8 wins CPB was 5-4-1 his first season CGS was 7-5 and CNS was 7-6 of course Ray Perkins won 8 back in 1983. this was give him 8 wins this season.

Yeah, I think he realized the "happy go lucky" persona was giving misleading impressions to the team. Because ever since then I've watched him on more than one occasion get into players and sideline coaches. Sometimes chewing butt is the best medicine for an instant cure.
Undervalued comment. Coach is learning self motivated athletes with something to prove can succeed with a soft touch and encouragement . Top tier athletes where everything comes easy to them sometimes need a push, even an in your face shove to be great.

CNS did inherit some good talent from Shula, but they were young. They were part of the improvement in 2008.
It wasn’t the talent, it was the culture Nick had to fight. There were good players . Remember, we had a team leader arrested for distributing Cocaine, 9 other players arrested, star players considered workouts optional, etc. That time period of Alabama Football reminded me of the movie Hamburger Hill .

That is not decent. That is Nebraska type recruiting. But there were 4 stars.
Agreed, decent / mid / whatever. It's not G5-level but there was obviously room for improvement. That said, it's hard to expect great recruiting when the program was in the dumps and the HC lacked the ability and/or discipline to get things in order.

I mean, not really?

Bama recruiting:
2004: 0 5*, 9 4*
2005: 0 5*,11 4*
2006: 1 5*, 12 4*

Obviously Saban juiced the recruiting, but Bama had decent (though not top-level) talent.
I would add that were several four stars or major recruiting “hits” that either didn’t qualify or wound up at Hargrave & never played a down for Bama. i.e., Mike Ford and a receiver or two (names slipped my mind). Shula seemed to be snake bitten when it came to the “big” names except Andre Smith.

It wasn't a coincidence that we had so many non-qualifiers during this time period. Coaches of all programs are well aware of the grade situation for recruits. One of the first things they ask when looking at a potential athlete is to see their transcript. Alabama was a program that wasn't getting top tier recruits back then for reasons we are all aware of. We took chances on some guys that others weren't willing to gamble on in hopes that they would pull through last minute. Shula and staff felt like the juice was worth the squeeze to try to get a 4* if somehow they became eligible late in the process. We don't see this anymore because we don't have to play the wait and see approach with guys and we can go after the blue chips who are "no doubters" when it comes to qualifying.

Right, this has been discussed at length on this board and another I was part of. That’s why so many of the SEC non-qualifiers wound up at Big East schools if they were able to get to D-1A. Their standards were lower.

I read where Nikita Stover is about to be eligible.
He just stepped down as HC of Decatur Heritage Christian Academy. So may be so, hahaha.

Seriously, though, he did a good job a DHCA. Our school beat them for the region championship this year. On that Friday night, at least, they were well prepared and coached.
