AJ or Sims ?

I don't care who is the #1. However, I don't want to lose either as a player. If one went down then you have the other.

I just want Bama to be 14 - 0 after all is said and done.

I'll just wait and see who Coach Saban picks and be 100% for the person he names. Coach Saban knows a lot more than I do about what's taking place each day in the weight room, on the practice field and in film sessions. I'll just let him CRITIQUE, then determine who we will see on the field in the fall.

I don't think he should have been too happy with either on Saturday. I don't think either one really stood out as saying that it's my job and there is no way you are going to get it. I will say that both looked good on SOME plays but not enough.

I really did want to see some bombs thrown and caught downfield on Saturday. I don't think that I saw any.

Looks like both have some work to do between now and the end of pre-season practice.

If I had to pick one right now and if the season started tomorrow, I'd have to go with #10. However, a lot of growing and learning can take place between now and September.

AJ is from Alabama. I can't help but pull for the in-state kid.

I don't care where either is from! Just win and go 14-0. Remember one of our greatest QB's ever was from Pennsylvania. If #14 from Virginia is a winner and a leader and can take Bama to the BCSNCG and win there, that will be just fine with me.

There were several throws where the QB looked not-so-good when it appeared that the receiver may have run the wrong route. The coaches will see some things that most of us won't catch.

I'm worried about the low-experience factor for both QB's.

Yeah, how come? Huh, huh huh? Good grief.

You're right CT. No one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition.

Do you really think that - that AJ will be awarded the job unless he "completely breaks down?"

Ok, maybe "completely" is too strong a word.

I still believe it's AJ's to lose. I just don't think AJ will do anything bad enough to lose the starting nod. Now, with saying that, I do think both will play early in the season.

I hope we don't have a 2 QB system.

I think if Phillip Sims is named the starter right now, or in the fall, we will be in a better position in 2012 than if it is AJ. That's just my opinion. I think the fact that they are so equal and AJ is a year AHEAD says something. So take Phillip, and then fast forward a year from now and you've got Phillip in the exact same place as AJ is right now, eligibility wise, but no doubt better and smarter. I think if they are equal, you go with the younger guy. Though, I like AJ a whole lot and don't want to lose him

I don't think CNS wants to lose one either. I've tried not to be cynical, but the process taken so far makes it very hard for either to transfer...

It's beautiful to finally see true competition at the qb position between two guys that have top level talent. Though one will win the starting it will definitely make them both better players and competitors.

This is a very enjoyable thread to read. The interesting thing is that it really does not matter who the starting QB will be this year. Everything that I saw this weekend points to us having a dominating defense and absolutely awesome running game. We will go with the guy that does not lose games and can dump the ball off to the RB in space most of the time. Sounds like a championship formula to me.

I agree. But I do not necessarily think it is a bad thing for either of them. I actually think the best case for Sims is for A.J. to tear it up the next couple of years and leave after his junior year for the draft.

I like Sims quick release, calm composure, and ability to stay in the pocket and make a throw. AJ has a little better touch on the ball but tends to want to run when the pocket is collapsing. Overall I think seems is a more complete QB.

Not that it will happen, but AJ could leave after this year, it is his third, right?

Someone has already mentioned it but what got me "jittery" about AJ was the striking resemblence to JPW and the back peddling when pressured. It just brought back bad memories of the Miss St game and many others when JPW's first decision was to begin back peddling when pressure would come. Sims didn't do that. He either got out of the pocket and ran or stepped up in the pocket and threw the ball.

Someone mentioned it somewhere already, but I think the "touch rule" had a lot to do with that. I think AJ danced around because he knew that even a fingertip would be counted as a sack. I don't remember him doing that in live game time last year. In fact, I remember him looking very comfortable in the pocket.

I think both QB's scrambled around more at A Day than they would in a live game situation. There again, it's easy to want to scramble when you're fighting for a starting job, knowing you need to make plays, and knowing that the slightest touch could end the play.

At the very least, it's unfair to AJ to draw comparisons to JPW and his happy feet/falling backwards throws. Both AJ and Phillip are miles beyond where JPW was at the same point in his career...
