  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

Not sure how the coaching change from CNS to CKD (first time to type that and I will have to get used to it) will hit the QB room.

The article makes ALOT of assumptions suggesting Jalen Milroe will be the starter and it even talks about his arm strength to throw "into tight windows" so I take all of this with a grain of salt.

Possibly the thing that stood out the most is that when CD got to Indiana, he immediately benched the entrenched older QB for a younger QB named Penix.

JMO, CKD seems to like a QB that can throw accurately on roll outs. Penix did that a lot. We certainly have some young guys that have the ability to do this.

Last year Washington targeted TEs nearly 70 times, over 800 yards, and 8 TDs.
Love it! And not just TE’s.
QB- 5000 yards
WR1- 1600 yards
WR2- 1200 yards
RB1- 1200 yards
And the Oline was named best in the country

If there are any players on offense that are looking to transfer after this hire I’m actually okay with it, because it tells me they’re not serious about football.

What gets me geeked is how quick his offense "takes" at new stops and is explosive from the get go.
Why I'm not overly concerned if we lose Bond or even Williams. I hope they will be at Bama, but if not, #s like that are like a burger billboard ad for a hungry driver!

So this thread had been put on pause for a while while we bemoaned the portals losses, but it's time to get it back on track.

Since the last post, we've lost JS and added Austin Mack to the QB room.

For fans of JM (and we all are!) I think there may be some positive news.

Yesterday I was talking to a Bama buddy who said what he's learned about Grubb's approach for his QB is to not "overload" them with too much. He said the system is basically a 2 read system, which may explain why Penix could get the ball out so fast.

Of course, there still needs to be presnap and post snap reads, but it will differ from what CNS called "the Bama offense," which was a pro-style offense that often had 4 progressions for passing plays.

I say this may be good news for JM because it may be similar to what CTR eventually adjusted the offense toward in the latter half of the season with his "flood route" concept.

So all the QBs will have less info to process compared to last year's offense, but they will be expected to be able to process what info there is quickly and to get the ball out very quickly.

So for all of last year's QBs, sounds like it may be an easier transition to Grubb's playbook than what it may seem to the naked eye. Of course, it still leaves Mack ahead of the curve on already knowing it.

But we should have 4 guys battling it out come the spring!

Milroe passing yards per game before the change: 231
Milroe passing yards per game after the change, excluding the SEC Champ and playoff game: 227 - excluded as the level of competition makes that possibly and unfair comparison.

Milroe passing yards per game in post season: 154

Not exactly an improvement and you can see the trendline is headed down...

anyway - I agree, from what I have seen the reads/looks are pretty different. It is closer to what CTR tried with the flood concept. It's not really that there are fewer reads, it's that the reads are more concentrated to an area of the field so the progressions are closer together, versus the progressions possibly spanning sides of the field in the pro-style. It's not as simple and the flood as that was often supposed to be just a single read, or maybe two.

so net, not sure it helps JM that much. CTR tried to simplify it way, way more and JM still had trouble making that read and by the time he'd tried to move to the second read it was usually to late, then we'd be off script just trying to make something positive happen. He's going to have to speed way, way, way up to be able to run this the way it's designed.

Well, I like our QB room this year. Gonna be fun to watch as things progress. Coach KD, Grubb and all the offensive coaches have to be excited about getting this attack in gear for 2024. If we can get the O line working right as well as the best QB to make the reads then the sky is the limit for all the playmakers we have as targets on the offense...wide receivers, running backs and tight ends.

Idk how you even handicap our QB competition.

Milroe - incumbent starter, tons of physical talent, learning a new offense

Simpson - I think he's now the highest ranked recruit at QB we have on the roster, learning a new offense

Lonergan - a ton of hype with a bunch of insiders calling him our best QB but we have seen him play even less than Simpson, learning a new offense

Mack - giant, very few people seem to have a great read on him, staff clearly likes him, has a year in the offense.

I legitimately have no idea who will be the starter by Wisconsin. Heck I don't even know who the least likely to be the starter is. Maybe Mack because of his age?

one other known variable for at least the three who were on the roster last year:

Speed of release (from clap to throw):

Simpson - quickest by far
Lonergan - #2.
Sayin (gone)
Holstein (gone) these three were all very close
Milroe - slowest by far.

No idea where Mack will rank.
