all the oregon hype

Was he really sorry though? For scoring while up 28?
You should have seen how angry he was on the sidelines, having no clue as to whether the cameras were on him, when Eddie Lacy busted off a 40+ yard TD late in the game against MSU in the 2011 Cotton Bowl.

I mean, should Mariota just let the other team sack him so it makes them feel better? I subscribe to the line of thought that if (you're the other team) you don't like the score, do something about it.
When you clearly outclass the other team, running up the score is a cheap thing to do.

If you're blowing the other team out, does your QB really need the practice or are you worried that your soft schedule requires embarrassing other teams in order for you to be taken seriously?

I subscribe to the line of thought that if (you're the other team) you don't like the score, do something about it. Mariota continued to play and to throw TD's because he needs the practice, if he's pulled after the 1st quarter of every game and doesn't fully utilize his skills during actual game play, he won't be prepared for the bigger games. If Colorado and UT felt so bad about it, they should have done something about it.

Meanwhile, we'll pull our starting QB whenever we feel the game is decided - even halfway through the second quarter, as we did a couple weeks ago.

That mindset hasn't seemed to hinder the development of our starting QB, AJ McCarron, who led the nation in passer rating last season. :)

It's a difficult line to walk. On the one hand you don't want to run up the score, on the other hand you want your players to get valuable in game experience. In the WA game it was the first time Mariota played in the 4th quarter. He needs to start playing late into the games, even if it means having to unintentionally continue to score. He can't get used to playing only the first half of games, which he's been doing. OR does slow the game down significantly when we're comfortably ahead. I don't know how to say this and not appear to be boasting, but the scores could be significantly higher than they ended up being if the team didn't take their foot off the gas pedal. Ohio St. is more the kind of a team that does that kind of thing, run things up on purpose.

I think Oregon is very good. I think Bama is very good. Against Kentucky, Bama seemed to take it to another level so far as being dominant, really for the first time this year. I think Oregon could beat Bama this year. I think Bama can beat Oregon. I hope they play. It will be one of the most watched games ever. This Bama team has not convinced me they are as good as they were last year or 2011. But they are very good. And they might end up being great. It is hard to say what Oregon could do in the SEC this year. I think their best shot is to play the SEC champion in a one and done deal. If they played a full SEC schedule I think they would be had. Having said that, Oregon looked very good to me. I would rather play anybody in the SEC this year. Give them their due. They have the look of a great team; both offensively and defensively.

LOL, as if we couldn't say the same thing? It's funny, it's almost as if you believe your offense is significantly better than Bama's, despite the numbers that have been displayed in this very thread.

The diff is our second and third string players have significant playing time by season's end...

I really enjoyed your game against ATM. Your offense was on fire, very productive and sound. I don't necessarily think our offense is better, just different. Our second and third stringers get significant playing time too. Your QB is a senior right? He's got more experience than ours, he's a sophomore. Some fans just worry about him always being pulled so early in the games because of the scores. At least WA allowed us to keep him in the game well into the 4th.

In all fairness CA, if he didn't think his offense was awesome, he wouldn't be much of an Oregon fan :biggrin2: All I can say is that the truth is coming down the tracks and that Crimson light Oregon sees is not sunrise at the end of the tunnel.

Yes, our QB is a senior and has more experience than a sophomore. However, Saban's policy of pulling starters when the game is out of hand doesn't really change based upon the starter's class. We'll pull true freshman starters out of the game in the third quarter.

The "our QB needs late game experience" excuse is just that - an excuse. Playing late in the game when the game isn't in jeopardy is nothing like playing in the 4th quarter with the game actually on the line. The only way to gain experience that helps in those situations is to actually play in those situations.

If you'll notice, we also significantly change our play-calling in those situations. We don't keep running "our offense" just for the sake of running it - even with our backups in - when the game is out of hand.

The way Oregon approaches game management in these situations is simply different than the way we approach them. We, as Bama fans, view that type of approach - regardless of the reason it is adopted - as low class, for lack of a better term. Perhaps we're right. Perhaps we're too "old fashioned", or whatever. :)

I'm not necessarily saying that Oregon is wrong for doing things the way they do them, just letting you know where we're coming from.

Some fans would also go berserk if he tore an ACL in a 50-16 game.

We change our play calling too and slow the game down quite a bit. Perhaps Mariota is left in the game longer than he needs to be sometimes. Most fans of opposing teams would tell you that they don't feel as if we run up the scores on purpose. We try to keep it classy.

I dont watch oregon when they are up 20-40 points and the games is won no sense in me watching it at that point so I can't say 100% what they do. I think what everyone here is saying that oregon runs their tempo(IDk like I said just how I am interrupting what they are trying to say)when the game is won still use hunh and rushing the clock. I know for a fact tho that Alabama takes it starters out and pretty much closes the play book we are going to run the ball to run the clock out and wont snap the ball until it is less then 5 sec on the play clock.
Our 3rd string running back scored against Michigan state in the capital one bowl and u could see nick saban angry on the side line he couldn't be mad at lacy b/c he was just running the play but u could see the displeasure on his face he does not like to humiliate the other team. "act like u have been their before" would u like it if your beloved team was down 40 and the other team is rushing to see how many points they can put up before its over

In fairness, we do tend to view things as "running up the score" that fans of a lot of other teams don't view as such.

We tend to have significantly higher, or perhaps stricter, standards than fans of most other teams. And we're proud of that fact. :)

I think the key thing in Oregon's tendency to put on some window dressing style points is two-fold:

1. They're a tempo team and getting their young guys out there still playing like the starters is good for their total roster development. They slow it down but they do keep a pace to it that creates a similar circumstance for their bottom 40 roster guys who are the future of their program.

2. They still have a perception deficit to SEC teams and the staff probably realize they need to win big as much as possible for media types who see nothing but box scores.

Good observations. I can agree with this.

I've heard this comment often. Oregon just runs its game. If the opponent doesn't bring the heat and step up to try to stop it, then it's the fault of the opponent if the scores become somewhat outlandish. If OR altered their game plan in order to make other teams not look bad, how would they play against quality opponents at the end of the season, not having played their style of football? I can tell you've watched very few of our games. If you had, you'd see that Mariota is usually pulled in the early 3rd quarter, the second and third string guys are out there playing, the pace of play is slowed down significantly. The majority of the points are put on in the first half.

Sigh, I have watched plenty of Oregon games. The point is simply Alabama does not try to score 70 on anyone. Alabama does everything in its power to not embarrass out classed opponents. It is not when you pull your starters its the plays a team calls etc... You don't have to hang 60 plus on Nicholls State to prove your manhood.

If anyone wants to see the "classy" Oregon watch the video below at 1:38, 1:50, and 1:58 mark. In the fourth quarter no problem throwing it down field, running up tempo, and going for it on fourth hehe.
DRIVE TOTALS: OREGON drive: 8 plays 75 yards, 02:11 OREGON TD
DRIVE TOTALS: OREGON drive: 5 plays 61 yards, 01:33 OREGON TD
DRIVE TOTALS: OREGON drive: 7 plays 76 yards, 01:58 OREGON TD

Going for it on 4th is just a normal Oregon play call. It was very difficult to not score 70 on this opponent. Maybe we should have put 6 guys on the field and benched the rest? As far as teams like UT go, they have no excuses to make about the drubbing they took. They have big guys, a storied program (though not currently good) and are among the top ranked teams as far as recruiting goes. Even with them we tried not to make them look too bad by calling off the dogs when the win was sealed. They will tell you themselves, 100 points on the board would not have been unrealistic.

It's really a culture difference. We aren't going to reach agreement on this or even have meaningful further discussion. It's degenerated into ignorant sparring...
