Andre Smith NFL Draft

The top OT on the board was a two man race in all reality: Jason and Andre Smith. I understand what there is to like about Jason, the way the 3-4 is proliferating in the NFL...a leaner, more athletic LT might be a good fit for a team wanting to pass a bit. The Bengals want to get physical, I believe, and Andre was the obvious pick for OT if you desire to be big and physical.

The "Andre freefall" was more ESPN BS filler between the end of the Super Bowl and the Draft. They actually started to backtrack right before the draft, saying that he wouldn't fall out of the top 10 anymore.

So how long was the streak for no 1st rounders? It's been some dark times the last few years.

Should be pretty safe for another 1st rounder next year with Cody and possibly Rolando. Then Julio the year after being a pretty sure bet. Much better streak to have than the alternative.

The Raiders just took Darrius Heyward-Bey with the 7th pick.

Crabtree was still available also Percy Harvin and Dez Bryant.

Al Davis has lost his mind.

Not that I'm justifying the pick (because I'm not, I believe it was a pretty big reach) but the reason Heyward-Bay was chosen that highly was because of speed. Hands down the fastest player in the draft (ran a sub 4.3 forty at the combine) and Al Davis loves speed.

Also, the other guy you were thinking of was Jeremy Maclin of Missouri, not Dez Bryant of Okie State. Bryant is still in school.

No offense to any Bama fans on this site that happens to be Bengals, but I thought going to Cincinnati was the worst possible place he could go. Dre has maturity issues (and I know he's a good young man, but maturity issues are still valid) and going to a place that has a bunch of maturity headcases is not the best thing for Smith.

I am very happy for Dre getting picked sixth, but there was two places I did not want to see him go to and that is Oakland and Cincinnati. Marvin Lewis hasn't proven he can control his team, and I feel Andre would be better suited for a team that has a disciplinary type coach like Singletary.

Oh well, I wish Dre all the best in Cincinnati. Just stay away from trouble, big man.

Maclin is who i was talking about. Thanks. Had a long night last night lol.

Heyward-Bay is def. fast, and we all know how much Al Davis likes speed. i think any other team would have went with someone more proven though and that was a threat in more than one way.

Ridiculous that the Baylor tackle went first. We'll see as their careers develop...

Yeah we know that Smith was the best Tackle. I agree that the Bengals wasn't the best franchise that he could have gone to but I can think of a couple of others that are much worse, Detroit and Oakland. When you are taken in the top ten you are never going to go to a great team, unless someone trades way up to get you. He should do well there and it should take only a couple of years to demonstrate that he was not only the best OT in the draft, but possibly the best player overall. Time will tell.

I'd wished for a better franchise also...

I'm trying to convince myself that they can turn things around up there. My late grandfather was a huge fan of the Bengals. My earliest Super Bowl memory was that Bengals team coming within a John Taylor TD catch of beating the mighty Niners.

Trying to talk myself into how they can turn it around, I use the recent makeover of the image of the NBA's Portland "jail blazers" as an example. If they can reorganize in this short period of time, any organization can.

I really like Cincy's draft to this point getting:
Andre - scour the message boards for 5 seconds and you'll get a consensus on how talented he is and how much he has meant to the program over the last three years.
Rey Maualuga (LB USC) - All American (if I'm not mistaken) that fell to the second round. Was tabbed as a top 10 pick at the beginning of the year.
Michael Johnson (DE GaTech) - loaded with talent and can be a dominant DE in a 4-3/OLB in a 3-4, when he wants to apply himself. This is the guy with character issues I would worry about the most, not Andre.
Chase Coffman (TE Mizzou) - As I'm typing this, they select Coffman in the 3rd Round to provide Palmer with a Jason Whitten type receiving threat to spread the field for their talented wideouts.

All that being said - they still just may continue to be the Bengals, and as long as they have players like Chad Johnson/Chris Henry on their team, they will be tough to support as a unit. Hopefully Marvin can exert some control over the shennanigans up there and Andre and Rey can provide some leadership as they have for their successful college teams.

Best of luck Andre - thanks for three amazing years, helping solidify the process (even in the wake of the unfortunate Sugar Bowl events), and thanks for catching that TD pass vs. OK State.

Congrats to Andre, Glen, Antoine, and Rashad for getting drafted!!! I hope they all have long and successful NFL careers!!! :BigA:

I'm sorry but I just do not buy that argument for a second. You will have to give me a "for instance" other than a span of two bad decisions. Name the other times Andre's coaches have benched him or suspended him for bad behavior on or off the field. You can't. You have three years of model behavior and one bad month which we still do not have all the facts on. I would be willing to say the decision to walk out of the combine was his and only his bad decision other than hiring that pitiful excuse for an agent. Nothing else has pointed to him being any sort of a problem WHATSOEVER in high school or college. He has only proven that he his a great football player. That is why I was telling all the naysayers I knew that they were nuts and that he would go in the top 10. If he really was the immature headcase that he was portrayed as he would have never sniffed the top 10 and Coach Saban would not have been able to overcome that. He also would have had a history of problems while at Bama.

Congrats Andre and best of luck in the NFL.
