So instead of dealing with the objects used to commit these acts, you're saying that we only need to come up with a singular common set of values and ensure that Americans all follow them. I am interested in your plan, tell me more. The root of the problem is the people, not the inanimate object they are using. Examples abound around the world that in the absence of guns humans will take whatever means available to take a life. So why don't we retrain the brain behind all these thoughts? Somewhere along the way we've lost common values of respect and decency that transcend religion, politics, race, gender, and other differences in society. Unless we return those values to everyone in society we will continue to see stories like this.

Great point. See London and the large volume of knife attacks. The root of the problem is the people, not the inanimate object they are using. What about starting off with "Thou Shall not Kill"So instead of dealing with the objects used to commit these acts, you're saying that we only need to come up with a singular common set of values and ensure that Americans all follow them. I am interested in your plan, tell me more.
Ban knives. Ban baseball bats. Ban tire irons. Ban 2x4s. Ban shovels. The list of inanimate objects to ban grows every day.So instead of dealing with the objects used to commit these acts, you're saying that we only need to come up with a singular common set of values and ensure that Americans all follow them. Spitballing. I’d imagine he was bullied and he probably viewed it as a righteous act of revenge. Or it could just be sociopathy. Or both. Who knows?I'd really like to know what drove him to do this as much as anything. Is it the desensitization via video games? Something else?
Just so we’re clear, murder has been illegal for quite a while now. What about starting off with "Thou Shall not Kill"
That should just about do it.
Just one value. Simple.....
Third option -Spitballing. I’d imagine he was bullied and he probably viewed it as a righteous act of revenge. Or it could just be sociopathy. Or both. Who knows?
Video games are a stupid place to start, IMO. It’s like blaming Marilyn Manson for Columbine.
https://twitter.com/abc/status/997510613206089728Exactly what liberties did I say to take away? I'm talking about the same kind of things you're talking about although it also veers off into mental health and finding things we can fix rather than just arguing about stuff and letting nothing happen be the answer.I have not, nor will I ever, go on a shooting spree. The only person on this planet I can control is me. The only person I will ever attempt to control is me. Taking liberties from citizens is a slippery slope that once you start down there is no return. The monster you create will surely come for you at some point.
You are far from the only person today to say thoughts and prayers (On Tidefans and beyond). I know you think all of my posts revolve around you but you should be interested to find out that they do not. Some of my feelings on thoughts and prayers are pretty well mirrored by Anthony Jeselnik in his standup comedy special entitled Thoughts & Prayers. It's on Netflix, and the bit is on Youtube (but has language and can't be linked directly). It was me that said "thoughts and prayers" upstream.
I stand by my post and don't see anything wrong with it.
I never said this is all I have to say - nor did I say I had a solution.
It's more about wanting to pay some kind of respect - without getting all political. Lord knows there are plenty here who go in that direction without any help from me.
Please let me know what you would have me say, Matt. I would really like to know so I don't offend you as much in future incidents.
Thank you!
And I know that doesn't sum up everyone's reasons for doing it (and definitely not saying that's your reasons before you get insulted yet again). But it's pretty accurate for a lot of folks in a society that is so focused on ourselves rather than our fellow man.The people who see something horrible happen in the world and they run to the internet, and they run to their social media, their Facebook, their Twitter, whatever they got and they all write down the exact same thing:
“My thoughts and prayers.” “My thoughts and prayers with the people in Aurora.” “My thoughts and prayers with the families in Boston.”
Do you know what that’s worth? Nothing. Less than nothing.
You are not giving any of your time, your money, or even your compassion. All you are doing – all you are doing is saying, “Don’t forget about me today. Don’t forget about me – Lots of crazy distractions in the news right now, but don’t forget how sadz I am.”
Our problem with school shootings is pretty unique among developed countries. What makes us different?Ban knives. Ban baseball bats. Ban tire irons. Ban 2x4s. Ban shovels. The list of inanimate objects to ban grows every day.
This value: Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you:So instead of dealing with the objects used to commit these acts, you're saying that we only need to come up with a singular common set of values and ensure that Americans all follow them. Just saying “the Golden Rule” strikes me as a cop out. There will always be thieves, murderers etc. This value: Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you:
do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

Just so we're clear.....you don't hear that message very much these days.....:wink:Just so we’re clear, murder has been illegal for quite a while now.
I would fold the desire for infamy into sociopathy.
It’s been codified in pretty much every legal system and code of ethics that has ever existed.Just so we're clear.....you don't hear that message very much these days.....
Given the confines and target audience of his request its about the best you can do.Just saying “the Golden Rule” strikes me as a cop out. There will always be thieves, murderers etc.
Fair enough and a valid point. Thanks, Matt.....-snip-
