Rice's first bowl since 1960! And, BTW, CMA's offense was the main reason they were there. Also, they lost their starting QB early in the year and have not missed a beat with a limited back up. So, do your research TfromT before you make silly comments.:eek:

Don't forget they had a player death during fall practice also. I went to the Rice/UH game and let me tell you, that starting line-up for Rice - OFFENSIVELY - was magical. They had UH on the ropes, but the defense just couldn't stop UH. It was a great game. Rice was winning 27-14 at the half after being down 14-0 after Houston's first two possessions. Rice lost it like 31-30. They were up 30-14 midway through the 3rd quarter. The kids Rice gets just aren't big enough to hang and bag, they have to scheme. Rice is a "braniac" school. Houston was the bigger team, but Rice was the faster team. Much faster.

After watching that game, I know Applewhite is a great hire.

I think you're right. I hope we see the same type of spread offense Rice ran instead of a plain old pro-style. Either way, we know the offense will improve.
 
Does anyone have any articles on Rice's offense - or the Longhorn's offense if it is similar - about what formations he generally lines up in and what are some bread-n-butter plays of the system. I'm assuming - if it is like what I've seen from Texas - the zone read/draws/sweeps are the running staples with some under-center plays when they want to really pound it.

At the Rice game, there were a fair share of "option plays" ala the wishbone. There were also option reads. It was pretty much what you see at Texas.

And Rice was running the 'Bone under Hatfield the previous year, so the offense was tailored to that. I figure a "play action" spread option with JPW is the only way to go - if they go spread. If they go Pro-set, that's good for JPW also.

Don't you think it would be quite "odd" for Saban to get Applewhite and then run the pro set? I 'm with you, I believe we're about to see a "play action" spread option installed at Bama. It doesn't make much sense from a strategic and personnel standpoint to hire a guy like Applewhite and his philosophy and stick to a pro set offense. Thoughts?
 
I just saw a quote from our QB prospect, Marve, that our offense will resemble what LSU used in the Sugar Bowl. Lots of Shotgun, some i-form when needed.

Yeah, I figure you're correct, but if Applewhite is the "next coming" he may have really impressed Saban with his knowledge of how exploit defenses with most offenses. I'd bet we will see a pro-set with a smattering of "spread" in at least the first few games and slowly see the offense convert to what Applewhite was comfortable with full-time. This may explain the "co-coordinator" approach Saban is taking.

Speaking of "play-fake", why do some QBs take it so lightly? Freezing the LBs or getting them to bite is a must on almost any pass.

I'd be willing to bet there won't be many "half arsed" play fakes under Saban. Might happen once but probably not again....:biggrin2:
