You gotta love Auburn whining about "deception plays".

Lmao this is a team that won games for YEARS with ticky tack high school trick plays where they got away with sending linemen downfield on a pass, subbing in punters as wide receivers to draw a penalty, Bo Nix spiking the ball backwards and on and on.

It happens to them ONE TIME and they cry 😂😂😂😂😂😂

All true. And that was bush-league.

Still, this year they're trying to clean this stuff up. I read this was a point of emphasis this year with Refs and coaches. That play CANNOT be in your playbook. Venables should be suspended for the year. They won't do that, of course, but he needs to be suspended for a game. Will they even do that?

I have no love lost for Aub or Freeze and I don't mind Karma catching up to them, but I don't want to see ANY MORE of this junk. It's poor sportsmanship. I don't want to watch it and I don't want it being taught to youth as if it's "OK".

Well, if they're serious about getting rid of it, then they need to allow the replay booth to call it, similarly to how they can call targeting even if the officials don't. It was plain as day on camera.

Not a fan of shenanigan offense, but I did love the irony of this happening to Auburn, given their history of nonsense offense.

The typical Auburn thing is to whine about this play while giving up ten sacks and fourteen tackles for loss.

The only offense they had in this game was to throw it towards Coleman and hope for pass interference.

I can't believe I'm even going to say this.....but Auburn should have won that game.

That fumble return that was called an incompletion.....I thought that was a catch and a fumble for sure.

And then that OU TD with the guy looking like he was running off the field.....that's a 14 point swing.

That crew though....at least the SEC called them out for missing that call on OU's TD.

The only way to get this type of bush league stuff out of the game is to administer immediate consequences to the HC and team after it happens. If what Freeze said postgame was right, and the coaches were told to get this stuff out of the playbooks and it would be a point of emphasis by the refs. Then Venebles and the Sooners should get a hefty fine and Venebles suspended for the next game.

Look, I didn't see the game, but a simple review of the play-by-play shows this is still nothing but whining.

The play in question occurred in the SECOND QUARTER. You cannot ASSUME that just because that play is (maybe) illegal that Oklahoma goes that drive without points. You can't assume they do score, either, but you can't assume they don't get something, either.

Furthermore, Auburn was leading in the FOURTH QUARTER, 17-16, with seven minutes left to play and gave up a 75-yard drive in six plays to Oklahoma. AND THAT is why they lost the game, not some mystical, magical "the refs screwed us" nonsense. "The refs screwed us" only became an excuse AFTER they lost the game. Auburn got the ball back with 4:54 left and returned the kick to midfield. They got called for a block in the back that nobody is disputing - and that means AUBURN screwed Auburn, not the damned refs.

This is the "Bill Buckner" argument all over again, where the guy who made the error gets blamed for the team losing, ignoring every other fact in existence (like the fact the game was tied and like the fact the Red Sox led Game Seven, 3-0, early).

And btw - I'm gonna be interested in seeing if there's more fallout on the subject simply because there's a whisper out there right now that the refs were tipped off to the play and you can actually see the guy lines up RIGHT IN FRONT of one of the officials.

Auburn has pulled this crap so long, there's a perverted sense of justice that it finally caught them of all teams.

Was OU football's touchdown against Auburn illegal? What rulebook says
ESPN sideline reporter Molly McGrath asked Jeff Heaser, a referee for Saturday's game, about the play.

"All I can say about that is we confirmed there were 11 people on the field, and (Sategna) technically never left the field of play," McGrath relayed Heaser's response. "That’s why it wasn’t called.”

But the issue was not whether Sategna left the field, which Austin explained in his rebuttal.

“I don’t disagree with anything Jeff said," Austin replied. "Strictly by the rule, (Sategna) did meet the requirements. He was inside the numbers when the ball was made ready for play. But again, you can’t go off, pretend you’re leaving and stay on.”
This makes it worse; the on-field refs seem like they didn't even understand the rule. I don't mind that Auburn lost, and I don't think this 1 play cost them the game, but refs not even understanding the rule feels worse than OU having it in their playbook.

All teams have plays that "skirt" some rules in the book. Instead of instructing teams during the summer to remove these types of plays, how about you make sure your refs know how to call them correctly. Flagging them every time is the quickest way to get them out of the game.

This article points out how refs have been missing this call for a long time: The trick play so tricky it tricks refs - by Rodger Sherman

Seems to me this is a case where replay should be allowed to "throw a flag" from the booth. I don't think replay should be able to call all penalties, but I do think a handful should be allowed to be called from the booth. This kind of trick play, substitution violations, false starts/offsides, and clearly missed facemask penalties should be callable from the booth, just like targeting.

Thank you. Arnold holding the ball for 500 years with that poor o-line will cause them to lose several more games, blown ref calls or not.

If Matt Austin said one thing, you always go with the opposite. The man is a complete moron when it comes to football rules. Every time he calls one of our games and says what's going to happen with the review, the EXACT OPPOSITE happens about 90% of the time.

This whole idea "you can't use deception".....ha ha ha......so play action passes can't be called, right? Flea flickers, ends around, reverses, all have to go, right? Auburn can't line up and then race up and do an onsides kick to get the ball back, right?

See where this goes?

And you know what?

They'll find a way to do the dumbest thing possible.

I have to disagree on the fumble. OK player butt hit the ground before the ball came out. speaking of a 14 point swing, Oklahoma was driving the ball and was at auburn's 30 when the RB fumble the ball. Oklahoma was up 10-3 at that point, a TD would have possibly put the game out of reach and deflated their spirits. instead, the barn score a td on that ensuing drive to tie the game.

Ball was already coming loose before he hit.
