We will not allow these folks to engage in historical revisionism. So just for the record, these are news stories from January 3, 1984, and for some reason Pat Dye is.....whining about a national championship he isn't going to win instead of celebrating one his school now tells me he DID win.

Dye went on to say "has anyone seen my pants?"

"Auburn’s official national titles will now be: 1910 (new), 1913, 1914 (new), 1957, 1958 (new), 1983, 1993, 2004 (new) and 2010."

1910: Maxwell Ratings (Loren Maxwell), College Football Rankings (Kyle Matschke)
1913: Billingsley MOV (Margin of Victory) and NCAA Football Record Book
1914: James Howell’s Power Ratings System
1957: AP and NCAA Football Record Book
1958: Montgomery Full Season Championship (David Montgomery)
1983: Billingsley, FACT, Football Research, Sagarin, NY Times and NCAA Football Record Book
1993: National Championship Foundation and NCAA Football Record Book
2004: Several, including Darryl Perry and GBE College Football Ratings
2010: AP, BCS and NCAA Football Record Book

They probably have a legitimate gripe about 1983. By today's standards they were for sure robbed.

2004 maybe on the technicality that now there is no official NC that year but LOL at the 'Several' designation....hahahah. Eufaula Times or whatever that fishwrapper was called.

1993 they were on probation so forget about it...lol They were in 1957 as well.

The rest were so long ago so meh, I dunno?

But this is hilarious because in Middle School and High School I clearly remember AU fans passionately arguing against many of Bama's claimed NCs as bogus and laughable.

I'm sure wherever they are today they of course have no issue with this update.
So my guess is they are going to have actual trophies fabricated as well...? 🤔

The now defunct College Football Data Warehouse website had a great write up on title selectors from 1869 to the current year with listings of putative title winners. They had a strict title selection where they boiled it down to as few as possible and then one listing of every selector.

For the strict list, we'd lose 1941 of course. But on the total list we had like 37 years with a natty of some type. And I'm pretty sure that didn't count 2020 and maybe 2017.

So... we got 38 lil bro dudes!
So using the "awbern" standard we now have 38 National Championships? ;)

Albeit, we did this in the 80's, but timing is EVERYTHING.

*We did it in a time when poll services were the only means of claiming/winning a NC, and there were typically at least 2 (at minimum) recognized almost every year.

*We did it 10 years or so before any legitimate playoff...which the SEC initiated by dividing into two divisions and having a SECCG starting in 1992, which was followed by the BCSNCG and the winner being the "undisputed" NC. It was sweet irony that we played an extra game in 1992 in the SECCG and then got the chance to face highly favored Miami and then suffocated them for an indisputable NC EVEN THEN 7 years before the BCSNC was even established!

**Auburn did it after 15 years of desert wandering since their ONLY undisputed NC (in 2010...although they cheated to get the 1 player that made it happen). But make no mistake the REAL REASON they did this is because they've just watched Bama reel off the greatest run in college football history...at one time winning 6 of 12 NCs, which were undisputed and solely claimed by everyone! It's their hatred of Bama and desire to be more like Big Brother that led them to this silly, embarrassing attempt to look more relevant.

Also, the most barner thing ever??? 3 of these newly claimed NCs were years they were "on probation???" This is Soooooooo typically "the barner way!"

But at no time did we ever:
a) insist national championships didn't exist because there was no playoff
b) whine about losing national championships that to hear it told now were not actually lost.
c) create web pages dedicated to degrading Auburn's national championships and explaining how "if this was today, this wouldn't count"

It is MY opinion we never should have gone here in the first place. It was all about a male measuring contest with Notre Dame, and Notre Dame's ascendancy owes a lot to the invention of radio and their proximity to Chicago when it was the second largest city in the USA. Throw in the Ronald Reagan movie and the legendary tales, and we were never going to top that particular aspect.

And the fact we recognize 1941 has always been an embarrassment. It would be like Notre Dame claiming one because Colley (IIRC) ranked them #1 even after we mauled them.

But this is who they are AND who they've been.

Moving the Iron Bowl to Auburn had NOTHING to do with "we're gonna show those Bama snobs" and EVERYTHING to do with money. But they couldn't come out and say, "You see, what we really want here is money," so they played the old "how dare Alabama tell us where we have to play" and roused up the food stamp recipients and convicted felons in Lee and Chambers County and boom.

National championships didn't exist until they did in Auburn's mind. This is like saying, "Since I was not aware of mass shootings in the 1970s, they never happened," when they in fact DID happen quite often.

This is not a good look for our rivals down on the plains.

I wonder if Tuberville will ask for his bonus for winning a NC?
