Auburn to ditch the spread offense.

I know of some who were hand-wringing over the barn hiring "The Guru" and implementing the spread attack. However, I was never sold on them being effective in that system until they had the players to run it.

Look at M$U. They've been trying for years to run the West Coast Offense (should be known as the Gulf Coast Offense), but, as Coach Bryant said, "you can't make chicken salad without the chicken".

It was ridiculous to think they could run an effective spread offense after one spring. It takes at least two recruiting clases to bring in the players, even when you farm the JUCO.

They certainly are in a precarious situation. Ditching an offense that was doomed from the start while trying to go back to something they haven't practiced since a year ago.

Way to go, barners..

"We're two minutes away from being 5-0 and probably ranked No. 2," Tuberville said.

Now that is an absolutely hilarious Tubby quote. I hate to see them abandon the spread eagle offense. I really liked the direction it was going. ;)

I'm not surprised, but it makes no sense for Ear$ to ditch it now in mid-season...he hired a "so-called high school spread guru" and now has a full class of '09 recruits that were supposedly recruited especially for that offense. Win or lose with it, would it not pay off to have your existing players, ie. your Oline and your qb, players like Fannin and Dunn to have experience in this offense now as it would only make your team better next year when those new players are merged in?
This was the exact scenario I and a few others on this board was saying was going to be a big possibility for the barn this season. IMO, if you're going to be committed to a full spread offense and you just hired a so-called guru for that specific purpose, then the smart thing to do is play for the future and take your lumps this year. Get the best players out there, and run the offense the way its supposed to be run win or lose.
Based on the conflicting comments coming from their staff, I'm assuming Ear$ has stepped in a cow patty with this whole thing and is starting to realize it and is now trying to put a patch on it.
Frankly, I'm still skeptical it will work in the SEC long term as far as producing championship caliber teams. The exception so far is UF but even they have a superstar qb who is built like a fullback to help run it and he is taking a beating. Also, as we see now, even they are vulnerable. JMO.

The Auburn version of the spread is

AU-ful

Speaking of....
At an online screen printing place I designed a t-shirt with the mean Elephant on the front captioned with "It's Rollin' Baby!"

On the back is the Auburn logo followed by AU-ful. If it didn't have a 12 item minimum order I'd have to grab the dang thing. It looks great.

I wish he would keep it but i give tubs credit for pulling the plug on the flag football offense thats a joke in the SEC. Watching six players on the sidelines flapping their arms like wounded ducks, the QB trying to figure out which one has the play call and the the OL standing up every play looking at the sidelines like lost prairie dogs is hilarious! But thats what you get when you buy a used Trojan.

Back when Tubs hired Franklin, people went all a-gaga about how Auburn was going to throw the ball all over the place. I said then that if anyone thinks Tubs is going to let a new OC come in and run a high risk gunslinging offense, they haven't been watching Auburn play football the last 10 years.

Todd said that we was shocked when they benched him for Burns in the second half against UT. When asked why he did that, Franklin said that's what Tubs told him to do. Tubs then flatly denied that.

That ain't one happy, harmonious tabernacky choir over there. I think there are some other issues under the surface that we don't hear all the stories on.

AU is in a very difficult spot. They are losing the recruiting battles to Alabama already. If they continue running the spread, they will likely lose several conference games and recruiting will suffer even more. If they ditch this offense and go back to power-I football, they may win more this season but they send mixed signals to the commitments they already have and further damage recruiting anyway. Looks like they might be screwed. Man, I feel bad for them..

And we're discussing Auburn why????

To be frank, I like the ambivalence on wingnut's part and trudging-through-the-mud-type offense they've mounted thus far. It's been enough to keep my barner husband pretty quiet this season....first time in YEARS!!:)

I love this:

Dude, ever heard of cafepress?

I don't feel bad for them. Let them experience some of the turmoil our program felt between Stallings and Saban. Changing your offense because you were losing the recruiting battle in state was a brilliant move. ;)

I agree with you Savannah. Why are we discussing Auburn? Anyway, I'm probably in the minority here, but i want Auburn to have a good season or two so when we beat them they will be higher ranked and they can't have any excuses, plus I want to beat TT several times before he leaves.

I am older than some of you and I remember the Iron Bowl being the game the whole country watches because both teams were in the top 10. Those were the days.

I agree, Tubs is making a major mess.

Arkansas is getting killed this year, but they are playing a lot of young guys and their coach has a plan and is sticking with it. They don't have the personnel right now, but he's building a program and in a couple of years, I expect they'll be pretty good at it.

Tubs will win more games going back to what they were doing last year, probably beginning Saturday. They have relatively easy games the next 6 weeks, with the hardest game being OM and if they get by the Rebs, they'll all be talking about what a genius he is, 6-game winning streak, blah, blah, blah. It's not that hard to run just a power I, especially if you have better athletes than the other team (which should be true till the UGA game) and most of your players have run it before. He may figure that they can relearn it on the job against the likes of Arkansas, West Va. and UTMartin while the defense pitches shutouts.

But the recruiting....

Yep, the barn is in a tight spot for all the reasons previously mentioned. I personally do not like the spread in the SEC. Like Cat said, the only reason UF's kind of works is because of Superman. Between the 20s it's ok, but every team is going to have to be able to play some power football at times to win in the SEC. The field gets really compressed once you get in the red zone. How are you going to punch one in when your 250 lb OL is trying to push around a 330 DT? The barn has basically recruited a bunch of Turbo Midgets. So how do you transition? Either way your personel is not going to fit your system for at least two years - which I think is the minimum amout of time it will take to change the type of player you recruit.

"Tommy Tuberville said he was pleased with the direction of Auburn's offense and planned to stick with it .....

We're 4-1 and played a very tough schedule to this point and we hadn't hardly seen anything from this offense ....."

Gawk! Pleased with the direction even though he hasn't hardly seen anything from it? Bahahahahahahahahahahaha

No wonder they need six people to send in the signals. They are all confused.

Aww....yes the would've, could've, should've statement by Tubbs.

Yes you could have Tub, but you know what, if pigs had wings they would fly too.

Everybody and their mama knew Tony Franklin plus lack of ideal talent for the system equals a bunch of 3-2 caliber games. Tubbs, AU is nowhere near being a Top 5 team in the conference, much less the nations.
