A few thoughts on some of the teams vying for the number one spot and how they will finish...
Ohio State, as I've mentioned before, should be locking up the top spot with Scout.com. They are number one right now by a very big margin, and they should still add two more five-star prospects: OT Marcus Hall, and QB Tahj Boyd.
USC was previously projected by me to finish up #1 on Rivals, but with them losing the commitment of five-star TE Morrell Presley to UCLA, I think that could cost them to the top spot. They should still finish up with about three more five-star prospects -- LB Manti Te'o, DE Devon Kennard, and DT Corey Adams -- and have an unreal class, but if LSU completely finishes up like they possibly can, they should probably edge USC by the narrowest of margins.
LSU has a chance to get past USC on Rivals, but they are going to have to run the table from here to do it. They will have to seal up Craig Loston, which shouldn't be a problem at all, but they will also have to lock up Rueben Randle, and they may very well have to get Andre Debose as well. That may very well be a tough thing to do, honestly. It's going to be very tough to get Debose away from Florida, especially if Harvin goes pro early, and Alabama is at least giving them a very tough run for Randle. That said, though, with Presley de-committing from USC, that at least leaves open the door for LSU to finish first in the Rivals ranking if they run the table from here.
Texas has a great class, no doubt about it, and on a per-player basis it is as good as you will find. However, they simply don't have near the size needed to legitimately contend for the #1 ranking, and that's just all she wrote.
Finally, the last team in the mix is Alabama, and believe it or not we do have a chance to wrap up the #1 spot on Rivals as well, now that Presley has de-committed from USC. Just like with LSU, we'll have to run the table to do it, but it's possible. If we can close by wrapping up with Dre Kirkpatrick, Kendall Kelly / Bobby Massie, Tana Patrick, and then stealing Randle away from LSU, then we will probably finish up with the #1 class in the country with Rivals. We should do all of the aforementioned, but getting Randle will be extremely difficult. However, that said, if we can somehow pull it off, we might sneak in the backdoor and get the #1 class again. With Presley leaving USC, and Alabama stealing a five-star away from LSU, that should open the door for Alabama to move past both of them.
