'Bama Commit OJ Howard Updates

... O.J. ... mentions Auburn was okay but he wasn't into what they were selling...

As we discussed on here last week, kids go into Auburn knowing exactly what they are selling. None of the kids going aboard that ship can claim lack of an informed consent.

Again, we're largely recruiting two different types of kids. The kids who want that really will have no interest in 'Bama, and those who want to be in a program like 'Bama will have very little interest in the type of program they are selling on the Plains.

"Howard said he also heard a number of appeals from other schools to be the first great prospect at another school rather than the latest in a long line of five-stars at Alabama. Howard was not impressed by that particular pitch.
"A lot of other schools talk to me about starting something new," Howard said. "To me, that would be making it about me. I don't want it to be about me, I want it to be about the team. I want to work hard and earn my spot. If it was easy to play at Alabama, everybody would do it. It's not easy to live up to the legacy they have built there."

WOW!!!! Can you possibly love this kid anymore??????????????

but but, what about all those Christian values and their strong faith in family???

LOL!!!

Article on O.J. from Al.com - mentions Auburn was okay but he wasn't into what they were selling. He also sounded very humble, glad we have him.

From the article...

"They talk a lot about their faith and how being a good Christian is really important to what they do.
:rolleyes::rolleyes:

At the end of the day, Tuscaloosa always felt like home from the first time I visited. I had a good time at Auburn but my heart was never in it."

That's coming from a kid that grew up an Auburn fan and was wearing a Cam jersey to school before committing to Bama.

Not to be cliche or cheesy, but this is the kind of quote I love to read from our players and recruits.

that's incredible. usually you hear that from former Bama players, not future ones. OJ has a chance to be one of the all-time greats.

Howard quote reminds me of the quote from one of Bryant's best players, "I didn't come to Alabama because I knew it would be easy. No, I came because I knew it would be hard."

That's what you need, kids with lots of talent and that attitude. Find 30-40 guys like that and you'll put one heck of a team on the field.

The Barn needs to change their name to Auburn Christian University or ACU. I am sure most universities coaches, players, administration are good Christian people and a have a lot of Christian values but the Barn makes this their mantra.

Physical quality, mental quality, character... everything of this kid reminds me of Julio. I cannot wait for our opener with VT...

That is easy to say, though not necessarily correct. Howard could very well transition to WR just as easily as he could TE or H-back at 'Bama. In fact, given the problems we have had getting receivers with size, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get a chance outside. At the least, you can bet we'll flex him out wide into the slot on occasion, even if he does stay in the TE / H-back role.

I agree, hes quite able to move to WR, especially with his speed. i still believe his natural positionto be at TE.
I think hes more dangerous as a TE; great blocking ability (which fits well into our run first offense), but with speed and great hands as a receiver. I just think we're not without talent at receiver position, already, they just need a little time to season.

A big man with OJ's speed and ability would be a nightmare at the TE position, and is a rarer commodity....JMO, of course.

I do think that the staff would move him around, which just makes it harder on a defense to game plan, and definitely want to get him the most opportunities to be effective.

IIRC, it was Tommy Wilcox that made that statement. I , too, thought about that famous statement when I read OJ's.

and sadly enough, there are some parents (or lack of) and kids that buy this junk.

Correct on Wilcox.

And to give the background, we recruited him in the late 1970's out of Louisiana. He was a wishbone quarterback in high school, and most people said he would never play at Alabama. He basically said to heck with it, I'm going to see what I'm made of, so he signed with us anyway.

Not long after he showed up, he was buried so far down the depth chart at QB that he was practically six feet under ground. We moved him to DB pretty quickly, and he took to it immediately. He was a big asset on defense, and ended up being chosen a couple of times as an All-American. It was his interception, in fact, that was the big play in the 1980 Sugar Bowl when we took out Arkansas to wrap up the national championship.

Howard was in Tuscaloosa for the Western Kentucky game. Not sure how many games he plans on attending, but it sounds like he is very going to be a very frequent visitor in T'town.

Hopefully he catches an Auburn game soon. Watching Kiehl Frazier try to throw the football is probably the best thing that could happen for 'Bama in terms of his recruitment. Frazier has an NFL caliber tight end as it is, and he's completing two passes a half against mighty Mississippi State? Good luck convincing Howard to sign up for at least two years of that.

He did not play in Autauga Academy's game last night. Coach said it was not injury or disciplinary issues.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk, so my post may not be what I typed thanks to auto correct. Also, I may need an emoticon but cannot use one in this post.

I believe what the coach said was that it was not a "serious injury." I think Howard was banged up a bit and they held him out.

Autauga has a big game coming up this weekend against Edgewood. Probably just playing it safe for that one.

Edgewood is #1, aren't they? AA is going from playing the #4 team last week to another big game this week. That'll keep your focus.

I remember an interview with him when he was a senior. When asked what he wanted to do he replies in a very heavy cajun acccent, "play hard for da bear".

Almost the exact quote I gave during my senior year, except I said, "party hard for da beer."
