Very interesting matchup. Some people have them preseason top 10. They return Harper, Davis and Spiller. How will our D look containing their running game? Is it good to face them early? Usually defenses are ahead of offenses for the 1st few games. They are replacing 3 starters on O-line.
I hope our D line can take advantage of new players on their O line and that we can make a few breaks. It would be great to open the season with a potential top 10 upset.

I'd love to see a dose of the Uno package for Scott.

This game could be huge for Bama if we can win it. Let's face it we haven't been in the habit of winning these kind of games in quite some time and it would be a real boost to our guys confidence to win it. Yes, playing them early is probably a good thing. We should be the underdog.

I think our d-line will dominate their o-line in this game. I think as we speak our o-line is actually better than their o-line and that is not a good thing. I think I was more afraid of McFadden and Jones than I will be of Davis and Spiller. They are both good backs but Tommy Bowden always finds a way to leave one of them with a few touches. Ill save my prediction for this game until we get the freshman in during the summer.

looks like both of our o-lines will be outclassed by the opposing d-lines. i see this game as ending 3-2. who knows what either team will look like that early in the yr but i dont see them being able to run on us after replacing 3 on the o-line. in their spring game their defense completely demolished their offense. this game will probably come down to the best punter and best field goal kicker. plus tommy is an idiot so we have that going for us. i still think of clemson as allbarn-north and despise them in every way. it almost grosses me out that our uniforms will be tarnished with that nasty hue of orange.

it seems interesting on paper but i am predicting this will be one of the most ugly games of the season. as in total stats for both teams being 8 1st downs, 50 yds rushing, 100 passing, 4 ints, 6 fumbles, 10 sacks and a safety.

If my memory serves me right, it has been a very, very long time since we've beaten a ranked, nonconference opponent in a regular season contest. The last time I recall it happening was all the way back in 1986 when we opened against Ohio State. So, yes, I agree that a win against Clemson would be HUGE.

Really? Their Dline better than our Oline? When do you think our Oline will be good? I couldn't disagree more. We have an all american lineman who will probably be the first lineman picked in next year's draft, one of the best centers in the country, and the rest are very quality players. Our Oline probably won't be any better over the next 4 years.

I hate the thought of possibly losing to a team wearing orange and purple or whatever combination of butt ugly colors they will be wearing. I think they must be trying to be the Oregon of the East with some of their uni choices.

i think we have a chance to win but i would be shocked. our defense should keep us in the game early but i just dont see our offense keeping them off the field. yes our offense should be the best its been in awhile but thats not saying much. at the end of the day, from what i can see, its still an underachieving offensive line with a shaky quarterback and no everydown running back. maybe the incoming freshman will change everything but right now clemsons defense is just too scary to say we got a good shot at pulling an upset.

Clemson really has two weak spots (at least assuming no one steps up in the fall): OL and LB. Outside of that, they have a pretty solid team. Their DL will be very good, especially with Bowers. I see our TEs as a clear advantage over their LBs. As an optimist, I think JPW will get enough time to get those 5-7 yard passes to our TEs and our RBs don't need to play spectacular, but I'd expect the Clemson LBs to miss a few tackles/ assignments b/c of their inexperience. I am more worried about our LBs missing assignments and allowing Spiller/ Davis to run over us. With that said, I think our team can definitely compete with Clemson and assuming we don't have any brain fart plays (like pass against MSU), we should win.

Offensively, Bama should be able to move the ball well as long as the run game is there, only thing I'm worried about is the OL/Play Calling keeping the Clemson pass rush off of JPW so he can stay as consistent as possible

Defensively, Bama should play the run pretty well, I'm just worried about the short screens/misdirections and what not with the young LBs

With that said, hopefully Arenas will give Bama good field position in case JPW loses his composure during the game, also hope Burton Scott can help out with JPW's consistency by taking some snaps under center

Should be a close game

I can't see ANY way that a freshman can learn TWO positions (WR and QB) in THREE WEEKS. Not that it would really help IMO - if we line BS up at QB everyone in the stadium is going to know we're going to run some sort of option play - that's all he could possibly learn in that time.

I am most concerned about two things for this game:

1. The right side of our O-Line - we have to see improvement there or have Tyler Love come to Tuscaloosa 100% ready to start or we're going to have problems. The A-day game showed our weakness there and all its going to take is one heavy blitz to get JPW rattled and we're all but done.

2. Their RB's around the corners - I was concerned about all running before the A-day game but our DL showed that they could handle the line quite well. But to fully extend to cut off the corners from their amazingly fast RB's our LB's are going to have to be able to read, predict and get to the corners. Our ILBs are good but the OLBs are going to either be undersized or under-experienced against a Clemson team that is neither.

I will be happy if we're in it but am not expecting a Win at all.

Cosign. I'm concerned. I hope my beloved Tide can make those concerns disappear in the 1Q.

I know nothing has been officially decided, but I seriously doubt that Scott is going to line up at QB. He may line up elsewhere on offense but QB, I don't think so, IMO. We have a bigger need on defense to begin with.

clemson will have the advantage in the offensive backfield. however, 3 new off linemen is a bit tough early in the season. they lost their big, fast most productive receiver from last year. harper is not very mobile, and a bit slow getting rid of the ball. the key is topping davis, and spiller. by the same token, offensively, we need someone to step up, on the offensive right side, and at running back. special teams will be big in this early game for both teams.

the gameplan will be simple. Stop their run and Bama should win this game. If we cant stop their run, we will more than likely lose the game. I hope Harris and Hightower are beasts cause we dont have what it takes right now to stop the run on the edges.

If the right side of the OL continues to not be able to block on passing situations and if we continue to not be able to run the ball we're going to get beat like a rented mule.

But if we can do those two things we'll beat Clemson and I think we'll beat them soundly.

lining up at QB doesn't necessarily mean he has to learn that position, he will be used similar to how Percy Harvin/Prothro/and other athletes of his caliber are used

situational snaps under center running options/reverses/etc.

just something to change the pace of the game in a situation where JPW or the run game might be struggling

and IMO it can be very effective, especially with a blocking back like Griffin and the TEs bama has, also with big WR like Jones/Alexander blocking on the outside

I doubt he will be used a lot like this early on or even later in the season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him take some snaps
