****Bama vs. CSU Postgame Thread****

  • A very merry Christmas to you and your family from all of us at TideFans! Be safe and be blessed!
A couple of observations.

1)We seem to be developing a frustrating habit of playing to the level of the competition which I am sure has frustrated Coach Saban.
2) Our O-line is underperforming. They are not the dominating O-line we are used to and I expected we would not be as good as last year, but we have to get better performance from them as a whole. I am having serious doubts about Cristobal's ability to coach them up.

Well, they were pretty much handcuffed. However, last year's OL wouldn't have cared. #71, in particular, was just not looking like last year. I hope that Steen's presence is not as important as it seemed to be Saturday, because he'll play on Sundays next season...

Earle, I don't want to jump on the "it's the OL coach" but would you happen to know if our new OL coach uses a different scheme or technique than the previous coach?

It appears we held some players out in this game that probably would have played had this been a more talented opponent, Still we have to play better than we have been. I hope this teams identity isn't to "play down to the opponent", but to "play to a standard". I have faith that Coach Saban will get it figured out at some point though he seems pretty frustrated right now.

I think the answer is "yes" on the techniques and "no" on the schemes. The OC normally determines the schemes (in all cases subject to CNS's input). Some of the OL have commented on the different techniques. It's important to remember that the OL coach is a former HC...

Are we to guess that Stoutland got a significant raise that we could/would not match to go coach OL for the Eagles?

So basically much of what we're seeing could possibly be due to the players getting used to a new technique?

Our coaching staff did nothing via play calling to change the flow of the game or to get us out of the offensive rut. Absolutely nothing. The only thing I can figure is it was by design. I know our coaching staff isn't stupid and have enough brains to make adjustments when something isn't working. So I'm only left with it was by design we kept doing what we were doing.

We have to hope that is the case. In all honesty, when someone like CSU goes man on man with our wr group (and they did that A LOT), we should be able to burn them everytime. We only tried a couple that I saw.

It looked intentional. Check downs, run plays, no pistol hardly, under center a bunch. Looked like working on our weaknesses and playing young guys.

Cristobal is very well respected as a coach. After three games, there's no need to start wondering if Stoutland would want to come back to Bama. MC uses a different technique than Stoutland, and the players have talked about liking how he played the position while Stoutland did not.

Is is possible the game plan was not a big one out of respect for Coach McElwain? I know there were some issues obviously, as McCarron was upset, etc..., but still can't help but wonder if it was to be a low key game for respect purposes. We were still the same team that played A and M with big plays and beat a team with an excellent QB. Just a thought...

Yes, I think part of it is...
This may be a dumb question Earle, I understand Coach Cristabol is new to our coaching staff, why would we change techniques from what has helped us win the last 2 NC's..It would seem like the new O-Line coach should learn & continue teaching what our players already know..Cause chances are in a couple years we may be replacing him if he takes another coaching job..With the turnover rate form Coach Saban's coaching staff, changing techniques after each position coach changes, will eventually start causing problems for our Players..If that makes any sense..LOL

I hear what you're saying, but adapting to new techniques is part of the drill for playing big boy football. You can't expect an incoming position coach to be able to teach someone else's technique effectively...

That's the thing... Coach is holding CMC just as accountable as the players for the results produced on the field. Its his job to get that stuff corrected. Despite his past resume if it doesnt he wont be there for long...

Re: ****Bama vs. CSU Game Thread Postgame Thread****

Look, this is my last word on this subject for now.

1) Some of you need to go back and review the past five years and note we've had some "concern games" where we were never in trouble of losing and were just growth periods of guys learning to play together.

2) Anybody referencing the Shula or DuBose years on this place needs to be banned permanently. Mike DuBose never once entered October without a loss and Shula (in four tries) only did it once. CNS - by contrast - has scheduled challenging early season games in September - and we have not lost since 2007 (and back then we lost by a TD to a MUCH better FSU team and in OT on the road to a UGA team that might have been the SEC's best that year). There is NO COMPARISON.

3) Some of you need to take note that beating a bunch of teams by 30-40 points is an aberration even for us. As Gene Stallings used to say, "I'd rather be 7-0 and not know what kind of team I've got than 3-3 and sure exactly what I've got."

If you'll look back over the past few years:
2009 - drilled an up and coming Arkansas team, 35-7
2010 - made a sensational comeback from a 20-7 deficit on the road in Fayetteville against a frenzied crowd and foe
2011 - crushed perhaps the third best team in the USA, Arky, 38-14 right after a lackluster outing against UNT
2012 - after a lackluster game against Ole Miss, we really got it going against Mizzou on the road with some lightning

Last year it took until game six to really get our chemistry going. If we drill Ole Miss (who I think is overrated but who is coming off a bye week), everyone will calm down. But you shouldn't be panicking anyway.

I'm done, and if you can't do anything to help then for Pete's sake don't hurt us.
