Baseball Strike Date Set

Having grown up in the south, I'm certainly no expert on labor unions. However, from my limited observasions, labor unions often end up destroying the industries with which they are affiliated.

IMHO, any system based upon extorsion is not a good one.

Labor unions came into being because of real issues like safety, work hours and a fair, living wage. However, once the truly noble issues were resolved, union organizers didn't want to give up the cushy job of taking a cut of worker's pay for representing them in labor negotiations.

As such, to justify their continued existance, they continue to extort more concessions from ownership in the form of additional pay and benefits. Eventually, these inflated compensation agreements begin to harm the company's ability to remain competitive with non-union competition and turn a profit.

Ultimately, the meager return on investment does not warrant the risk of doing business and the industry collapses.

Name a single industry using organized labor that does not operate continuously on the verge of collapse. Airlines? Auto industry? Trucking? Just add baseball to the list. RTR.

This is exactly the reason prostitution has lasted so long.

Let them go. Schedule more College Football games during that time. So long to the greed of MLB players. I have not been to a MLB game since the last strike. If they go on strike this time I will never watch a MLB game in my life time. I say lets watch more College Baseball instead. I really do not care what MLB does. Good Bye MLB. So long.

Ditto what everybody's said here. I blame both the players and the owners for letting this "game" get out of hand. Sure Alex Rodriguez makes more in one year than I will EVER make in my lifetime, but you know what? There's some idiot owner willing to pay him that! And then have the nerve to raise ticket prices making me (in essence) pay for his friggin salary!I say screw them all and if they do strike, this Saturday will be the last MLB game I will ever attend!

I am not taking up for the players, but I do not believe any of these owners are hurting.
Plus, Bud Selig and Co. did an illegal auction with the Boston Red Sox...he should be going to jail. How many times we have seen owners holding their host cities hostage until they get their new stadiums. If the owners where actually losing money they would sell. And if someone would give me a 45mil a year job I would take. Believe me, the owners do not want to share their profits with each other. Ask the NY George. It started with him and the Yankees when they gave Catfish Hunter a big signing deal. These owners will constantly back stab each other. They have been arguing with each other for the last ten years....Big City markets vs Small City Markets. It would be interesting when they go to the world wide draft next year. Maybe in some ways unions are bad but asked those poor souls who lost their 401K after working for Enron.

i'm with you bilbo.

of course now that i'm back in ATL and the braves are having an excellent year there will probably be no playoff or world series...figures.

I was coming to braves games when it wasn't cool and when it was me, my little league teammates and Chief Knock-a-homa as the only fans in the stadium! I've always wanted to be here where I could go to games whenever i wanted and now this stupid strike.

A couple of polls:
1) If you were on the Rangers with A-Rod and you went out and did your job every day just like he does, would you be resentful or would you appreciate the fact that he is more marketable than you?

2) If you were A-Rod, would you give up a few million back to the team in order for the Rangers to get a few more quality players?

3) If someone offers you $10 million / yr why in the world would you ever refuse it?
