Battered Quarterback Syndrome: A Discussion on Ty Simpson

From the OL coach's bio. We are currently ranked #82 with 25 sacks allowed.
That is very misleading, the key stat is not total sacks, it is sacks per attempt. Also, it should be conference related. Alabama is 5th is the SEC in sacks allowed per attempt. That is above average, the upper third of the league. Not only that, Alabama has played most of the better pass rushing teams: MO, UT, USCe, OU, AU. This is one of the better pass pro OLs in the SEC.

This OL is not great, but it is not the disaster that many on this board are making it out to be. Again, it is one of the better pass pro OLs in the SEC based on more relevant data.

i had lower back surgery in 2001. at the time, i was an avid mountain biker and whitewater kayaker and was severely limited in the last year or so prior to surgery. i was miserable

I've been inside for a month with a knee replacement. I'm going absolutely bonkers being so limited in what I can do. Absolutely miserable.

I strongly disagree with this statement. The OL is horribad. And they are the reason Ty has Battered Quarterback Syndrome.

I don't agree with your manipulation of the stats.

Our OL isn't quite a "disaster". But it is NOT up to Bama standards.
It’s not up to any standard.

We also have to consider the running backs may be making the situation worse by missing the holes that are there.

The line looked serviceable when healthy Jam made one cut and went, then he got injured.

Georgia hit Ty early, often & hard taking Ty literally out of the game..

Georgia to their credit obviously watched the Oklahoma game tape, because they did, exactly what Oklahoma did taking Ty out of the game early mentally..

Is it time for a QB change Im not sure, with our OLine's lack of execution & effort I'm not sure what too do in all honesty..

The same thing will happen with a different QB & literally making any QB taking a snap under center a "Lame Duck" behind our OLine..

Im just being brutally honest, unless there's a better running QB than Ty, then we go back to a more Jalen Milroe type running offense..

Im not sure what too do offensively behind an OLine that looks like they were coached by ""Bucket Step Bob" himself..

Flame away that's just my brutal assessment of Alabama's bad offense, too have -3yrds rushing, should be grounds for or offensive line coach automatic dismissal..JMO

I don't think the key metric is total sacks, but total pressure and total hits. There have been many instances this season where we've gotten the ball away just before taking a hit.

Never played a down of football, but Ty and its clear, is not the same Qb as early on. I might be wrong here, but why don't we try quick reads, screens, etc. I think the longer Ty holds the ball the greater chance for a pick or fumble. We have 2 weeks to figure this out and I hope this staff can figure it out,

Yeah, but isn’t that true for everyone? How come we didn’t make UGA crap the bed if that’s all there is to it?
We kinda did. 21 of uga's points came off VERY short fields. Blocked punt (not ty's fault), tipped ball pic (not entirely ty's fault) and turnover on downs on their own 12 (not entirely ty's fault). The defense played a pretty dang good game.

Ty either has a concussion or, or is so jacked up on pain meds he’s slower to react through the pain.
Agree, and it's in the eyes. He doesn't seem to know what the football does or what to do with it. This is now 3 years on with scattershot QB play, with a short break for 6 weeks in the first half of this season, I remember when this kid, for 6 short weeks, had high accuracy. He was finding guys open, or putting that ball through a key hole. He's still got it in there: see that last TD pass against Auburn.

But, as of right now, it's a brown, oddly shaped thing, and it burns his hands to touch it. His receivers hear the play call, and their brains go "run around and do things". The running backs room is empty, so no one there to hear a play call. The offensive line just hears "2nd clap, don't jump early".

The defense absolutely held their own against OU and UGA. Both games, Short fields given up aren't on them. And most of UGA's plays looked exactly like the ones we ran with perfection against them in late September.

It's all very confounding for a casual fan to comprehend. Some of us who know football at least a little bit, and know college football from decades of watching and paying close attention, know that this isn't an easy problem to solve. Calling for firing people isn't the answer. Execution is lacking, but why? Simple. We are the walking wounded out there. All those highly ranked teams, stacked together, all the teams with an off week before Alabama....It's built up. If that was the goal of the conference, to beat Alabama to a pulp, mission accomplished.

So if Kirby said he learned something from OU, then we better spend the next two weeks changing up our offensive tendencies and play calling.

It seems teams are baiting Ty into switching and then they switch, knowing what's coming.

We also are going to have to go more heavy on pass pro and start keeping a TE and RB in to block more...maybe even 2 TEs!

And, I think we didn't stick with the running game long enough against Georgia. The first couple of series D. Hill was making decent yardage. He had a few 4-5 yard runs early, but then when we got to 3rd and short, we couldn't convert. And then when we got behind, we panicked and basically abandoned any run attempts. When we gave up on the run, so early, Georgia was just pinning their ears back and sending everyone.

We have to run it better (which brings up OL blocking) and pass protect better and/or scheme better with more screen passes.

And whatever is ailing Ty, we've got to keep him from taking so many hits.

I think it's safe to say that if he's not significantly better against OU this time around than he was against AU and Georgia, we will have an early exit from the CFP.

The last time we played OU, they had two weeks to look at our tendencies and come up with the defense to stop us. Kirby used the same scheme OU did. We spend too much time at the line "making adjustments". I wonder what would happen if we would just go to the line and run the play before the defense has time to make a bunch of shifts.

The problem is however good they are at pass pro they are equally bad at run blocking, which renders the offense one demensional and subject to what UGA and Oklahoma did to our offense, which is bring enormous amounts of pressure that no matter how good the OL is at pass pro, they can't do it all game.

The bottom line is DeBoer HAS TO find a running game or we are dead in the water offensievely moving forward. The conference now has a full season of tape on Grubb and for the most part has figured him out. He's yet to show any ability to adjust so as of now, we're in a very bad spot going into next season, unless we find a real running game.

At this point, I don't care what his issues are or aren't. It is time to pull the plug and put someone else in that can give us a spark. I would rather go down swinging with some sort of downfield passing attack than sit back and watch what happened Saturday again in Norman in 2 weeks. We had single coverage multiple times on our receivers to the outside, throw them the freaking ball and let them make a play or draw PI like happened on the one TD drive we did have. I love Ty and that he has gotten his shot to lead us, but something regardless of what all that is/isn't has been off since the Mizzou game, and it has cost us a couple games and almost cost us a couple of others. I get the OL shortcomings and lack of running game, but a huge part of the loss Saturday was due to the inept QB play, and the lack of confidence and bad morale was picked up and felt by the entire team...
