BCS Rankings

Pretty much as expected. I really feel like if we win out everything else will take of itself. :BigA:

(I know, very profound..):)

Does anyone worry that if we have a flat game against an Arkansas ST and Penn St gets some style points that it would give some voters an excuse to move them into 2nd place in one or both polls? (harris and coaches that is). And would that be enough to affect the BCS ranking?

Penn State is off next weekend so I doubt it will really matter as long as we take care of business.
I think it's all in our hands from here on out. If Penn State was going to jump us without us losing it had to be this weekend. They don't have anymore impressive games to do it with. They'll need us to lose.

Projected BCS Bowls by these rankings:

National Championship Game: Texas vs. Alabama
Rose Bowl: USC (Pac 10 Champ) vs. Penn State (Big 10 Champ)
Orange: Florida State (ACC Champ) vs. Ohio State (At-Large)
Fiesta: Oklahoma (At-Large to replace Big 12 Champ Texas) vs. Utah (At-Large)
Sugar: Florida (At-Large to replace SEC Champ Alabama) vs. West Virginia (Projected Big East Champ)

Right now, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and Georgia would be on the outside looking in due to only two teams per conference being able to go to BCS games.

Any questions about whether Penn State has a chance to jump over Alabama should be answered by this week's BCS standings. Even after the impressive road win over Ohio State, PSU is still trailing the Tide in both polls and five of the six computers. And Alabama has a couple of highly-ranked opponents left on its schedule (assuming an SEC championship game), while Penn State has none.
Nittany Lions fans are understandably disturbed by this, having seen their team go undefeated five times under Joe Paterno and win a national title in only one of those seasons. But the message seems clear. Unless Alabama loses or the Texas-Texas Tech winner takes a loss later in the season, Penn State will be bound for the Rose Bowl instead of the BCS National Championship Game.

if we win our games we should be fine..

Actually Penn State's remaining schedule really works out pretty well for us considering:

Nov 1: We play Ark State and they're off so they don't have to opportunity to jump

Nov 8: We play LSU and they play Iowa -> the spotlight will clearly be on us this week and not penn state. If we take care of business here they shouldn't jump this week either

November 15: We play Mississippi State but they play Indiana who's just as bad as Mississippi State, now we have to take care of business and not let this be a close game, but they're game is no more impressive than ours this week

November 22: We're off and they play Michigan State --> this is their last opportunity to jump us. They have an impressive game with us being idle. This week worries me a little.

November 29: We play Auburn and they're off --> we get the opportunity right back, we'll have some spotlight and the chance to show what we can do.

Then it's the SEC championship with the opportunity to make up any lost ground on the 22nd. I think it works out better for us all-in-all

If we make the SEC Championship game against Florida, a win against the Gators would put us over the top if Penn State is threatening at that point. I don't see that scenario happening, but it could. So much football left to play. Still, this is why I want to play Florida if we make the SEC Championship. We won't get a boost from playing Georgia again.

I completely agree, we get a much better boost from playing Florida. However, I think Florida might be a tougher game for us so I'm really torn here.

It doesn't matter what PSU does if we win out and win the SECCG. We will have a whole game over them no matter who we play be it Ga or Fl.

I really think that this late in the season, voters take into account the full body of a team's work over the season - as opposed to one game. Early on, it's nothing but a cross between a beauty pageant, a horse race with jockeying for position, and a stock market full of speculators - trying to figure where a team really belongs. And that is probably one reason why the BCS rankings don't crank out until week 6.

Man, just being back in the mix is so fun!

IF we come out flat against Arky State and let it go into the 4th qtr, I can see Penn St possibly leapfrogging us. Not that I think that will happen, but I think it's important that we win convincingly next week at home, something we really haven't done all year, except against Western Kentucky.

Of the top 3, Penn St has the best chance to go undefeated. They have a relatively weak schedule left with no championship game while both Tex and us have some major games left along with a championship game. The odds of both Tex and us both going undefeated are probably not that good.

To be the best, we have to beat the best. I would love for us to play UF in the championship game.

Ahh, correct but to be a champion sometimes requires some luck in addition to playing really well. For example I think we match up better against Penn State than we do Texas. We'd be luckier to face them in the title game than the horns. We need a few things to go our way in order to win a championship and sometimes getting to play a team you match up better against is one of those things.

If USC had not fallen to the Beavers early this year, chances are we wouldn't even be talking about this right now. Sometimes you need a little luck and I think that favorable matchups can be part of that.
