Re: Best players Ever from your high school

My school can't compete with most of you guys. I'm from a small school in Magee, MS

Kyle Wallace (Miss. State)
And a kicker to Troy State, but his name escapes me. That's about it.
I thought the Mangum brothers were from Magee..One of them spent some time at Alabama and eventually went on to the NFL....

Re: Best players Ever from your high school

Geez, how could I forget Tobie? I went to high school with Tobie's older brother Todd. I can remember playing sandlot ball back in the day. Tobie was always the toughest to tackle.

I had no idea DuBose once walked the sidelines at FHS. You learn something new everyday.

Fairhope was a powerhouse until they built Daphne HS.

I'm a Fairhope alum and graduated with Tobie's older brother Todd.

Whatever happened to Banks High School in Birmingham. To the Younger generation, before Hoover High was the 'charmed' program ,when Hoover was Berry actually, , there was Banks Jets! I went to the Banks vs Woodlawn Nathan vs Rutledge game! Awesome crowd!

Before the Academy system came to town, the public school in Linden (I think they were called the Red Raiders) had some terrific teams. In fact, trophies dotted the halls of the HS in my years there (87-89) from those days. Didn't know any of the greats from those teams... but they were good in their day.

Tim... what years did you attend at Silas (I think I've asked you that before)? One year, we were supposed to play there and had to reschule the game due to one of the gas wells catching on fire. The whole area had to be evacuated that night... and it was just prior to the game when we got the news. My Sr. year of HS, they drummed us by about 40 points... and I took a beating. :pDT_Armataz_02_16:
I was at Silas from '83 to '87, and I graduated in May of '87. But, I went to Patrick Henry (now Alabama Southern College) in Gilbertown for one year and worked at The Choctaw Advocate in Butler during that time as the sports writer. I remember the game with Linden being cancelled in '87 because of the sulfur gas clouds from one of the refineries near Silas. I can't remember if they re-scheduled the game or not.

Anyway, Linden had a good team in '85. I remember you guys having this HUGE player who played primarily fullback. I think they said he weighed like 315 pounds and he had to be close to six feet tall. I remember one play where Linden had first and goal (by the way, the game was played in Linden), and they handed the ball off to this guy and literally walked across the goal line with a couple of players on our team literally hanging off each of his shoulder. he walked across the goal line like they weren't even there. I hated to lose, but I couldn't help but to laugh. It was a sight! I think we lost the game 18-12, but it could have been MUCH worse.

I can't remember the last time Silas played Linden. They've had so much change in the last 20 years. They moved the stadium and high school to Gilbertown and they're down to 2-A.

Heard his name, years ago. I left Mobile in '73, so didn't keep up, with Mobile high school sports, afterwards. Did he go to Auburn?

Best high school athlete of all time? Nationally? Alabama? Mobile County? Vigor? Don't know 'bout that, Cornbiscuit. I'm sure he was good. But, best, even at Vigor, might be a stretch. Billy Coleman (VHS '58) earned all-state honors in football and basketball. Plus, he was a high school all-american. Also, Mobile County has produced many, many high school athletes, over the years.

Earlier, I left out Charlie Parker ('59). He played guard at Mississippi Southern (USM) and played afterwards for the Denver Broncos.

I was exgerrateing, but he went to Auburn and was injured his whole career basically, though he was Freshmen All-SEC.

He is comparable to Ronald Curry, another HS legend.
