I contracted avian flu once on a duck hunting trip as a much younger person. Our whole group got infected with it but one. We were so sick and riddled with fever that we could not walk within a few minutes of onset of symptoms in the middle of a duck blind. We had to be laid on the back of 4wheelers and carried out back to the trucks. The body pain was excruciating literally writhing in body pain for 24 hours with no relief attainable. My fever got so high it created ulcers in my lips, mouth, and esophagus that it was too painful to eat. I don't remember too much congestion or breathing issues. But the pain and fever were otherworldly.

This is stuff should not be dismissed too lightly.

Wow! I always figured there was a delay in the onset of flu symptoms. Is this typical of bird flu? So quickly?

If this is the case, if an epidemic comes out of this, we are in a world of hurt.

I almost died of bird flu in 1957, commonly called the "Asian Flu." I had a room with a shared bathroom with the head of the Spanish Department at the time. He realized that he hadn't heard me in the bathroom in days. I couldn't get out of bed. When he found me, he notified a teacher also from Decatur, who had a room on the same floor as the boarding house. He made a bed in the back of his car and brought me back to Decatur, where I did get hydration and some treatment. In T-Town, DCH was full and all the fraternity houses were turned into sick wards. We've not really had anything like that since then. I didn't realize until later just how brave the teacher was in what he did for me...

Time to buy stock in Invermectin.

And if so, will it be so heavily politicized?

I doubt we are going to be ready with vaccines, and we have an incoming bunch (RFK, Jr et. al.) who are anti-vax or at least vaccine skeptics. Add that to those opposed to mask mandates.

We've seen this movie before.
Time to buy stock in Invermectin, bleach and bright lights.

Well, when your handling infected ducks we probably got an acute dose of the virus...

But it did happen fast. I never threwup. But some of the guys in my party would climb out of the blind to throwup then collapse in pain. My pain was so severe, I went to the local infirmary for IV pain meds and fluids overnight. The only thing that marginally soothed me was my very hot nurse coming in to check on me.

This stuff would definitely definitely kill older people if its the same thing...

There's no doubt that the Asian Flu, again, also a bird flu, would kill me now. It's been interesting to see the severity of today's flu and Covid swap places. The few I know who've had both all say Covid is far easier. I know that I had a couple of rough nights with Covid, but with the Paxlovid, followed by Prednisone for the after-effects, I was nowhere near as ill as I've been in the past with flu...

I haven't had the flu since I was 17 years old. I honestly don't remember which version of the glu it was but I remember being sicker than I have ever been. I have had pneumonia 3 times in my life and the flu was far worse

I've had it twice - 1957 and about 15 years ago, from accepting free food from a vendor in Costco, when I suspected she was ill. (When I recovered and finally made it back to Costco, I inquired after her - she was still out with flu.) Never had pneumonia...

I have never once tried a 'free sample' at Costco or anywhere else - it weirds me out.

I've had both flu and pneumonia multiple times. I'm trying to cough up my lungs with both, but the flu also brings massive body aches, fever, and chills (as does Covid). Fortunately, I was vaccinated, so the flu and Covid didn't last too long.

I'd always followed the same rule and have ever since. I forget what she tempted me with, a sausage ball, I think. They now all wear masks, I notice. I had a very good friend who was a notorious penny-pincher. He mentioned once going to Costco for lunch. I assumed he meant pizza or chili dog. It turned out that he meant he "grazed" the free samples...

When I was single and just starting out on my own, I went to the store to buy dinner once. They were handing out free pizza samples. I just meandered around the queue about 4 times, and that was my dinner.

</sure beat ramen noodles and canned tuna>

During the 2020 election, biden and the laughing hyena campaigned on many issues. One of those being “they wouldn’t take a vaccine developed by the Trump administration.” Once elected, mandates were passed to force the vaccines to many workers in various sectors. How exactly did this help? One week it’s “I wouldn’t take that vaccine” to a few weeks later “you must be vaccinated.”

This is exactly why rational people don’t take what politicians say at face value. Truth is, we really don’t know what they truly believe or what their real motives are (other than getting re-elected, that is.)

Biden said Americans should trust a coronavirus vaccine developed under the Trump administration only if the president gives “honest answers” to questions about its safety, effectiveness and equitable distribution. “I trust vaccines. I trust scientists. But I don’t trust Donald Trump,” Biden said. “And at this point, the American people can’t, either.”

Biden cast doubt not only on Trump but also on those around him. Asked whether he trusted the CDC and FDA, Biden said he did not trust “people like the fellow that just took a leave of absence.” He appeared to be referring to Michael Caputo, assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services, who urged Trump’s supporters to prepare for an armed insurrection and accused scientists in his agency of “sedition.”

Biden said he would have no problems endorsing a vaccine — provided it met certain criteria. If the administration greenlights a vaccine, Biden said, “who will validate it was driven by science? What groups of scientists?”

He added that Americans must be confident “distribution will be safe and cost-free,” with a plan that is “without a hint of favoritism.”
