Bob Davie: Texas will win

It is obvious that most of the people who have posted on this thread are too young to have been around during the sixties, when Bear Bryant based his game-psychology upon poor-mouthing about how great those "big fine boys" on the other team were such great football players that there was no use for his own "skinny-legged" players to even get on the field with them.

Bear Bryant loved bulletin board material like this fromm Bob Davie. I doubt if I can find it in BEAR, but there is a "passage" in there describing how someone had written that that the mamas and papas of the Florida players were better people, or some such thing, and how Bear used this as bulletin board material.

Bear's phrase was "fat-headed." He didn't want his players to get "fat-headed" about playing any opponent, and the best way to keep his players ready to play was to play up just this very sort of thing, how people didn't expect his Alabama team to be able to stand up to the upcoming opponent.

I have to believe that there is SOMEBODY on the Alabama roster who reads this very Tidefans site, including this very thread under its tantalizing title, "Bob Davie: Texas will win." And this same guy surely spreads it to someone else on the roster, and soon it's all over the team that Bob Davie thinks Texas will beat Alabama. You can't buy better motivation. Thank you, Bob Davie.

You're not thinking of when he was discussing his A&M's team win over Texas are you? He built his boys up and told 'em stuff to the effect of he knew they could win because their momma and poppas raised 'em good and to not quit etc.
Well A&M pulled the upset and won. After the game a reporter asked an A&M player why they beat Texas and he replied "I guess they didn't come from good mommas and poppas" Coach Bryant wrote that he just about died when he heard that  Needless to say, UT used it for locker room material.... and won the next year.

Hijacking this thread but "fat- headed" makes me remember another funny part in that book. Coach Bryant felt his players were too complacent and used to winning and didn't have that drive anymore. So he sits them all down and starts rattling off "Bobby. they says you're all distracted with your girlfriend. Billy, they say you're already focused on the NFL. Johnny, they say you're thinking about graduating....
"They" think this and "they" think that. Then he goes "do you know who 'they' are?? and jams his thumb into his chest and says "ME!!"
Needless to say, his boys were focused and ready to play

I gotta go reread that book now

After listening to that appalling moralistic jabbering last night during the Tech/MSU game, with Davie going on and on sticking the knife into Mike Leach and nary a word about the problems Tech has had with the James kid (or his father, for that matter), I finally had to mute the TV before I threw my shoe through it. ESPN and their analysts have embarrassed themselves over this issue and I have no respect for ANY of their obviously BIASED opinions. If they're biased about one issue, then they're biased about others and this has been blatant.

If he knows so much about football coaching and how to do it, why didn't he last at those schools where he did coach? Me thinks maybe he wasn't as good as he thought he was?????

All those fumes from Bob's fake-bake spray-on tan have affected his linguistic and analytical skills, apparently.

But the fact remains that Texas can win this game. Sure, the 'Horns looked somewhat pedestrian against Nebraska; but how many times have Bama fans rationalized a close victory against a supposedly inferior opponent, like this: "Well, you know, the Tide always plays down to the competition"? And lest we forget, Alabama is one late TD drive (vs. AU) and a positively Herculean and near-miraculous individual effort (Terence Cody vs. UT) away from a Sugar Bowl-bound 11-2, instead of 13-0.

Texas can win because its defense is athletic, aggressive, well-coached and opportunistic. Their offense is outstanding in capitalizing on opportunities created by the defense. And while their offense perhaps might be somewhat one-dimensional, you have to admit that Colt McCoy is one heckuva dimension.

What scares me is fat-headedness, believing "your" own hype, complacency, and coming out flat. Even CNS' teams aren't immune: see the 2008 season Sugar Bowl.

That actually makes me feel better. He's hands-down the worst color analyst working today. It amazes me how he keeps climbing the ladder at ESPN. Listening to Mike Patrick fawn over him like a wide-eyed schoolgirl during the TTU-Michigan State game just about made me sick.

Not only does Davie have all the linguistic skills of Les Miles after ingesting a blister pack of horse tranquilizers, he's pretty much like the FedEx "French Benefits" guy -- he is consistently wrong about pretty much everything. About the only thing he can do is find a Cover 2 alignment on tape. Listen to him for about 5 minutes and it becomes readily clear why he didn't make it at Notre Dame.

lol that is great Jess. lolol

;)You have a hundred or so annalists giving Bama the victory and just a “couple” giving the Horns the nod. You guys are really scrambling to find disrespect. The victory looks to be “in the bank”.

Texas will win because of one thing: heart, swagger, Colt and Mack's pre-game speech. ;)

If those reasons are all it will take for Texas to win, then Bama shouldn't even show up. The reality is that the game still has to be played no matter your opinion or mine and the best TEAM will win. It's my opinion that Bama will play as a TEAM on both sides of the ball. Sure Mark Ingram may get a lot of attention, but he will be the first to uplift his offensive line. Sure Julio Jones will get a lot of attention, but he will be the first to tell you the other receivers on the team are just as capable as himself. And have you ever watched him block down field for the running backs? Sure Rolando McClain will get a lot of attention, but have you seen Eryck Anders, Marcell Dareus, or Mt. Cody put a lot of heat on a QB. Have you seen how our corners can cover? This BAMA TEAM plays well together and knows what must be done to win and that's my reasons for believing BAMA will win. Yet, my opinion will not win the game for them. The game must still be played and may the best TEAM win.

It's like ESPN is really trying to see how much influence their station can have on a game. Sort of like Pat Dye's "Not Man Enough" quote but on a nationwide audience. Also, the last time I checked, Applewhite and Muschump don't have any eligibilty left. This game will come down to how the players respond on the field. If they don't have it down by now they can build on it next year.

It's nice to see our defense get respect on a Tide board. Thank you for that.

I'd add one thing to that: Texas gets a lot of TD's when our offense isn't even on the field. We do a lot of things as well as any team in the country:
-Multiple players have kickoff returns for TD's
-We have multiple punt returns for TD's
-We probably lead the nation in "pick 6's" on defense
-We block as many punts as anyone.

I mention those things because I don't expect our offense to put up more than 24-28 points against your outstanding defense. . . but our defense and special teams give us a shot to win even if they don't.

I think that other than turnovers, the stat that may correlate best with the "W" is McCoy's rushing total. If he can rush for 50+, it keeps the chains moving, keeps our hurry-up offense on the field, and keeps the Bama linebackers from teeing off on the Texas running backs (who provide little other than "keep-them-honest").

Bama should be favored to win, but I think those predicting a Tide blowout are underestimating my Horns. We've got a shot.

I just want everyone to see that Texas does have some fans.

There is this southern bug that resides in the barnyard. All day long it rolls poop into balls much bigger than it is. Sometimes it will try to roll big poop balls up hill and they struggle until the poop ball rolls back over them. We call these stupid little poop rollers Tumble T-rds(rymes with birds) Thus Bob Davies is just a egotistical Tumble Tur*

These two were back at it yesterday...Brando says he gets to pick both teams now. He picked Bama to win yesterday.

Danielson on Finebaum seemed to pull the karma stuff for picking Texas then said he liked Bama because they have more ways to beat you.
