[this is ridiculously long... but it's supposed to be when we brag on our kids, right?

Older daughter just selected Notre Dame over Bama and Ga Tech. Taking her talents to South BEND
(allusion to Lebron James if you remember his "The Decision" ).
Definitely think it is the best fit for what she wants out of school - and life. Selfishly was hoping Bama, but we have no doubt she'll enjoy the ND experience. She'll be on an AFROTC Level 1 scholarship (which pays tuition & fees & books anywhere she was accepted and is how ND gonna get paid
) and majoring in aerospace engineering. Assuming she stays committed after the 1st year, she'll be obligated for 4yrs active duty after graduation. That's the deal.
Waitlisted at Vandy & Northwestern and had a deferred decision (then ultimately rejected) by MIT. Accepted at a few others but the 3 above she was accepted into and 2 waitlisted for were her top choices from the beginning of this process 2 years ago. She had very high aspirations from the start and ultimately had 3 really great options with distinct differences, pros, and cons.
We quizzed her on all the important considerations like what she's going to do if ND plays Bama in a National Championship or playoffs again... "Oh, I
always want Alabama to win" ... so - at least as of right now - she's been raised right
She's a finalist for valedictorian at her HS. Had her interview with the selection committee yesterday. Her school has 4 "academies" where you can earn admittance through high achievement to their academy of fine arts, academy of science, academy of liberal arts, and AP Capstone. She earned entry (through multiple AP courses & AP exam scores & essays & service requirements) into all four. Also was a National Merit Finalist and AP Capstone Scholar with Distinction. She'll have completed 13 AP courses. (I literally had no clue what AP was when I was in HS)
She's a multiple sport letter winner and was team captain in cross-country. Made All-state Band 1st chair clarinet 3 years, played in the Utah Youth Symphony, plays about 8 instruments, crochet's amazing things, and reads voraciously. Is reasonably conversant and pretty fluent reader/writer in French. Loves football & baseball, physics & calculus, art, literature, philosophy, economics, etc.
I tell her she's a renaissance woman. She'll get the opportunity at ND to feed her soul + take rigorous courses in liberal arts + engineering. Getting/having to do all three there probably made the biggest impact on her decision.
Obviously, we're incredibly proud of how she has focused and worked hard, chose the hard stuff because it was hard (and exceled at it all), and wasn't just a book nerd. She represented her school on multiple levels and in multiple organizations inside and outside of school (Girl's State, UT Gov. Honors Academy). That's what I love most about her achievements. She tried a lot of things and worked really hard to excel at them with very little pressure from us.
Anyway, can't believe she graduates HS in about 8 weeks and is then onto a
totally new series of challenges in August.
