Love this thread:

Oldest is 20, starting 1B on his JUCO baseball team. The first NJCAA rankings just came out and they are in the top spot at 18-1.

Middle is 16, doing well in HS tennis. He’s dual enrolled in FL Virtual HS classes and taking classes at the same JUCO as his older brother. Just found out he’s on track to graduate HS with his AA degree. Will definitely be a Bright Futures scholarship student.

Youngest is about to be 12 and just his first dinger!

It’s been a solid week at our week!

Son number 2 started a new job last week in the construction/contracting field. He previously inspected homes in and around the Nashville area. His wife is still doing well with her second round of chemo treatments and will have reconstruction surgery sometime in late June or early July.

Well, Lily turns 18 tomorrow. Not sure how that happened. She'll be out of the house and off to college in a few months. So, Lan and I are trying to make the most of the time before Lily is a full-adult. The Japan trip was for Spring Break, and we are planning to go to Vietnam for three weeks in June. For this weekend, we secured a house at Crescent Lake a little over an hour away. Lily and her friends (with my wife's supervision) will have a blast. As always, there will be a mix of American and Vietnamese foods. We are caravaning down after work, but my role is just pack mule. I was in charge of the Costco run and countless other supplies. I'll come back to the house with my MIL, who wants to go on the drive and see the lake. Lan will stay the weekend with the kids. Happy birthday, Lily!

16 year old high school junior scored a 34 on the ACT 2 weeks ago, taking again today because she wants an 36, and she’s dead set on, well, Bama.

Congratulations on probably not having to pay for her college education!

I’m certainly glad to have her in Tuscaloosa, but am deadly curious….what is attracting her to UA?

Career goal is finance and she wants it to be a big SEC school. Bama is a good school for that so that’s what she’s gunning for.

She wants to do sorority though and GOOD GOD the dues at Bama are ridiculous.

you probably know this but that will get her some serious $$$ here. If she can do well enough on Nat Merit to make semi or finalist, she will be sending money home.

I was in the Greek system in the late 70s / early 80s. Even adjusting for inflation, it’s more expensive now because the new houses are in the $15 million range. More than that if you’re just now starting construction. We just didn’t have that kind of overhead.

The Greeks can be a boon or a bane. Be sure she doesn’t adopt her pledge sisters’ priorities on social vs. academics. They don’t have near the talent your daughter does.

[this is ridiculously long... but it's supposed to be when we brag on our kids, right? ;) ]

Older daughter just selected Notre Dame over Bama and Ga Tech. Taking her talents to South BEND :D (allusion to Lebron James if you remember his "The Decision" ).

Definitely think it is the best fit for what she wants out of school - and life. Selfishly was hoping Bama, but we have no doubt she'll enjoy the ND experience. She'll be on an AFROTC Level 1 scholarship (which pays tuition & fees & books anywhere she was accepted and is how ND gonna get paid :D ) and majoring in aerospace engineering. Assuming she stays committed after the 1st year, she'll be obligated for 4yrs active duty after graduation. That's the deal.

Waitlisted at Vandy & Northwestern and had a deferred decision (then ultimately rejected) by MIT. Accepted at a few others but the 3 above she was accepted into and 2 waitlisted for were her top choices from the beginning of this process 2 years ago. She had very high aspirations from the start and ultimately had 3 really great options with distinct differences, pros, and cons.

We quizzed her on all the important considerations like what she's going to do if ND plays Bama in a National Championship or playoffs again... "Oh, I always want Alabama to win" ... so - at least as of right now - she's been raised right :D

She's a finalist for valedictorian at her HS. Had her interview with the selection committee yesterday. Her school has 4 "academies" where you can earn admittance through high achievement to their academy of fine arts, academy of science, academy of liberal arts, and AP Capstone. She earned entry (through multiple AP courses & AP exam scores & essays & service requirements) into all four. Also was a National Merit Finalist and AP Capstone Scholar with Distinction. She'll have completed 13 AP courses. (I literally had no clue what AP was when I was in HS)

She's a multiple sport letter winner and was team captain in cross-country. Made All-state Band 1st chair clarinet 3 years, played in the Utah Youth Symphony, plays about 8 instruments, crochet's amazing things, and reads voraciously. Is reasonably conversant and pretty fluent reader/writer in French. Loves football & baseball, physics & calculus, art, literature, philosophy, economics, etc.

I tell her she's a renaissance woman. She'll get the opportunity at ND to feed her soul + take rigorous courses in liberal arts + engineering. Getting/having to do all three there probably made the biggest impact on her decision.

Obviously, we're incredibly proud of how she has focused and worked hard, chose the hard stuff because it was hard (and exceled at it all), and wasn't just a book nerd. She represented her school on multiple levels and in multiple organizations inside and outside of school (Girl's State, UT Gov. Honors Academy). That's what I love most about her achievements. She tried a lot of things and worked really hard to excel at them with very little pressure from us.

Anyway, can't believe she graduates HS in about 8 weeks and is then onto a totally new series of challenges in August.

I’m trying to push her to do Million Dollar Band. Bam. There’s your networking WITHOUT the outrageous sorority dues.
Of course, if everything else is paid by scholarships (and with her scores it very well may be) that becomes less of an issue. I think sororities can be an awesome experience if YOU (meaning the student) use them instead of letting them use you.

My wife was president of Panhellenic her senior year. She was an academic superstar in her sorority, so she got to sort of set her own standard for what she wanted to do and what things she wanted to attend or be a part of. (She was also on Bama Forensics (speech/debate) that won a couple of national championships in her 4 years so she didn't have a lot of time (or interest) to party).

Make friends, work the connections, have a safe place to live, figure out how to get involved on campus, etc. The sorority houses now are pretty incredible. However, as 4Q alludes to, a lot has changed in the 30+ years since we were there :D Bama Rush doesn't help!

Good luck and keep us informed. Also, get her a bunch of Bama gear. :D

Since she lives in-state, she will make money. We moved to Alabama and established residence so the scholarship covered more of my son's expenses. She/you will be so happy for the scholarship. Being debt free when she gets out of college will be well worth the time and effort she is putting into her high school academics. Congratulations to you all!

thank you. my dad taught me when we emigrated to the United States (I was almost 9 yrs old at the time) the importance of financial planning not only for my retirement but my child/childrens’ education. as soon as both my girls were born the wife and I started a 529 plan. the oldest who’s about to go to Auburn has significant scholarship awards (though not a true full ride…..surprising for a natl merit finalist) but she’ll graduate debt free and will have a significant amount left in her 529 plan for medical school since she’s dead set on pursuing that career.

This one finished her first year at UAB and is now officially a junior lol. View attachment 42057
And this one just found out she’s going to be the captain of the color guard for HTHS for her senior year. No mean feat becuase Trussville has an enormous auxiliary

They are all grown up now. Seems like they used to be a lot younger playing soccer.
