First post. Don't know if anyone'd be interested in this, but I just found out that Brodie Croyle and a couple other guys from the football team are playing on a softball team in our league. Kinda surprised me with Brodie's knee injury and all but sure enough it's him. So if you'd like to watch these boys flash some leather instead of pigskin, I'll post up their schedule for the rest of the season...

May 18th, 9:15 at Sokol Park (in Northport)
May 23rd, 9:15 at Bowers Park (in Tuscaloosa)
May 25th, 8:15 at Sokol Park
Jun 1st, 9:15 at Bowers Park

Team is called the "Bamma Slammas". Black jerseys with red numbers. Free admission to the games. Might tide you over till summer camp starts :)

WOW! Brodie playing softball... sounds like something I need to go check out. Problem is... I wouldn't watch the game. I would stare at Brodie the entire time. It dosen't surprise me though that Brodie is playing softball... acoording to his family, he has always played a part in many sports

I'm sure the coaches aren't thrilled about it. He needs to spend a little less time on the softball diamond and a little more time in the weight room, or we could be in another world of hurt this year.

I wonder if this causes Coach Shula any worries?

A couple of weeks ago CJK commented on Brodie and his "injury bug" with the quip, "He could get hurt walking across campus."

I hate to say it, but I fall in the same category Earle brought up last year. It isn't a matter if he is going to get hurt, it is a matter of when. I realize, that is a pretty pessimistic approach and I definitely don't wish any hurt on any player. However, I'm anxious to see JPW on the field. He's pretty well already received the nod for the starting job in '06 by the staff. Let's get him ready as quick as possible to SEC play.

Should not be a big surprise, he had a little fun on the diamond in HS too.

Look at who checks in at number 2 for highest individual batting average in baseball for the state of AL...

I would be worried if I were him. I am prettty sure that softball causes more injuries nationwide than any other sport. Part of the reason that is true is that more people play softball than any other sport and the people playing softball aren't always in the best of condition, nor are the fields. Lots of sprained ankles, etc. I had more than a few softball injuries over the years. lol

For God's sake. They're in college. Let them be normal students.

So if he can "get hurt walking across campus" as some one said, are the coaches supposed to lock him in his room and not let him drive, or go fishing, or hunting (all very dangerous activities)? Geez, maybe he shouldn't shower for fear that he might slip and hurt himself!

There have been any number of players at UA who have had more than one injury, but I haven't seen the "injury prone" moniker associated with them to the level it has been for Brodie. It's amazing that he made it playing football from 8th grade to his senior year in high school without any serious injury, if he's so injury prone. He played a lot his RSfreshman year backing up Tyler, who himself was injured a lot that year, without getting hurt. I seem to recall he even started a couple of those games, and I can remember him actually getting hit a few times too. Imagine that, no injuries that year when he's so fragile and injury prone. And that was while running an option based offense.

He's had 2 different injuries in the span of 2 years while holding the starting job. So have a lot of other guys playing the game (Jason White anyone?) To hear some of you talk, he's so fragile he'd fall apart if you looked at him hard. I'm just not buying it myself.

I don't understand the expectation that he will surely get hurt this fall. Last year's injury to the knee was a fluke that could have happened to any of us while walking down the street (twisting a leg the wrong way) and had nothing to do with getting hit, or not being somehow "big" enough to take the punishment.

He's played more seasons of football in his career without injury than he has with injury. Why not wait to see how it plays out this fall before labeling him a sure bet not to finish a season.

As much as us fans might like to seal BC away in an injury proof environment until the season starts I'm afraid that a 21 year old student at Tuscaloosa is going to want to participate in campus life.

Also, I don't buy the argument that softball poses a risk to Brodie. All of the players engage in physical activity every day just to keep in shape. Weightroom, jogging, calisthentics, football practice, etc., all pose all an equal or greater risk of injury than shagging a fly or swatting a softball.

The kids are in school to get an education, inside and outside the classroom.

What in the he!! does lifting weights have to do with a knee injury? I suppose that would have prevented Hudson, Castille or Britts injuries also. Man, leave them alone and get a life!

I guess I see both sides. On one hand, you can’t put these players on leashes, and, shucks, if Brodie can’t make it through a softball season without hurting himself then how is he gonna withstand a hit from some lineman? On the other hand, you gotta wonder about the risk-reward of a guy who’s rehabilitating his ACL playing softball two nights a week in a city rec league. Is it worth it, especially considering what it might do to our season if he has a set back?

Anyhow, I was just excited he was playing in our league! Makes an old fart like me feel like an athlete again :)
