The NCAA was clear in it’s message to Coach Mark Gottfried and the staff at Alabama in 2000. Even though the team had a great season, had 20+ wins which normally would insure a berth in the Big Dance, Alabama didn’t receive an invitation and was forced into the NIT. Their message? A weak out of conference schedule, even with 20 wins in your season, won’t assure you an invitation.
Alabama understood, and had one of the toughest schedules in the nation this season. "Two years ago we were in a situation like this and we weren't selected," Gottfried said. "There was a message sent. You need to go out and put your fanny on the line (by playing tough non-conference teams). If you don't, you shouldn't be rewarded.
