A tempting assumption, but what IF Cecil is telling the truth? Say the money was offered independently of the Newton's knowledge, with the agent running a scam on his own. A relationship is not the same thing as claiming representation.

I'm not saying this is how I think it went down (nor am I a Bama fan), but this is by definition, an assumption. That said, Cecil has plenty to explain, whether the accusations are fair or not.
My only problem with this is that I find it very hard to believe that someone would offer a recruit for $$$ if he was not sure he could DELIVER the recruit to the school that pays.

If the Newtons REALLY had no idea about the whole thing, then what does Rogers do when a school agrees to pay and it comes time for him to deliver Newton? If the Newtons had no idea of his offer, how would Rogers be able to make good on it? It just seems to me that nobody would be stupid enough to make an offer like that if he wasn't sure he could come through on it...

This is the key.

No way would Rogers risk his entire career without knowing that he was going to be able to cash in. No way he does this on a lark, hoping to convince the Newtons later. No way.

Unless the MSU player made the whole thing up, the Newtons were involved with an agent trying to sell Cam's services. It is really that simple.

That's exactly what I'm thinking.

Now, like others have said, Cecil may have done it completely without Cam's knowledge or he may have just told Cam to turn a blind eye so he could play innocent if they got caught. The former is highly unlikely, but the latter sounds like a perfect explanation for Cam allowing Cecil to decide where he would go to school...

It's simple. Cam was thought to be a heavy Miss State lean at one time. Rogers takes a gamble and makes the offer independent of the Newton's. After all, the Miss St. people saw them together on the official visit (which would be illegal itself if it can be shown Cam didn't pay for it). Cam changes his mind and picks Auburn. Rogers gives the money back and thinks, hey, it was worth the risk. At this point Miss St. can't turn him in, because they'd be admitting their own guilt. Rogers is a former Miss St. guy, and this is exactly the kind of thing that can turn allies against each other (Rogers and Bond). Even if he doesn't give the money back, Miss St. can't report him (but might have him taken out by the Mafia :biggrin2:).

The hitch to this is that I doubt Miss St would just fork over $180,000 without somehow verifying that he is actually representing the Newtons. But it is possible. Consider that Mississippi State isn't being any more forthcoming than Auburn at this point. What they have come forward with was a leak to the media that is still shrouded in mystery. Mullen is saying the same thing Chizik is.. "I can't talk about it yet". They could just as easily be in trouble, especially if you buy into the idea that Urban is behind this, as many Auburn people do. Why would Miss St. leak a story that might implicate them? Pressure from Mullen's old boss Urban that is even more damning if they don't leak it first? On Finebaum today, Thammel (NYT writer) refused to deny that Urban was involved. I didn't hear it, but those who did said his silence was deafening.

Another angle Auburn people have suggested is that Miss St. offered Cecil the money and he called foul ball and told Cam "It's Auburn". Obviously, Auburn fans would like to think this is true. But if this were the case, I don't think the Newton's would be silent right now, unless there really is a gag order.

Just playing devil's advocate...

You say that its simple, then take 3 paragraphs to spell out how simple it is.

Possible, not plausible.

Are you asking me, or Cecil?
I wish someone would shed some light on the difference in the quotes. The Montgomery paper hasn't said a thing about what the ESPN.com article says. There is an obvious difference in the two quotes.

Then, 'O cow milking one, pray give us thine astute and acute wisdom on precisely why this is not plausible, if you will please, O' maestro of the barnyard..
