Classless fans

I lucked up and got tickets to the game at the last minute. WHAT A GAME!!! I've never seen that much enthusiasm from fans at an Alabama game. I've heard the Florida game was louder, but this one was loud for sure.

My day had one flaw in it, though. While walking to the car after the game, I heard some Alabama fans yelling at a family wearing orange. When I figured out what they were saying, I couldn't believe my ears.

"Go to hell, hillbillies!" was just one of the things I heard.

The UT family consisted of what looked like 2 grandparents, 2 parents, and a teenage girl. I was embarrassed that these rednecks were representing the school and program that I love so much. I was so embarrassed, I went over and shook the elderly man's hand, and told him "great game, I hope y'all have a safe trip back."

Then the rednecks yelled at me. Now I'll admit I hate Fat Phil, the Tennessee program, and everything associated with it, but I don't hate their fans. To attack a family who is just following their team is the most classless act I've seen from any Alabama fan. I hope I never see anything like that again.

On a lighter note, Roll Tide!!! 7 and 0, 6 to go!!!

Good job there! Thanks for being "Goodwill Ambassadors"! I've seen the same problems over the years IN VERY ISOLATED SPOTS coming from both sides at nearly every game I've been to, both home and away, and I've had to do what you did at times when my (usually inebriated) Crimson-clad pseudofans chose to become heathen barbarians...

Do we have some bad fans? Sure, there are a few pockets that are so insecure with their man/womanhood that they would stoop to junk like we've all witnessed. However, I dare say, that in 30 years of going to college football games, I'd still put our fans up against any in the country AS A WHOLE, from all I've seen.

Roll Tide!

There is no need to harass a family that is just walking back to their car after the game. If they had been talking smack, it would be a little different, but somehow, I don't think grandma and grandpa were doing that.

Every team has a few jerky fans, even us.

You definitely did the right thing.

yup..when you have 80k-90k people all together, everyone is not going to be on good behavior. That's just to be expected. Best you can do is represent UA to the best of your ability.

Without a doubt..............

you did the right thing. There is a bad seed in every bunch & we are no different. For you idiots who give us a bad name, grow up, learn how to celebrate & enjoy the spotlight. To all the rest of us who know how to handle ourselves in VICTORY, ROLL TIDE!!!!!!

I'm not justifying their behavior, but I've been treated worse in Knoxville and Auburn. There are always going to be a few idiots who give the rest of us a black eye.

I'd be willing to lay odds that the guilty party had never set foot in a classroom at the University of Alabama, and I'd be willing to bet even money that they set foot in a high school classroom as little as possible.

You did the right thing, for sure.

I should note that was the only instance I saw where the fans got out of hand. For the most part, our fans showed class. I mean, directing the fight song, or singing Rammer Jammer towards UT fans is just showing enthusiasm. To tell them to "go to hell" is a different beast all together.

You should have seen the look of surprise on the faces of the family when I walked over and said what I said. When I approached them they seemed scared of me, like they didn't know what I was going to do. After I said what I said, there was a look of shock on their faces for a moment, and then they were all smiles and thank you's.

Thanks for doing that and setting the record straight. While I so much wanted to say stuff to UT fans I didn't and I never do. All I said was good game, have a safe trip home, etc... They're people just like us even if their allegiance is a little screwed up. ;)

I did try to speak to almost every UT fan I passed...again, nothing negative. I did get a few smart comments. There were some that were very bitter. :)

Good job

For all we know they could have been UA grads, a degree doesn't necessarily equate class. I want to say thanks to this person who extended hand of friendship. I had two elderly ladies decked out in all things orange walking down the street ahead of me and family. They had to be in their 80's. no telling how many games they have attended. One of them yelled out at a group of young students sitting on a car--we'll get you next time! We all howled. Who would have thought Granny had a mouth. LOL and RTR

Well you did do the right thing. I went to TN last year for the game and their fans are much much worse. So dont feel too too bad. But good job taking the high road and showing some class.

I too witnessed some inappropriate behavior. UT fans sitting in front of me were constantly harrassed by couple sitting next to me. They put garbage in their seats when they stood up. They threw things at them. They made some pretty negative comments too. Bad fish in every pond.

Setting foot in a classroom or not setting foot in a classroom has nothing to do with proper behavior or doing what's right.

"Your Mama had to have raised you better..."

I believe certain "fans" of the program would do well to remember what Coach Bryant used to tell his players about hot-dogging- "act like you've been there before". Show some class, even if you aren't shown class first or in return. We have been here before -and we'll be back--often, so show some class, people.

All teams have bad fans, and sad as it is to say, our bad Bama fans are some of the worst.

People who know me know how very much I hate Tennessee, specifically Brutus Fulmerus.

But I had nothing but positives from the UT fans Saturday, from those tailgating near us who were kind enough to share their Kentucky Bourbon  and cut up in good natured fun to those leaving the stadium who repeatedly congratulated us on our win...I hope I was gracious in victory, congratulating them on the tough game they gave us. Both teams left it all on the field. It was a helluva game, and what one expects when the Crimson and the Urnge tee it up.

I long for the days when this game's about the rivalry and not about Phil Fulmer. Until he goes, however, the animosity will remain.

Thank you for your class act, Carolina. Unfortunately all schools have folks who act like morons. I am glad you showed the UT fans how the great majority of Bama fans act - with dignity and class.

I understand your point. But please understand mine as well--when you're raised right, the things you learn are to treat your fellow man with respect and courtesy. You say "yes sir, no sir; yes ma'am, no ma'am." You go to church on Sunday, respect your elders, go to school and try to make good grades.

I did not intend to disrespect any fans of Alabama who didn't go there, and for any offense taken, I apologize.

Every school has its idiots, but for the most part, I was treated with nothing but class this weekend...

You had a few of the students after the game giving the typical, "Go to Hell, FU Rocky Top, Hope you cry orange tears all the way home etc,"

However, 99% of the fans were great...A group of students and fans kept buying me shots of Jager on Friday night at Buffalo Phils while we talked football

And, at the game, when Corey Anderson fumbled that ball, my legs just went out from under me, and I just sat there with my head in my hands...After y'all kicked the field goal, I was getting ready to head out...The Bama fans behind me helped me up and told me it was a great game, and we had nothing to be ashamed of...Very classy move

Could you get over fans being mean to a hated rival? Seriously, the whole, let's be nice to everyone gig is getting played out. If someone is mean, so what, it's not you, they have their way of being a fan and so do you. If UT goes and says we have classless fans, do you honestly care? Maybe the guys were out of line, but who really cares? It's football, not the quiz bowl. If you feel they were representing the whole school, you're wrong. I would think UT fans are smart enough to know everyone has their batch of bad apples, and I'm sure they know not all the fans attend the school.

I don't think we should bash teams like Utah St., but its UT. 9-10, no home win since 91. The list goes on. When emotions are so high, things happen. I just don't get why, it is Bama's responsibility to be ultra-nice to everyone who visits. When I go to an away game I expect to be harassed, don't you?
