The best part about CNS influencing so many coaches is that it increases the pool to draw from for his successor.

That's the only thing that makes sense to me. If he really wants a decent HC job, all he has to do is wait until after the bowl games. The coaching carousel will take it's toll in January, and some really decent HC jobs will become available.
True. And wanting to coach "out west" is kinda misleading, too. Being from Montana I imagine he's ambivalent about where he's at. I am happy for him that he's getting the attention and success he is.

Re: Jim McElwain interviews with San Jose State

You cannot blame him if he leaves now. That's what all coaches who move to new jobs do (Kelly, Strong, etc). The new school want them to start recruiting immediately and who could blame them. I certainly don't, even if he is playing for the Natl Championship...
I can blame him and will blame him. And he should blame himself if he does. He needs to finish. He may never have the chance to compete for an NC again. For the offensive coordinator to leave before the most important game of his team's life...is devasting. What would bring in more recruits, an extra month, or having the credential of being the former offensive coordinator of the national champions?

What he said.

That is, without all the blaming talk.

If he were to leave before the NC game, would be get the ring, and could he put the NC on his resume? Kelly left Cincinnati because there was no NC ring for coaching the Sugar Bowl.

We are like the crews of the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria, and it seems like this guy may be thinking of jumping off the boat when land is in sight.

"Hey, McElwain, sit down and don't rock the boat."

"You've done a good job. Almost helped win a national championship."

"Oh yeah. Finish."

As an example, recall that in 1998 David Cutcliffe (OC) left TN for Ole Miss before the national championship game, and everything turned out alright for TN in the end. I think we'll be okay if CJM ends up taking another job before the BCSCG.

Re: Jim McElwain interviews with San Jose State

Blame wasn't really the right word. I will think that he is in some part responsible if we lose. If he leaves it could mess with the focus of our players. For McElwain to leave before the National Championship game just would not make sense to me, from his standpoint. You've been with the team all year, they are used to your offensive schemes and not that you've done all that work, all that blood and sweat you are finally at the ultimate game in college football and...you bail. Its like climbing Everest and right before you reach the peak, you say, "you know what, K2 looks nice today I think I'll go climb it." It doesn't make sense for Jim. His players only have a month to prepare, and we will need a strong offensive plan for a victory. We want to be fair to our coaches, but also to our players. Any time a coach makes a major decision, he has to ask himself how its going to affect his players. And this could really affect the players.

Having said this however I don't think that he will leave before the game. I think he'll finish this.

no one should think ill of coach mac. this is the perfect time, coach saban has given the team off until dec 19. why cant one of the coaches interview for a head coaching job? after all, this is the ultimate step coordinator to head coach. coach saban has already stated that it is a natural progression. it will not interfere with the team, they know exactly what the deal is. now if a head coach, is interviewing before a bowl it is a distraction, especially like kelly you announce before the game. i really dont know why anyone would want the san jose job though, unless you really miss the west coast. that is a dead end head coaching position, in my opinion. if he takes the job, good luck, he has been good for alabama.

I see it the way CNS sees it if a coach can upgrade then go for it. Now SJS might not be an upgrade in school but to be a head coach is every co-ordinators dream.. I think no matter what he would stay and coach the game unlike that sorry excuse that went to notre damn......... I USED to like kelly now I hope he falls further than xCCW fell that was just too franphony like...........

I don't think I can be mad at McElwain no matter how this works out, since you can't fault him for wanting a head coach job...

Having said that, I don't think he has the same justification Brian Kelly had with taking the ND job immediately or Mullen had (it was a SEC job after all). I'd like to think any agreement he might have make would allow him to fulfill his role for the NC game. If he doesn't do that I will think less because I don't think San Jose St. is one of those drop everything type of jobs. Even relative to San Jose St. I'd think he'd be able to recruit better having coached Alabama for the NC game because saying his offense won a NC probably would go farther than showing up there earlier.

IF he actually interviews and IF they hire him, he MAY stay on at Bama until Jan 8. Charlie Strong will coach in the Sugar Bowl with Florida. I'm also pretty sure Bo Pelini coached with LSU in the BCS game before departing to Nebraska.

A better hire for San Jose St. IMO if they can get him is the current HC at Montana.
Slightly off-topic...
I'm loving this Montana vs. Appy St game...nothing like watching football games in the snow! And its snowing but good in this one. Currently tied at 17 Appy St driving.

Me, too. Missed FG, Montana gets the ball with 4 minutes to go. Winner goes to the championship game...
