Coach Saban is not a very nice guy.

I was just a teenager when Bama was in our Hayday, but I was fortunate enough to have met Coach Bryant a few different times. Both were in very public settings and he was extremely nice. I met him the first time when I was maybe 12 or 13 and he was at Pizitz in Birmingham and he signed a small piece of paper for me and a friend. My friend still has his and we're both 45 now! I have no idea where mine is and haven't for a number of years. I've got several other signed items but they were gifts and not items I had signed.

I also have several friends who played for Coach Bryant (mainly in the mid and late 70's) and I can also tell you that most feared him. He did have "special" relationships with some of his players but not many had the courage to just walk up and start chatting with him. I remember watching practice once when I was maybe 15 or 16 and he was up on his tower screaming with a bull horn. Nobody liked it when Coach screamed because it was NEVER a good thing...OR SO I'VE BEEN TOLD!
 
When Saban made the statement that FB games weren't played in a sandbox, when asked why he didn't use the sandbox training technique, some wag said he hadn't seen Bryant-Denny during the FB season. Everybody laughed but Saban...

I just got a mental picture of what his face must've looked like when this happened. I bet those guys stopped laughing real fast!!!!!! :biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin:
 
I'm really tired of people thinking that CNS has to be nice to everyone in the media. He was not hired to be the head PR guy. He was hired to teach a bunch of guys how to play the greatest game on earth ( college football ). IMHO if he's having to go around and talk to the media all of the time then that takes time away from doing what he was hired to do.

I'm glad he's a hard nosed coach and wants things done his way. I think we've found out by way of the DuBose and Shula era's that one person must be in charge and anyone not on the same page must get on the same page or look for employment elsewhere.:cool2:

The neutral attire was a strong request, if not a requirement. However, I was disappointed to see an older couple fully togged-out in crimson in the Presidential boxes.* Remember that I'm a lawyer who handles estates and many doctors in Huntsville have UT degrees - more in former days than now. I was a guest largely because I'd had a client, who was a UT grad, who'd just left several million to UT...

*Oh, I also ran into Andy Sorensen and wife there. He looked to be having a good time, until he saw me, at which time he appeared to become sick at his stomach...

When I was a media freak , I never wore anything other than neutral as well . :frown:
 
I'm surprised at how genuine the smile looks. This was the final spasm of the Dubacle. My host, the VP for Development, now retired, wasn't really even a FB fan. He used to say that he liked to see the UT fans squirm and make excuses about losses. About half-way through the game, he turned to me and said that he couldn't see why any real Vol fan would be worried. And he was right. About the only other thing of note I remember was the Kellogg heir, about ninety, who donated several hundred thousand a month, taking a tumble down the steps and bouncing off the plate glass. I didn't know that glass that thick could bend but not break. My BIL the rocket scientist (former director of KSFC) told me that the stress risers were such that the glass must have been just a whisker short of splintering. I started making up headlines in my head. "Cereal heir snaps, crackles and pops through the President's box glass at Neyland and lands in a crowded bowl devoid of milk...."
