Not long ago Saban made a comment (paraphrasing) along the lines of “if choosing between an NFL job or college job with college athletics in its present state, why would someone choose to coach in college?” His point being that kids are no longer motivated to work towards improvement and getting to the next level to “maximize their value”. The vast majority are only concerned with getting what they can get now. And if someone offers them more, they walk out in a heartbeat, hit the portal and transfer. At least in the NFL you know who have coming back based on their contract. In college you may need to replace 70% or more of your roster each year. Who wants that?
If CNS truly believes that and we know it had impact on his decision to retire almost two years ago, why would he want to jump back in it? It certainly hasn’t gotten better over the past two years.

I think Fisher is definitely the name to watch for Auburn. He would be a very “Auburn” hire and is more attainable for them than ever before. They coveted him in prior coaching searches, particularly when Chizik was fired. Frankly, I think they could do worse. He’d likely keep Durkin as DC considering they worked together during his final season at aTm, and I’d be willing to bet he’d bring in Petrino as OC (again, same arrangement as his final season at aTm and given how Petrino’s interim gig at Arkansas has played out I’d say there’s a 0% chance of him getting a HC job). This combination would recruit fairly well and would put at least a competent offense and formidable defense on the field. I’ll be surprised if they don’t go this route - particularly if the old power brokers down there have a say in things.

Otherwise, I think they’ll go hard after Sumrall given he’s an Alabama native and his tenure down the road at Troy.

Auburn: Jimbo Fisher
Penn State: Mike Elko
Virginia Tech: James Franklin
UCLA: Brian Kelly
Arkansas: Jeff Traylor
LSU: Jon Sumrall
Florida: Ryan Silverfield
Texas A&M (assuming Elko leaves): Joey McGuire
 
LSU interim AD Verge Ausberry:

I wonder if anyone will take a chance on pat Fitzgerald this go around. ESPN has an article up on he was ‘vindicated’ after his wrongful termination settlement

All I know is that Fisher would be a home run hire for the barn. Dude is making millions sitting on his duff and not really sure he would take the gig as dysfunctional as it is.

There is little question in talking to those around the program that Sumrall is the guy they want. Question is “Does Jon Sumrall want them?”

I got the feeling, as things continue to play out, Sumrall is going to have his pick from several different opportunities.

Interesting that Wisconsin announced that Fickel will be retained as Head Coach for next season. Probably a pretty wise move. I think they looked at the landscape and said “If we get rid of Fickel, who can we realistically get?”
