Coaching Prospects - Making a List

Someone mentioned here about Cowher retiring. It seems like I remember hearing something to that effect on SportsCenter earlier in the year and they made mention that he might like to try college coaching. I am not sure if he would be a good fit for our situation but I dont think anyone can argue that there would not be a toughness instilled in our players.

If you want consider prospects out of the pro ranks, I would offer Jeff Fisher as interesting prospect. It looks like he might be available in a few weeks and based on what I have witnessed for the past several years that he has that right balance in media appeal and coaching ability and motivational skill - overall would be a good representative of the university. You may even be able to pull Norm Chow with him.

I will say I sure don't want another assistant coach in here. If we can't hire a good one, better stay with what we got and maybe CMS will make e few changes in his staff. I don't want to let Shula go without someone better coming in.....take a step forward only to take two steps back..

If I'm not mistaken, his family live in NC. Would have been a good candidate for that job, but Butch Davis got it instead.

There are two guys that I would love to see on our sideline. One is Paul Johnson and the other is Mike Stoops.

How about Bill Cowher doesn't look like he wants to coach Pittsberg next season maybe he's ready for something new wouldn't hurt to offer or maybe John Gruden.

I would hope they would make sure any NFL candidates knew that they would need to change some things, especially as it relates to discipline, motivation, mentoring players, etc...

I would hope they would tread lightly if going after an NFL guy...

...If a change is made, I would probably rather see a guy whose had previous college experience in building programs from the bottom up, IMHO...

...RTR...no matter who's in there though...

What about the Boise State coach? He is wide open and if we paint our field crimson instead of the blue one he is used to...who knows?

The Boise State head coach just finished his first season as a head coach. You're probably referring to Dan Hawkins, who was at Boise Stata and is now at Colorado. He would be a good choice, but since he has only been at Colorado one year, it is very unlikely he would make a move.

He does have a house in NC and is an NC State graduate, played linebacker for the wolfpack. His name floats around with the possible Chuck Amato firing

This guy should be at Bama:

http://navysports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/johnson_paul00.html

"Prior to joining the Navy staff, Johnson spent eight seasons as the offensive coordinator at the University of Hawai'i (1987-94). He helped guide the Rainbows to their first Western Athletic Conference title and their first bowl appearance coordinating an explosive offense that broke or equaled over 160 school records.

While at Hawaii, Johnson developed a successful offensive unit which earned top-20 I-A statistical rankings in scoring offense, total offense and rushing offense during six of his eight seasons. He earned Top Offensive Coach honors in the WAC and was named one of the top 10 assistant coaches in the country by The Sporting News."

Of Note: Johnson ran a spread offense in 1995-96 while offensive coordinator at Navy:

"Johnson was Navy's offensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996 and his spread offense made an immediate impact, breaking five school records during the Mids' five-win season in 1995, equaling the most wins by a Navy team since 1990.

Navy came back in year two under Johnson and exploded, posting a 9-3 record, including a 42-38 victory over California in the Aloha Bowl. It was Navy's first winning season since 1982 and one of only two winning seasons the Mids have had in the last-19 years (the other being in 1997 when Navy went 7-4 running the spread offense under the direction of Johnson protégé Ken Niumatalolo). Navy's appearance in the Aloha Bowl was the Mids' first bowl appearance since 1981 and just their ninth bowl appearance in school history. Navy finished the '96 season ranked fifth nationally in rushing offense (283.6 yards per game), 31st in total offense (407.7 yards per game) and 22nd in scoring offense (31.8 points per game). Quarterback Chris McCoy rushed for 1,228 yards and a school-record 16 rushing touchdowns, while fullback Omar Nelson rushed for 857 yards. Though Johnson left for Georgia Southern after the 1996 season, his offense remained in tact for two more years, as McCoy became just the 10th quarterback in NCAA history to rush and pass for 1,000 yards in a season in 1997. McCoy had 20 rushing touchdowns in '97, an NCAA record for quarterbacks."

I'm glad to see Johnson is getting a little support on the board. I think he's currently got a more challenging job than winning at UA (competing at Navy). At Alabama players and fans expect to win. At the academies people know it would be nice to win but understand that academic/military standards seriously impede any chance of getting to a level competitive field talent wise. Two other names I think deserve serious consideration are: Gary Patterson and Jeff Bower from USM. Not sure if Bower would be willing to leave after 16 years but both of these men play a brand of football that we're used to at UA.

My .02...

Assuming Shula stays:

1. Fire the OC/QB, OL coach, WR coach, DE coach, DL coach and special teams/TE coach.
2. Hire the following replacements:

1. OL/TE Coach - Mac McWhorter
2. OC/QB - Jimbo Fisher
3. WR - Dabo Sweeny
4. DL/DE - Earl Lane (DL coach@LSU)
5. ST - Joe DeForest (Oklahoma State)

Lane and Deforest are supposed to be excellent recruiters... Shula is a good recruiter. I know it would take $$$ to get Fisher and McWhorter. However, if our AD, Pres and BOT are serious about the program money should not matter.

If Shula goes:

Tefford from Cal would be my 1st choice. Especially if he could lure Norm Chow as OC/QB coach. I would hope the new coach would keep Kines, Ball, and Sparky as assistants and go after McWhorter and DeForest. Allow the new HC to bring in his choice for WR/DE/DL/TE.

Again, Chow, McWhorter and Tefford would not be cheap. However, we are Alabama!!!!

My list:

1. Nick Saban (unrealistic, but geez how much more physical would we be)

2. Gary Patterson (good coach, and would kind of be entertaining to see TCU's fans go crazy after we hired another one)

3. Paul Johnson (nobody does more with less)

4. Jim Grobe (except maybe this guy)

5. Sarah Patterson (how much worse could she be?)

6. Jimmy Johnson (just making sure you were paying attention)

Musing on AD Position if no changes made & next year is a repeat

This is the guy many Dog fans wish were the AD at UGA. He is the guy behind the gifts that make UGA the most profitable Athletic department in the country.

He is also the guy who gave Chris Hatcher a scholarship and then his first coaching job and then was instrumental in Hatcher getting the job at Valdosta State.

I'm sorry, I couldn't make it any further. The spewing of soda through my nose hurts too bad!

BTW; Nick Saban + Rush Probst + CJK = An Egotistical football program who lands itself the Death Penalty, although they have a clean defense.

Jimbo Fisher's wife would love to be closer to home (Piedmont girl).
if he is really thinking about getting out at LSU and could get her as close to home as T-town (2 hour drive),
the only thing that could get him to leave is a head coaching job,
which he will probably get a shot at one day.

I know i will get flamed. I don't see the greatness in our Defense that others see. I think keeping Joe kines is wrong. I want a pressure\Blitz defense not a react defense like we have had the last 3 years. I can't feel good consistantly on each series thinking that we will stop the other team.

My ultimate reason is that we all know that Brandon cox if he gets rattled by pressure and sacking him. He will screw up and turn it over. For the most part we did not do that. Sure we did sack him twice. We seemed way out of place. When you have a 3 man line on a possible run then you drop your linebackers giving them 6 yards to run before the Linebacker gets them. There is something obviously wrong with the scheme.
