Concerning Diego Pavia( AKA Johnny Manzel II IMHO ), Is a Dedicated Spy Worth The Potential Reward Vs. The Risk?

If the team can't control the ball and dominate Vandy after being embarrassed in Nashville last year then it would seem that there are a lot of challenges ahead this season.
large extent to jimmie and joe matching Woemack's defense

I am not convinced about DC

No matter how much better we are at the QB position this year than last, the offense really wasn't the problem against Vandy last year.

The defense completely blew it in that game.
The defense screwed the pooch for sure, but the O was not good either.

INT returned for a TD.

Fumble on a short field that led to a TD.

take just one away and we probably squeak out a win.

Aside from those, the bigger, broader problem the 24 team had was that we lived and died on the big play. The longest, most time consuming drive we had was 3:41 and 7 plays and we had multiple drives that were 3-4 plays and out with zero consistency. Vandy more than DOUBLED our time of possession. Our offense had ZERO ability to hold the ball to play keep away from a hot offense.

If we hold the ball longer and start to flip TOP, on just 1 or 2 drives, we have a much better chance by maybe limiting one possession, and the D doesn't get gassed by having to play over 42 minutes of a 60 minute game.

Contrast that with this season against UGA and we had two 14 play drives that each consumed over 6:30 and we didn't have to punt until the end of the 3rd quarter on our only drive that was 3/out. We only had one other drive under 2 minutes, and that's when we were in hurry up leading to the score before half.

Or if the defense could have stopped anything.

The turnovers were bad...but we scored 35.

No way we should lose to a 4 foot tall QB running the option for Vandy if we score 35 points.

Milroe was terrible...the defense was "terribler".
well, when the offense gives the opponent 14 points, like they did last year, my math says the Defense allowed less points than the offense scored.

I don't think motivation/taking Vandy for granted will be an issue.
What I want to see is Kane Wommack put together a game plan that allows us to contain on the edges. I want to see keeping gap integrity. I want to see us HIT Pavia early and often and HARD.
Wommack is Wommack. He runs a Sun Belt D and that won't change. Unless DeBoer forces changes....he won't.....we have the D that we have.

Vandy may rush for 300 yards and throw for 150. But if we can get up early on them, have intensity and focus and not play with our food, we should force them into some bad outcomes.

Forcing a turnover or two would be helpful too.

Threadjack alert... From upthread...

Man... the drive chart for Ole Miss in 2020 is insane. We lost a fumble at the 1 and had one punt on their 40... The other 9 drives were TDs... I really couldn't believe it when Lane blinked twice and kicked FGs... He probably should have gone for it.

Our yardage efficiency (the percentage of the max number of yards we could get) was 95% which is insane.

I think the best defense next Saturday will be our offense. Long scoring drives eating up the clock and forcing the pressure on Vandy.
Spidey, you have some of the same thoughts as I have.
We WILL NOT overlook Vandy. We WILL NOT be surprised in that Vandy has a good team.
Add to that, the defense has something to prove and a big chip on its shoulder due to last year's fiasco.
I hope Wommack is up to the task.
If we play ball control I think we win.
Now to really answer the question. I don't think a spy is a great idea all game long but situationally and periodically it could keep Mr. Career College off schedule a bit and guessing some.
The biggest thing that needs to happen in this game is to hit him HARD and often.
Agree, and said as much in another thread, with the very first sentence. Hard for anybody to hurt you if they can’t get on the field. Because of our history and current injury situation, I’m doubtful that we can stop Vandy’s offense on a consistent basis. One of those things you would love to be wrong about!

I can't believe we have this thread about VANDERBILT! Who would have ever thought that 5 years ago. Vandy a threat.

The world as I knew it is gone.
Try this one on for size. Been watching Alabama football since ‘58. NEVER, until now!
Yes, and if anyone needed anything else for proof that the game is totally different than 5 years ago……

Late 70s for me. They've always been a punchline. It's bizarro world.

I do think Bama can get a couple of stops, but I do not think they can stop Bama. This game is not so much about Pavia as it is their defense. Very similar to 2013 TAMU game. It will be close. They'll make a run at it. I see it being a 38-27 type game.

I believe we are going to have to outscore them. Pavia, good offensive line and WR's. Missing Russaw plus Smith for the 1st half is going to be tough to stop them. However, we have an offense that can outscore them.

On Defense, since we can't/don't pressure the QB, we need to concentrate on the "mush rush" and keep Pavia in the pocket. Make him beat us with his arm (I remember the 4th TD pass...but...) he's most dangerous outside the pocket.

On offense...just be us, but this might be the game we see our rushing game come to life. Take some shots at quick 6s, but dominate ball possession time and run them out of BDS@NSF

A running game would be GREAT , and maybe decisive. If the D could just get a couple of stops….

I have to chuckle thinking back a couple of years ago coming back from a dove hunt and listening to New Mexico St. and Pavia beat Auburn. I distinctly remember saying to myself, “ Damn! I’m glad we don’t have to play THAT guy! “.

No kidding... We were watching that game with glee. And then we ate our hats.

It's either a sign of the apocalypse, or just an indication of the state of college football in the transfer portal/NIL/six year eligibility era that, the week after a win at Athens, a home game against Vanderbilt has become a measuring stick of any kind for an Alabama football season...
I think it’s the latter……at least I hope so. That’s why I call it “ college “ football.
