Concerning Diego Pavia( AKA Johnny Manzel II IMHO ), Is a Dedicated Spy Worth The Potential Reward Vs. The Risk?

It’s not the d scheme as in 4-2-5 it’s how he implements it and runs it. He does not do the best job so far (was going to say poor job but willing to give time) and often is out adjusted during games. The fact he lets his d get out leveraged/flanked pre snap is a sign of poor coaching at any level. Add in his actual position coaching has been poor then it gets worse. His play calling and tendencies were so limited and predictable last year teams knew exactly what was coming and even opponents said so. Has that been better this year, yes so far. He did well with running more zone against uga vs cover 1 and it worked but again he let his guys get out leveraged pre snap and more often than he should does not put the players in the best position to succeed. His pressures definitely leave a lot more to be desired.

With that said, Sabb has not helped himself either year as far as reading and reacting and made d look bad at times and other d last year as well and that seems mostly better this year so far. D line coaching is not helping either along with just not recruiting well there for years. The edge rushers on paper should be better but hard to judge other than they haven’t produced under him. Injuries stacking up this year don’t help. He is not a bad DC but is avg to decent but he is not the level that Bama has mostly had in a lifetime. Under CKD we might have to just adjust as a base mentally and know we might not have an elite DC here under CKD. Would I like a different DC yes, will he be decent enough to win a championship? I don’t think so unless it’s a 2020 type of offense.
Yep - all this. Most of CFB runs a 4-2 variant now. Saban ran it over 80% of the time. You're 100% right in that it's how he leverages the players within the 4-2 that is the real issue.

that said, he spend a lot of time in a hybrid 3-3 look with the wolf off ball, with a very shallow drop lined up inside the DLs, who then still seem to line up somewhat narrow. This one totally befuddles me as we're very, very easily outleveraged, and the wolf isn't far enough off ball to be able to react and get into gaps other than where he's already aligned. he typically will get easily caught in the wash no matter what player we have in at that spot. It's not 100%, but pretty close that we give up big plays out of this alignment.

Well, I agree with TnR. he-who-won't-be-named (HWWBN) was horrible and this game is the perfect illustration of why. The best analogy I can think of is he is a baseball player who either hits a home run on the first pitch, or strikes out in 3. Almost half our drives against Vandy were 3 or 4 plays and out. We possessed the ball for less than 20 minutes. Even our scoring drives were extremely short with (I think) only one over 3:30, because of the over reliance on the big play. It was a huge weight dragging down the team the entire year.

The INT! that was 100% on HWWBN.

Why?
1). he stared the receiver down the entire time.
2). He was late, and off schedule with the ball.

Those two things led the defender to the spot, and gave him lots of time to make up the ground to get there. To be successful on that route, the ball must arrive right as the WR stops and turns in the break so the defender can't get there. That did not happen on this throw and it wasn't even close. Some of us had been calling out HWWBN late delivery even just watching practices throwing against air, and had predicted that late delivery would result in interceptions, and low and behold here is proof.

so yeah, the offense scored 35, but he gave 14 back. The D only allowed 26 really - still too many, but given they go no time to regroup due to the O misfiring so often, not totally surprising. Even if you put the TD from the fumble on the D, we win without the horrendous throw and pick 6.
You forgot that he was tipping the play call with his stance....

I admit it, this guy scares the bejesus out of me.
It's not the run game I'm concerned with. Last year we lost because of self inflicted penalties, turnovers that was not necessary. We had a QB that can't adjust st LOS.

This is different team this year. So to defend him... Put four guys up front mix up coverage. Confuse him with blitzes. Control gaps but Keepngoing after him. Make him uncomfortable.

Will Johnny Manziel be the celebrity guest picker on Gamed
There are too many things to say to say them all, so that's all I've got to say about that...
I like reading you and Coah D’s comments on the nuts and bolts of the game. I like the ins and outs myself. Regarding the QB, its truly satisfying to see the little things 15 does to manipulate a defense. Especially when they have close up shots of his eyes looking off safeties and linebackers then coming back to his intended target. Moving guys around presnap to see how the defense reacts, I. think some what he does would only come out in game situations, which may have contributed to a physical freak winning the job over him for 2 years . The coaches kid moniker truly applies to Ty!

many thanks. Totally agree on your take on all the little things TS does. Just the fact that within a few games of being a starter that it seems like he's being given a huge amount of responsibility at the LOS to make adjustments and call changes is pretty fun to watch and something we haven't had at all for the last couple of seasons.

As for HWWBN 'winning' the job, as TnR mentioned there was a lot of shenanigans going on behind the curtain that had absolutely nothing to do with ability or who could run an offense the best. Absolutely nothing...

It's not the QB that cost the team the game though, that's important to keep in mind because Simpson can have a good game and Alabama can still lose if the other stuff still goes wrong. If Alabama scores 35 points you'd expect them to beat Vanderbilt.

Just to review a few things.
Alabama actually averaged more per pass and more per rush than Vanderbilt. Alabama had 394 total yards and Vanderbilt had 418.

So what killed Alabama? Time of possession and Vanderbilt's third down efficiency. Vanderbilt had the ball 42 minutes to Alabama's 18. Vanderbilt converted 12 third downs! Some third down stops, that game is over. Even with that, the coaching blunder on a punt resulted in a Vanderbilt touchdown and decided the game.

It's a bit too easy to just say yeah Milroe's fault, but if Alabama makes the same type of mistakes it made last year again, you can't expect Simpson to bail the team out.

I’ve always believed that to beat a good quarterback that is is looking for certain formations from the defense that they saw on film is to change the look. I’d like to see Pavia come out of the offensive huddle and see something entirely different.

I always hear this, and i don't doubt that in this new era of NIL that there is a lot more going on behind the curtain that we don't know about. But i REALLY want to hear from someone who has internal knowledge what the situation was, bc there were way too many times last year that most coaches would have at least TRIED a different QB, even if it was only for a drive or two to get his starter a chance to re-compose themself. That was never the case last year and i can't for the life of me figure out why. I've heard the rumors since the disastrous USF game in Saban's last year, but last year was a true mystery.

DeBoer simply rode that first year out until the cancer was gone...plain and simple. 😎
