Whats up guys? First post. I must start by saying I am a huge UT fan. I also want to say congratulations on the new head coach. I am sure CNS will have you guys headed back up almost immediately. As you all know we have not had seasons to write home about here at UT lately. I have a couple of questions for the tide faithful. 1) How do you guys expect your expected climb back to the upper echelon to be (a couple of years or say several years? 2) How do you view this years match up between us to go?

This is how I see it. I will answer both of my own questions with my own opinion. 1) I see you guys making strides this year and finally reaching the NC talk in say 3-4 years and possibly being a real threat to win one in that time as well. 2) I see UT possibly winning our match up this year. Of course this is my opinion and others will vary. I do see UT struggling to keep up in the future without some major changes. Changes that might include a coaching change or a major shift in coaching philosophy. Talent is not a problem, so that leads me to believe we have to change something else. Preparation, Game planning, or possibly coaches.

I look forward to everyones thoughts. Congratulations once again.

Re: Congratulations

I won't try to answer all those just now :)D), but rival fans out for a serious discussion are always welcome...

I would say that discipline seems to have been the problem with UT. Perhaps Fulmer should make sure that all of his recruits are more than just good athletes.

Good luck except when we meet this year. We might lose, but don't expect anything but a nasty fight.

Re: Congratulations

I agree with Numbersman on the discipline issue.

Confirmed by painful recent experience in Tuscaloosa, discipline in one area begets discipline in others. Likewise, a lack of discipline in one area usually bleeds over into shortcomings and shortcuts elsewhere.

It's highly unusual to find an individual who has a disciplined approach to one area of life (academics, work, the weightroom, the law, morals, whatever) but not the others. Discipline is just not something you can turn off and on like a faucet. It's an approach, not just to sports or to college, but to life in general.

No doubt UT has talent. If the team as a whole gets overall discipline back (and I'm not at all sure that's possible with current leadership), they'll be formidable. If not, look for more underachieving.

Re: Congratulations

#1Vols, I do mostly agree with your predictions. It will take a few years for Saban to get the Tide back into the big race. And I do agree UT will have the upper hand over Bama this year, but I do expect that to quickly change due to the UT discipline issues mentioned by other posters. I think Fulmer has gotten way to complacent to get UT back into the NC race. Good first post, especially for a rival. Welcome to Tidefans!!

Re: Congratulations

Welcome to Tidefans.. if you can withstand some talk about Fulmer here then you'll be fine and will also see that we are all pretty civil and thoughtful about what is posted and discussed. I really enjoy the boards here - check out Recruiting and Grillin and Chillin, two of my favorite. Again, welcome.

Re: Congratulations

My thoughts on how we match up this year -

UT's advantage -

Their running game against our front seven. Ya'll have a stable there is no denying that, and your O-line should be hungry after underachieving last year.

UT's disadvantage -

Inexperienced receivers matching up against our secondary
which is consistently rated as one of the nation's best

Bama's advantage -

Playing the game at home, and we should be able to move
the ball through the air (Hefney's a stud, but he can't cover everybody)

Bama's disadvantage -

Can Bama be physical enough on both sides of the LOS? At this point UT has the best talent at those respective units, but who will play with the most heart? That's usually what wins this game..

Re: Congratulations

Welcome to the site I think you'll find we have a small but good group of rival fans that really contribute here with an outside perspective. As far as your questions go I think it'll be more like 5-6 years before we can compete every year but hope to be in the SECCG in 3-4 yrs (guarded optimism). Hard to say on the UT game this year. I know they had a taleneted recruiting class in 2005 and Ainge returning but lately with UT talent hasn't been the issue (see 2005 when the same team that beat LSU in Baton Rouge had a losing record). I think the Cal game will be a good indication for how your season will go.

Re: Congratulations

Welcome to the board.

I think we take UT in T-Town this season. Even in the Shula years UT has had problems putting us away. The games have been close and decided in the last quarter. We were in position to win with a team that was badly coached and badly out of shape. So the obvious question is if we were able to take UT to the wire with those circumstances what will it be like when we've actually got a coach that can coach and a team that is in shape?

My answer is 28-17 Alabama. ROLL TIDE!!!

Again, welcome to the board.

Re: Congratulations

Welcome to tidefans. I think you hit the nail on the head on NC contention in 3 or 4 years. as far as the game this year I really think it could go either way depending on who wants it the most, who gets the breaks on fumbles and interceptions and who doesn't get killed with penalties.

Re: Congratulations

Welcome to the forum, it's refreshing to have someone come to talk football instead of stirring the pot.

I think Coach Saban will have us seriously in the mix for the SECW in two years and I fully expect us to be quite a handful for anyone after that, assuming that we stay relatively healthy.

I think this season's BAMA/UT game to be a toss-up. Y'all have an advantage in experience and depth, but I think we have an advantage in coaching. By the time we play, we should be rounding into shape with the coaching changes and playing with a sense of confidence.

Welcome to the board. I had a neighbor that went to UT. I think Bama will play Tennessee close and it will come down to the 4th qtr. Hopefully Bama will be conditioned enough to just win this one at home.

I see alot of you view our troubles being discipline related. I guess I will have to agree for the most part. I dont see Phil changing too much in that area. I also believe that most programs around the country suffer this same fault. Some get more press than others. Of course any SEC team will get press over troubled players. IMO this is just the rest of the nation trying to beat down college football's superior conference. I think we can all agree that the SEC reigns supreme in college football. With UT's recent success in basketball, along with the rest of the conference (especially UF's recent NCs and UK having a new coach) we (meaning the SEC) will soon possibly take the basketball world by it cajones too. Back to football. I have heard rumblings around other sites that say your QB JPW will not pan out the way he is being touted. What are your thoughts or concerns there?

This is not a snap answer to your question. JPW is the real deal and I think it will be shown big time this season.

I have not heard those rumblings myself. But take a look at what he did last season as a first year starter and on a bad offense. 2,700 yards passing 17 TD's and 10 Int's. I think he only improves on those numbers with more experience and a great coaching staff behind him. By the time he leaves he will own every Alabama passing record on the books.

Dont worry, I dont take it as a snap answer. I usually respond short and sweet at the UT site I frequent. I am posting unusually long here to try to make my entrance as smooth as possible. I dont want to rock the boat, so to speak. Well maybe just a little. I have not seen JPW play much. Some people say he is good while others say he is not good. I dont know. I just wanted yall's opinion.

As I mentioned in another thread, I have a friend who just returned from working the camp at Bama, and he's impressed out of his mind* with the progress JPW has made (and he's not that easy to impress). Our 2nd guy is still working on timing routes, but that'll come eventually.

He was particularly impressed with JPW's timing routes. He said the ball would flash out there and he'd think "Where the hell is he throwing?" but, when the ball got there, the receiver would arrive perfectly on time. This was in 7 on 7 skels...
