Courtney Upshaw - Flash in the pan or dominant pass rusher?

I'm interested to see my fellow Tide fans' opinions on Upshaw. We all saw how dominant he was in both the Florida and Auburn games yet he hasn't been able to do this consistently (obviously his injury this year played some part in that.)

I don't think he gets the credit he deserves from our fanbase. I'm really expecting a huge season from him next year.

I think he can be dominant. He surely showed just how good he was in those two games. We also seemed to be doing a lot of stunting on the defensive line during those two games, which I think really helps him. I expect a big year out of him next year as well. The d-line improving will do nothing but help him.

Courtney was very solid as a sophomore and dominant this year when healthy, which wasn't often. Our D was immensely better when he was full speed. He's hardly a flash in the pan and has been mentioned as an early entry possibility, though not likely

I can't lie, I was bit disappointed because I was expecting a big year from him. But as already mentioned he had some issues holding him back. I'm hoping for a monster year next year.

He has all the physical tools to be a dominant pass rusher. Lets face it, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to be an effective pass rushing DE. The problem is that JLB carries many additional responsibilities. And if your thinking instead of playing, it slows down everything, just look at Hightower when he was trying to learn the MLB position this year. I think Upshaw will be even better as a true 43 DE, which is what I think he ends up playing if he makes it to the next level. That said, Upshaw will be a beast next year if he can stay healthy. Truth is, I'm far more disappointed in Stinson's development as a Jack than Upshaw's.

FWIW, Upshaw had a pretty severe high ankle sprain that he tried to play through a lot. And without proper time to heal, it really never gets better.

But at 100%, he's a beast.

I've been an Upshaw fan since he was a freshman. He came in as part of that awesome 2008 class and represented the type of in-state athlete that we had not been getting: Big, fast, athletic defenders. Now, he seams to really be reaching his potential. Not only as a push rusher but an all-around 4-down JLB. He could be key to next year's defense.

After such an up and down year (due to injuries) I'm sure CU is expecting a lot from himself next year!

And I agree that he could be one of the keys to next year's defensive improvement!

Agree - when healthy ... dominant. I believe that you will see this in bowl game from CU and others. There will be a lot of NFL eyes on this game.

Do you think anything will be made public post bowl game as to what people were dealing with? Or does that fall under the HIPPO law?

A lot of our problems this year have been owing to injuries which haven't been publicized...

Re: Courtney Upshaw

Probably a good decision, one that will make him a lot of money if he can stay healthy next year and have the kind of year he's so capable of.
