Those cowbells ARE annoying, and really hazardous to the ears. Couldn't the SEC, or the powers that be, make MSU forfeit a game or something to enforce their rules against such until the fans learn to leave the cowbells at home? My husband and I are UA season ticket holders and never miss a home game and quite often travel to away games. Even though we live only 23 miles from Starkville we do not travel there because the cowbells are so distracting, kinda like that sweet baby that cries during the whole church service. Just curious if the powers that be could really enforce their own rules and regs, and if not, why.

The cowbells are considered by MSU fans as natural noise makers, not artificial as they make the same sound they were designed to make. Be careful what you ask for because the conference could ask us to stop Ramma Jamma due to sportsmanship

Um ... is that actually true? I mean, couldn't you then say that air horns are OK because they were designed to make that sound?

I plead total ignorance on the rules, but if artificial noisemakers are banned (aren't they?), then would the refs be able to penalize the team 15 yards or something? After a few of those, I imagine the problem would start to be resolved.

If they're ringing those damned bells, they aren't hollering. And if they aren't hollering, they really aren't being as loud as they could be.

MSU fans may not be the smartest people in the world, but I'm pretty sure they can shake a cowbell and yell at the same time. Flimsy argumentation.

Fact is, they have an unfair advantage, and if they continue to get away with it, what's keeping us from leveling the playing field and bringing noisemakers into our stadium?

I don't believe the referees can punish the team for anything the players do. That's why fans can yell at refs at football and basketball games and nothing can really be done other than throw the fan out if it gets too bad.

One thing I noticed this past weekend...no one got checked at the gate. At the student gates at BDS, (granted, it is the student gate), but everyone gets checked if you have on more than a t-shirt and jeans. They check boots, hoodies, purses, etc. At MSU, I walked in with my hoody, hands in my front pocket and no one said anything. The guy two rows behind me had a full bottle of liquor, not a mini bottle. I said that to say this, I think they don't check because if they did and found a cowbell, they would have to take it up, if they even would. Could it just be they say they just didn't see them when they came in?

Umm.. who cares? This is Mississippi State here, home of the "who let the dogs out" season under Jackie Sherrill.

Why would *we* need artificial noise makers or air horns or cowbells or scrambled eggs at BDS? That unfair advantage thing though, dead on. They got all of 3 points.

I am not trying to be argumentative, but again, who cares what MSU does? They are a speed bump on the way to other games and never have been and probably never will be more than that.

That's not correct. If the fans throw stuff on the field, etc., the officials can assess multiple delay of games penalties. In fact, if the rules haven't changed (I'll have to look), the refs can declare a forfeit, if the home crowd makes further play impossible. That said, after the NCAA granted the exception for cowbells to the SEC, and the SEC re-adopted the rule, there's been no serious attempt to enforce it. If you stick your bell in the face of the ticket-checker, then he'll have to take it up. If you tuck it in your purse or man-purse, they're not even going to try. It's ridiculous that they can get away with it. What if their "tradition" were those "thunder sticks," or air horns? They should be forced to depend on their vocal chords like everyone else. There, because of small defeated crowds and an open-air stadium, the noise would be insignificant...

I am soooooo glad that we don't have any kind of gimmicks like noise makers or gator chomps or that God-awful chant of FSU. All I want to hear is
ROOOOLLLLLLL TIDE ROLL!!!! And the Rammer Jammer is pretty awesome.

If you do not go to Starkville then why complain?
You sound like this guy from work that is always talking about how terrible the president of the US is doing in the job, yet he never votes.

I actually like the cowbells. It is not louder than when you go to Teneessee with those speakers and crowd. And it is a tradition that I hope never ends.

She plainly states she doesn't go because of the cowbells...and I don't blame her, it's damaging to the ears.

And she doesn't go to church because of a crying baby. Huh??? :conf2:

I agree that MSU is little more than a speed bump. Who cares about the cowbells? Once the fans realize the game is lost they start heading for the gates. End of problem.

I like SaraElizabethUA's analysis of the situation.

Thanks... This thought occurred to me when the band was screaming on third down on Defense and the MSU fans one section over kept staring... We were making any noise we could!

But they DON'T. They don't yell (for the most part) and shake the bell. Frankly, by the end of any game, I don't have a voice. Why would I scream at games if I had a reallllllly loud bell?

Thanks everyone for your replies and comments. By the way, I do attend church faithfully, and because human nature prevails, I am sometimes distracted if there is a crying baby (we have seven grandchildren, we've had to leave more than once with a baby to keep from causing any commotion) or someone coughing relentlessly, etc, or even once we had a bird flying around in the sanctuary....all present were distracted that day! ;)

Roll Tide!

The artificial noisemakers are only banned by the SEC and not the NCAA. B/c of this the ref's can't flag the fans for using them. They can only be taken up at the gates when seen. That is the way it was explained to me by a SEC official I go to church with.

As for Rammer Jammer.... I think it shows no class so I do not participate.

I have to ask though...would people still be defending them if MSU could pack 90k fans in their stadium? Is is simply because they don't have as many fans and, as a result, the noise isn't as bad as it would be at another school? If this is the case, I am not sure it's a particularly defensible ruling.
