Hi everyone...I'm not sure if this is appropriate to post on the football board, but I think you all should be aware of this scam.
I, like many other people have been looking for tickets to the Penn State game and have found quite a few sellers on Craigslist selling 4 tickets for $600.
I figured that's a pretty good deal so I contacted a few of these people. They seem legit at first, because they seem like they could be Tide Pride members. I started noticing that all the response emails started out with them giving their name and location, and said they would only go through an Ebay agent. Okay, that sounds great and all, but the problem is Ebay doesn't have agents. They would also send me a bogus Ebay account of someone with good reviews. I contacted some of them and they all said the person stole their accounts.

Anyway, I just wanted you all to beware of this scam (of course beware of any online transaction), because I know a lot of people are looking for tickets (as I still am :) )
I actually commented the other day to someone on this board about him looking at the same tickets I was and if the seats were any good...that's kind of what got me skeptical about these people.
So I guess the moral of the story is, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is...beware of people selling 4 tickets for $600.
Dang I hate scammers.

This happens every year. They're always in a hurry to get the money. Last year, one guy was insisting he was in the states, when his IP clearly indicated that he was in Europe. (Or, worse yet, was using a European proxy.)

thanks for the warning...
i have just contacted someone regarding tickets from craigslist... they said they are in the UK and wont be able to make it for the game. they wanted to set up a private auction on ebay for me to get the tickets. i asked for a picture of the tickets and haven't heard from them since...
definitely not gonna do that now...
if only i can afford stubhub lol

Wow!! Last year for the National Championship game I almost bought tickets from someone doing the same thing on Craigs List. My wife was actually talking to the Western Union people when we decided we weren't comfortable enough to do it. I had been looking at the invoice they sent and noticed some misspellings and bad grammar that pushed me over the scam threshold...lol.

This thread makes me so glad I trusted my inner voice and didn't go through with it. We weren't able to find tickets but at least I know now that we didn't miss the game because I was being paranoid.

That guy was also running the same scam on Craigs List last year. You'd think he'd at least change his country. Why would anyone in Europe buy tickets each year that he can't use?

It's really a shame that something as great as craigslist (free online classifieds) gets abused by scammers to the point where the service gets a bad name.

I use craigslist a lot, and the rule of thumb is: always deal locally, and cash only. It's an awesome service if you can meet the person face to face to do the deal. Otherwise, forget it.

It's funny but I just got contacted about a video camera I am selling from someone claiming to be a US citizen, but there English was so broken you could hardly read it. They had a long-winded story about being in a wheelchair, losing 2 kids in a car accident. Their IP address was from Nigeria... :rolleye2:

Just curious, how are you guys finding out where they're from?

If you know someone's IP address you can go to somewhere like here. The city may not be exact but the state and country will be.

EDIT : People can always use a proxy server to hide their real location.

I know it's not high tech, but I've always had great luck scalping tickets. I've never gotten ripped off and have only once gotten bad seats and then made sure I brought the seating chart with me to check location. We scalped tickets at MSU last year for $100 a piece, and me and the wife sat on the 50 yd line (I'm still hearing cowbells). If I'm not with the wife, I'll hold out until closer to kick off and try to get a better deal, but I've never paid more than $125 each even for LSU last year. I've never seen tickets at a reputable online dealer like Ticket Stub for cheaper than I've been able to scalp them.

Technically i think you are the scalpee, not the scalper!

Welcome to TF's by the way.

Welcome to Tidefans.

I had some good times at the old Flora-Bama. Haven't been since they rebuilt it.

It'll never be the same without the old cinderblock building. Nothing better than a cheeseburger and a cold beverage in there while listening to Rusty & Mike. Good times.

Yeah they could use a tunneling website too. I kinda meant how are they getting the ip's of them???

My email account is hotmail, and you can see the originating email IP address for any email received. In hotmail, there's a "View Message Source" option under the "Actions" menu that shows LOTS of details, including the originating IP address. As people have pointed out, there are ways to hide your IP address, but many scammers aren't that sophisticated.

thanks, that's good to know. i deal with craigslist a lot back home.

Yes skibama that was you and I talking a few days back. Like you said I had a few others with broken English saying we could go through a freight company for payment:-) or I could pay ebay and they would hold the funds until I received the tickets..Oh that's how it works:-) here's the actually email that was sent when I asked about the tickets Hi,

My name is Kyle Giglio and i am located in Richmond, VA.

I am selling all 4 tickets for $600. If you are interested to buy these tickets i will do this transaction only through eBay ( Please check my feedback on eBay. My eBay id is : roadtraveller59).

In order to start the transaction i will need your full name, address, your ebay user id and your phone #. They will send you an invoice how to purchase the tickets from me.( You will have to send the payment to an eBay agent. They will hold the funds until you will send them the confirmation that you received the tickets and they are real).

I will send the tickets via UPS overnight.

The total price for all 4 tickets is $600 including shipping.

thank You

@therebel, yep, that's the same guy. Same exact email too. I tried to play it out a little and see what he says, but he won't return my emails anymore...shocking. :)

thanks for the warning...

Saw that one before the 2008 SECCG I think. I've sworn not to use Craigslist for any ticket buying. Only way I would consider is if the seller was local and could meet me. These folks should be fined.

Even face to face is not always the answer. Year before last's IB, my nephew and I saw four shifts of ticket-holders try to sit in the row in front of us. The guy who had the real ticket finally just asked the guys who'd bought counterfeits from a scalper to hold their tickets up next to his. The difference was clear, when they were side by side, but it would have been difficult to tell, if you were just looking at the counterfeit. Of course, those people were in the stadium, so I'm sure they found someplace, even if it were SRO...
