I was reading the ESPN article on Clemson and Dabo, and especially his take on the transfer portal. One of Dabo's quotes was "We've done it in a unique way," Swinney said. "Now people want me to go do it some other way. They've lost their freakin' mind. I'm not doing it another way."
I couldn't help but think how quickly college football shifts, and if coaches don't adapt, the program quickly slips away. One of the big reasons Saban dominated for so long was his ability to adapt to the changing game. Coach Bryant faced a similar challenge and adapted. Any coach that is not willing to adapt to the changing game and rules behind it, will rather quickly fade away. I think Dabo has become the epitome of this.

I think Dabo is a good coach, not necessarily the top level. His teams are competitive but it was quarterbacks Watson and Lawrence who really won those championships. Generally if you have a QB good enough in college any coach can win a championship. Chizik certainly proved that. The brilliance of Saban's championships can be seen by the diverse QB's he won it with. His old school approach belongs at a lower level. The power 5 at this point is a pro sports league.

Dabo is going to fail, and I would say it's 50/50 that he will be gone by the end of the year. At this point, I don't think he's going to change his refusal to use the portal. Not sure if it's stubbornness or a genuine belief that he can just rely on recruiting. Either way, it's doomed.

Obviously, it's a hill he's willing to die on, and in a weird way I respect him for it. I hate the transfer portal and the ease at which players can move. I miss the days, which weren't that long ago, where it was rare that a player transferred. Dabo's refusal to use the portal, at least in my mind, is different than a coach's refusal to change offensive or defensive philosophy.

Dabo’s fate was sealed when he said “We signed over 20 high school transfers” referring to their recruiting class. The guy just doesn’t get it.

I don't like it either but it is a reality of the game that isn't going away anytime soon. So if Dabo wants to remain a coach of a championship level program he better start adjusting to the times because other teams are using the portal to get their three to four players that take them to the next level and not only closing the gap on Clemson, but passing them.

Dabo is 100% done when it comes to being an Elite HC who has Clemson in the Top 5 year in and out with legitimate shots at a NC.

But he might still hang around for a while.

He's at Clemson.

They had a good run in the 80's with a few ten win seasons and a GREAT run with Dabo pre-portal/NIL.

But in between they avg being a 8-4 to 7-5 type of team.

He's probably going to have to hit that 6-6 or 5-7 barely make a bowl range for them to fire him.

Yes, I can always respect a guy who's willing to stick to his guns, especially if he knows it could cost him his job. Saban adjusted along the way to some degree even though he hated to do it. In the end though college football changed so much that Saban got tired of adjusting and called it quits.
