My favorite posts are always predict-the-future posts that completely sideline the Xs and Os of football, the current difficulty of managing NIL rosters, and attempt to crystal ball a future assuming a straight line from the a last few game outcomes.

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you're a $10 million/year head coach for one of the most storied football programs in history, and in less than one year and four games (into the second season) you've already had five games where you, your staff and your teams looked completely unprepared. Not one person on this board (or any Bama fan I know) minds losing as long as the team looks prepared, plays hard, is competitive, and we just lost. But there will never be any leeway for showing up with a team that looks unprepared, plays unprepared and the coaching staff appears to have no clue either. There will NEVER be, or should be, any leeway for that. It also doesn't help your case when other coaches at other P4 programs are doing better with less resources and less talent than you are.

Everyone here wants CKD to succeed, but they're not going to blindly follow and cheer on someone when they've seen some of the things that have been displayed by this staff and team for going on two years. Again, this isn't Iowa St where winning 8-9 games/year gets the coach an extension and a raise. It gets you fired at Alabama. Those aren't my rules, it's always been that way and it being that way is what has been part of what keeps up the program's championship standards and expectations. Bama fans are the most passionate in the game, they know good football when they see it and they know bad football when they see it as well. When they start consistently seeing good football, the accolades and support will follow. It's called earning it. Nick Saban had to do the same thing when he first was hired and once he earned the fans respect, he got it in spades. DeBoer is going to have to do the same thing and whoever comes after him will too.

I agree with almost everything you wrote. As a 55-year-old, lifetime Bama fan, I understand Bama football expectations as well as anyone here except the few who can regale us with stories of the Ears Whitworth days.

But here's where I disagree. I don't think we should hold last year against CKD. Full stop. Just call it a transitional year. We weren't going to win big with the problems we had, even if CNS, Paul Bryant, Knute Rockne, Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh, or Don Shula had coached that team.

I'll give it to you that the FSU game was really bad, but even now it appears they are 1000% better than last year and the further we get from that game the less it bothers me when you add that the other two games have been the kind of football we expected. CNS and other coaches have always said you improve the most between game 1 and 2 and we've seen that.

We may lose to Georgia, but I don't think it'll be because we play like we did against FSU.

That narrative can change Saturday. If it does, great, we've turned a corner. If it doesn't, and this guy sends them out there unprepared and he looks like a deer in headlights on the sideline.....we're in trouble the rest of the year....in all road games especially. Missouri, South Carolina, Auburn.

If we lose to UGA, we better go down swinging. If we look unprepared again.....there just aren't any excuses.

Cash is now king, so to remain competitive the players are going to have to be paid the maximum. Without great players no amount of coaching is going to win. If Georgia, Texas, Ohio St, and others can pay their players more we will never be back on top. This debacle called NIL has taken coaching and developing players off the table.

No Bama fan will think 9-4 or 8-5 is desirable, BUT, you make some great points regarding the time we need to give Debaor in the new, NIL era!

And when you combine the new 9 game SEC schedule, I think a 2-3 loss season will become more of the norm similar to how most of the best NFL teams will lose several games a year. It's because of the parity that exists more today than ever and the extended seasons we have compared to when teams only played 10 games in a regular season.

Here's some thoughts about DeBoer:

He's 50 - same age as Joey Freshwater, only DeBoer's daddy isn't a Hall of Fame coach.

Here's the thought that bubbled up in my hat holder the other day: everywhere he's been the players have been hungry to win, did he ever stay anywhere long enough to establish a culture? If Wikipedia is correct he's never really had to build/rebuild a culture because the guys were willing to do whatever was necessary to win and he moved up the ladder of coaching to a more prestigious job.

DeBoer's tenure at Alabama will be determined by his ability to repair the cracks in temple of Saban, and establish a winning culture in the face of NIL and unlimited eligibility and transfers. That's not an easy task unless you're Oregon or an oil school.

I think his coaching style is being challenged, and he's having to make a decision to either stay the same or adjust. I've heard several reports on podcasts that he is making adjustments to his coaching style. It's been reported he's more intense at practice and getting into players' butts more. So, just with that little information, it seems he may be figuring out his coaching style needs to adjust to produce the success he's had everywhere else. Germie Bernard was interviewed this week and asked about CKD's change in demeanor and he confirmed it. Bernard and Brailsford have the viewpoint of seeing how he was at UW and now seeing him at Bama. Bernard said there's definitely been a change. Which is a good thing. Any coach worth his salt will adjust where he needs to adjust in order to be successful. The rest of them don't stay employed very long.

To keep to board policy, I've been told his language has gotten more "colorful". It seems the FSU game not only opened up our players eyes to some things but also our Head Coach.

Yeah, my guess is the week after the FSU game, he felt "heat" and "stress" he's never in his coaching life ever even imagined could exist. It probably made him go to the bathroom, look in the mirror, and say, "If I don't get this fixed and fixed fast, I'm going to be fired".

There's a lot of truth to the old saying, Nice guys finish last. The SEC is not a place to come and treat every player like you are their grandpa.

There are A LOT (and I mean A LOT) of very good to elite athletes that simply cannot handle being coached "nice". Their nature is to slack off, rebel, act up, not put in the work, shortcut everything and overall not do what they're supposed to do. You can see it at a very young age as well. Most kids I coach at the travel ball level, you can't "coddle them" or "be their friend". They will let up in their effort in a heartbeat, and many of them will take advantage of you. My guess not much changes when they get ot college. You have to ride their butts more times than not.

And think about the challenges of doing that with millionaire players now!

The GOAT left the Dolphins because he couldn't motivate paid players. He excelled like none ever before him when he could hold a talented player's feet to the proverbial fire with the trust that if they did what he said, he could turn them into millionaires in the NFL. And the more he did, the easier that became for him.

Enter NIL and the portal and everything now is flipped on its head! Our coach is having to figure this out as he goes...just like every other coach who entered major league coaching before NIL. The difficulty of this prospect is what sent CNS into the talking chair!

It's crazy to consider the changes they have to navigate to get through to these guys!

May seem silly to say but if he loses to Vanderbilt a second time I think he is history. I give credit to Vandy being a much better team but Bama should never lose to Vandy ever!
