DePriest Benched

One thought that I had was perhaps Depriest thought the kickoff was supposed to go to the other side of the field?

If true, this is just one big cluster of fudge. Something has to change next year.

Maybe we ought to try kicking it straight into the endzone :)

If true something must be done soon, like before the 9th of Jan.
I see no reason why starters wont be getting reps in special teams during the layoff.

I'm sure his family cringed when CNS yelled at him from the sideline. But he is on a national stage, it is a school of hard knocks, and he'll learn. I would give anything to be yelled at by the Alabama HC in an Auburn game!

Same here. I took abuse at a level a lot lower than Alabama!:)

No doubt. The shock by some people of a player getting yelled at is puzzling to me. I got my butt chewed on every level I ever played, and so did everybody else.

I know when we'd come into the dugout after a bad inning if coach was standing up off his bucket we would be catching the wrath and we did. We deserved every bit of it too. Kids like DePriest know it's all apart of the game when playing for an old schooler like Saban, I'm sure he learned that after the first practice or two!

I'd rather play for a coach that will get on my tail.

We have been lousy on kickoff return coverage for the past 3-4 years with different players. The players we put on KO coverage are typically good athletes that run fast and aren't afraid to lay a lick on somebody. The players over the past 3-4 years are different, but the coach over this unit remains the same.

We've had 12 players on kickoff and punt teams, timeouts due to confusion, and general disorganization of the special teams. We need to place a coach over special teams that is organized and can produce at least above average special teams play.

Yes, occasionally we will have a player like DePriest make a mistake that will cost us. But the overall performance of special teams is bad for an otherwise well coached team.

This young man will learn, and I think he will be a superstar. He almost broke into our linebacker rotation as a true freshman. Now, that wouldn't have meant nearly as much during the Shula years, but we have the best group of linebackers in the country right now, and he still seemed to almost make the playing rotation as a true freshman. We have had so many blowouts this year that several of the young guys like DePriest and Sunseri have gotten a lot of playing time. Sunseri played quite a bit yesterday in Barron's absence, so that should help next year when we lose a lot of experience on the defensive side of the ball.

agree.

On that same KO Cade Foster ran on down there right on the heels of the first wave instead of hanging back as our safety. I'm sure that will be addressed too.

Sometimes I wonder if one reason his kicks aren't what they should be, is that he is too worried about trying to make the tackle.

Depreist will learn and be fine. He will be an impact player with a lot of playing time.

In championship games special teams play can either win or lose "you" a game. This is where LSU will have a major edge on us in the BCSCG and it could very well cost us again. When playing against teams like LSU margin for error or "let up" is razor thin. As we saw in our November meeting PUNTS are big plays!!!

I do not think that DePriest is that concerned. He is a true freshman playing out there and the pressure is huge for young to be expected to perform. It says something that CNS has that much faith in him and that his expectations are so high.

Exactly. No matter how highly rated you were in high school, freshman are always gonna make those kind of mistakes. He will have a much bigger role next year.

I agree. I think he is a talented young player, who made one mistake and it cost his team. With more playing time, he will be very good, I feel.

Not one mention that this was strike 2 for Trey. The first punt he got a really bad block in the back that was totally unneccessay and after the play was over. I'm sure that didnt go unnoticed by CNS. Being responsible and accepting consequences is part of the "Process". Also, CNS seems to be hardest on those he expects the most from. I wouldn't read too much in to it other than that.

The thing that we need to make sure that we don't overlook in this whole situation is that if we had a kicker who could consistently put it in the endzone on kickoffs, this wouldn't even be an issue.

That shows you how much Coach pays attention to each play and player as the play is happening.......He noticed real fast who was out of position.........He has already talked to Depriest about it all and what not to do next time.....

Not to take anything from Saban, but lets be honest, even the graduate assistant knew who messed up on that play...
