Re: Anyone else sense last night that this has not been a very good week of practice?

Based on what, exactly?

When is Coach Saban in a good mood? :)
Saban was in a very good mood the radio show before we beat Florida in the SECCG. That's the first time I really noticed his moods on Thursday and how the team performs on Saturday. If they practice well and do what they are suppossed to, he's in a good mood.

I'm starting to think this team has a maturity problem. We play probably our most complete game of the year last week (minus the fumbles anyway), and turn around and have (apparently) a bad week of practice/focus this week. It's been a bit of a pattern this year and I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see us struggle on Saturday. We'll see. Maybe the senior leaders can step up and get the attention of the young bucks before Sat. night.

To me, this is a key indicator of what's going to happen on Saturday...I watched it with Coach Stallings, too. Seems to be something about great coaches that just give off this vibe when things really aren't going well (or when they are going well, but they do a better job of hiding that), whether it's what they say or how they say it, or what they don't say.
From this I take away that this game is going to be much closer than some expect. And uncomfortably so.
And I hope the team can get whatever is going on internally under control; it is not normal for CNS to speak out about teammates having issues with each other. If not remedied, well...it won't get better by ignoring it.

Odds are you're probably right. Nothing on the field of play seems to point to who the immature ones might be but there definitely must be some issues going on behind the scenes. They'll either work it out, get it together and have a chance to have a great season or they won't and more than likely will cost us a game or two. Because ultimately problems off the field make their way to the field. You can bank on that.

How do y'all feel about Lindsey& Kelly alternating at the C position, personally, I'd rather Lindsey get all the 1st team reps so it gives the OLine a continuity& Lindsey gets the needed reps to become an even better C, and then let Kelly come in with the 2nd team when they come in..I will trust however Coach Saban does it though..JMO
TM I almost agree with you on leaving Lindsey in, but then again - imagine what confusion having two that good can cause the other team - RTR

That's exactly why I never bet on college games, it's hard to factor in the maturity level in college games, and when those maturity level problems bites a good team on the backside & cause a sure win to become a loss..That's a swing of millions & millions of dollars to the bookies..

Yeah, Arkansas isn't as bad as their losing run makes them look. They have problems but their DEs, OL, and RB are ready for SEC play. Saban's comments on paper from last night seem to suggest he didn't like the buy-in from the plays this week.

Yep, sometimes, unfortunately, it takes lining up and getting your collective butts whipped on a given Saturday to get everyone`s attention. It could easily happen this week.

I don`t know enough about the culture that CNS creates, but I wish it was such that the player leaders (McCarron, Mosely, etc) could go to CNS and say, " Coach, we want you to sit so-and-so until they get their heads screwed on straight". I`d bet anything that Pat Trammel would have done it with Coach Bryant if it was needed.

I had often wondered that too. Some on here seem to worry to much. The man has a plan and it's called "The Process".
We all know we're going to lose a game again eventually, we're just voicing our thoughts as how to avoid that loss & keep the current winning streak alive, this is a football discussion forum, and that's what we're doing..It's not so much worry, as it's us just fans being well fans of Bama Football, that's how I look at it anyways..

I agree I don't think a player should lose his job when he's injured however when he gets outplayed in his absence I think it's a different story. JMO
Im guessing that Coach Saban still thinks that Kelly is the better fit for the team, and wants to get him back into playing mode after a couple weeks out of the lineup. There is a reason that Kelly won the job from the start.

I have a gut feeling this game is not going to go well for Alabama. Arkansas isn't as bad as they really played last week and I do think the team has issues focusing on lesser apponents at home for some reason. If they get their run game going early it will limit our offensive snaps. After that all they need are a turnover or two to turn this into a fourth quarter game.
You think that Arkansas beats us?

We win this game comfortably.

Yes, Arkansas IS that bad.

The teams they've beaten were UL-Lafayette, Samford and Southern Miss.
...not exactly murderers row right there.

I don't think anyone thinks Arkansas will actually win, but they could make it closer than any of us would like. Look, this is a team we should dominate, maybe not as much as UK, but comfortably. If that doesn't happen, our maturity concerns may very well be valid. It won't bite us this week, but if they don't start being more consistent it will bite us eventually, probably when LSU comes calling.

And if my memory is correct they were trailing, or at least tied with, Samford going into the 4th quarter. Arky is that bad and quite frankly I don't see Bielma getting them anywere near the level that Petrino did. Petrino may be a scumbag but the guy can coach a football team. Bielma was a very bad hire, IMHO.

I think JessN or one of the other mods who have a bit of inside info hinted at that Kelly more than likely won the job based on upside. That it was a tough battle to who the starter was going to be and the deciding factor may have well been the staff felt Kelly's ceiling was higher than CL's.

But's there no doubting that CL's style of play is more physical than Kelly's.

Re: During "Hey Coach," CNS Says Lindsay and Kelly will Share Duties on Saturday

Several years ago we started Jeff Dunn over Gary Hollingsworth. Dunn was decent but our offense went to a new level once he was injured and Hollingsworth took over. I believe it was the same year that Siran Stacy started out second to either Chris Anderson or Murry Hill. It was obvious that Stacy was the better back in the first game but it took 2 or 3 games before he was given the starting nod. Coaches make these decisions based on several factors but sometimes they are wrong. I'm sure Coach Homer Smith, who I happen to think is one of the greatest offensive minds in college football over the past 25 years, had good reasons for Dunn and Anderson/Hill to start over Hollingsworth and Stacy. But when those two got their opportunity the team became much better. Same for Ryan Kelly and Chad Lindsey. It was obvious that once Lindsey came in to replace Kelly that the OL began to gel. I do think Kelly is a good center with a bright future ahead of him but unless his game has been elevated to a higher level since the injury the job is Lindsey's to lose.

Re: During "Hey Coach," CNS Says Lindsay and Kelly will Share Duties on Saturday

I think we are making a bigger deal than it really is as to who starts at center. That will be worked out in time by who clearly plays better. Film doesn't lie. CNS is no ones dummy here. I think I'm more concerned with JMN81's post about a couple of players not talking to each other (from Saban on Hey coach). A lot more to team dynamics than meets the eye. Can't look at film and get to the root of good or bad Team Dynamics. As others have stated in this thread this seems to have plagued us all season. If you buy into the team concept you give up individual wants and thrive on team accomplishments and the process. Clearly this team seems to have difficulty settling on who the team leaders are. Glad we have CNS and am confident he will do right by the young men who makes up our team. Roll Tide Roll.

That's actually the best & most likely true as to why Kelly won the starting spot in the 1st place, cause when you compare actual game fim & reps between the two, Lindsey has looked the best & simply looks better between the two..Some players don't show how good they truly are in practice for some reason, and when their number gets called in an actual game, it's like a light comes on, and their full potential comes out in real time game reps..

I would speculate that's the case here with Lindsey..And I hope he is named the eventual starter at some point, cause that would be a huge boost to his ego, and will make him play that much more harder & become an even player when game time rolls around..JMHO

Re: During "Hey Coach," CNS Says Lindsay and Kelly will Share Duties on Saturday

You make a valid point & I agree with ya to an extent, but, our OLine has found an identity with Lindsey at the center spot, that was missing with Kelly as our starting C, I have no problem with Coach Saban alternating them, as long as it doesn't mess up that continuity & really good strides we've made with our OLine since Lindsey has become our starting C..
I agree, I wish CL played every snap from now on, but for team harmony he's going to have a little mini competition. I believe CL will win. I also believes coach knew AJ was better than Sims (the other) when they had the QB competition, but for absolute fairness and team harmony, he continued the competition into the season and all the players got to see 1st hand who performed better in the games.

No doubt coach has watched the game film, knows the line improved, and my gut tells me that he would rather just keep CL in there, but is doing this for team chemistry. We are talking about young men, and it's easy to split a team. He is doing the right thing, but as with AJ, I believe coach Saban already has a strong prediction.

You make a great point Greg, a situation like this can be extremely tricky as how to handle it, by splitting game time reps between the two, it can affect the harmony & continuity Lindsey has brought to the OLine, on the other hand, the players that have supported & wants Kelly to be the starter, can bring down the chemistry of the team as a whole, if he doesn't get meaningful snaps..I don't like having situations like this that can split a team into different camps in support of a certain player..Lets hope that won't be the case..I have faith Coach Saban will handle this situation correctly & do what's best for his football program.I have no doubts about that at all..

And I too hope Lindsey becomes the full time & exclusive C with the 1st string unit..Thatwould bring a much needed continuity with the OLine & allow them to gel with a full time starting C..
