Dylan Moses and his performance today

It was a very positive result for Moses today. He got reps, got a groove, all good things. I'd still expect some frosh moments against Auburn as they will likely attempt to fool him and exploit his youth. If we can minimize those we will still likely play a solid defensive game.

I will say that I was surprised when Moses ended up at ILB because he was hyped in recruiting - which I don't follow like I use to - as a quick twitch pass rusher type.

It kinda makes sense with how we've changed in the defensive front seven. We really need ILBs that can hit but move sideline to sideline.

One thing BOOGER over looked, yes it was mercer but the rest of the Defense was out there also. He was playing around guys who have been in big games, and done well. To even get attention, no matter the opponent, shows he can play good while surrounded by great players. To stand out on this defense is something. He may make some mistakes but his talent is awesome. YES auburn is better than mercer, but he played well relative to the other Bama defenders, so that says a lot. To be able to play on this defense and stand out says a ton. Yes, he is young but his talent is unquestionable. Here is to hoping he makes some big plays next week and makes booger eat his words. Someone send this booger comment to Moses, nothing more fun than making pundits look stupid LOL.

SDH and Foster were pretty good hitters, as is Rashaan Evans. They are also lightning fast. I don't think we've sacrificed much power in favor of speed.

Moses is also a true freshman which means another 2 years of biology and time with Cochran and he could be built like an ILB.

I agree, speed has been the focus but all of he new breed seem to be hitting just fine. (Haven't paid especially close attention to Mack Wilson.)

I definitely meant CAN hit AND run but didn't type that. Sorry! Fixed it.

And that's exactly what he was doing yesterday, Booger notwithstanding. However, IA is right. AU will try to trick him into over-pursuit...

I look back at C.J. Mosely as being the turning point in the way our ILBs are built...

I'd add that impact is a function of both weight and velocity, basic physics. It used to be thought that you had to have ILBs at least in the 260 range to fight off OLs. However, agility works also. Reuben Foster was rarely successfully blocked...

This^^^
In fact, an increase in velocity has a much greater impact than the same percentage of increase in mass.

DM is a generational talent. Yes, it was Mercer but CNS and CJP put him in a great position to AT LEAST not be a liability next week.

He got a full weeks reps as a starter, was calling out the defense, and was productive which boosts confidence. Now he gets another week of starter reps.

Playing along side Evans we just need Moses to be solid against aub, not a superstar. I'm very encouraged by this. It's a real shot in the arm for our LB unit.

I love how they let Moses play every down on defense for the first 2 1/2 quarters. Really well handled by the coaching staff.

Hey Booger. The ole interweb is a wonderful tool for research. Try it on occasion and you MIGHT not come across as a biased homer.

Frosh - Dylan Moses - 6'-3" 232 lbs.

Senior - Reuben Foster - 6'-1" 228 lbs.

Senior - C J Mosley - 6'-2" 232 lbs.

See? Dylan is a whole inch taller than Mosley. That means he's too lanky to be successful, yoh-yoh-yoh.mumble, mumble.

I think this just shows how idiotic a lot of the recruiting stuff can be. Moses played almost exclusively as an off the ball MLB or WLB (both ILBs in our scheme) in HS. He rarely dropped down onto the line as a pass rusher. He does not have the build of a pass rusher at all right now.

It's almost as stupid as cole cubelic saying yesterday during the broadcast that it hurt Evans development for him to be moved between ILB and OLB because he thought that Evans would be better in the tim williams role as an exclusive pass rusher, and leading the nation in sacks if that was the case. nevermind the fact that TW was 250lbs, and Evans has had a tough time putting in weight, and 235-240 has been his peak. No way Evans was going to get up into the productive range to be an edge defender (just like Moses)...

I said this in another thread after the State game that we need to simplify the defense somewhat for Moses to be effective as a true freshman. At least his role. That's exactly what Saban said they did this week and the results were obvious. We might not be able to run all the disguises and exotic looks but I think it makes a world of difference to play a simpler defense that basically enables Moses to play fast rather than playing a complicated defense where he's having to slow down and think to much. That's what happened in the State game and Moses wasn't very effective. If we keep it somewhat simple for Moses for Iron Bowl week and during the game he can flourish. Then by the time the playoffs start he should be able to do a lot more in terms of complexity..

I would definitely trade a degree or so of complexity if it meant allowing him to use that freakish athleticism that we saw last weekend. Granted, that wasn`t the equivalent of the barn, but he`s got all the physical tools. He covers a lot of ground real fast!
