Does anybody know enough about turf toe to know if there is a special wrap, brace, or whatever that would be used to protect/stabilize the toe? I would think that there must be something that would go in his shoe to help protect the foot and toe.

Great news, though, apparently on EL`s condition!!

We've had a bunch of threads on it, but Saban's remarks make a new one worthwhile. The answer is "yes." No protection is perfect, though...

If you do a search of the board using the search function, you'll find tons of info on EL's injury. As for protecting or "stabilizing" the toe, I don't know of anything that could do so without impeding his speed and running style and therefore put the joint at risk for further injury by doing so.

Staci, I don't remember where I read it now, but he is wearing a special shoe of some kind and they said he would be wearing it while playing. I remember thinking that it would have to impair his mobility some...

Yeah, I don't know how it can't. Anything that limits the natural motion of the joint is bound to alter his mechanics, even if it's just a little, thereby making him more conscious of the foot, dampening his instinctual moves, and putting him at risk of injury.

At least that's what I recall from my ortho training. Of course that was also in the early-mid '90's. Maybe they've come up with something so streamlined and flexible he's barely aware of it, but then how much support can it be providing if that's the case?

Darn turf toe! Such a pain in the butt condition!

That spin move that Eddie does is a thing of beauty. Does it contribute to the problem?
I would have to study film in slow motion to see how he's pushing off and with which foot. I don't think it caused the injury, but his recovery from the injury and surgery affects his natural moves. Most of these athletes have an instinctive set of movements that they bring to the field. For EL, that spin is very natural and reflex-like for him. My concern with his recovery is, unless he's 100%, his instincts are going to be over-ridden by conscious thought. That is going to naturally alter his body motion. When that happens, an athlete is more prone to either get reinjured or develop a whole new injury.

This is correct Earle. I spoke with someone and posted under the other thread that he would be wearing a special shoe. I have no idea what it will look like or what it does specifically to make the turf toe better or protect it.

Those were my thoughts exactly. I don't see any way the spin could have caused the injury, but it sure could exacerbate it. After my ACL repair, when I went back to basketball, I was conscious of my knee almost constantly. When I snow-skied, you could subtract "almost" from in front of "constantly." In fact that was a prime reason in our selling our interest out to a partner in our condo in CO...

I would think that this boot and Eddie's performance in it would have to pass CNS's "eye test" before he was considered "good to go". So I'm going to be an optimist and say it will have minimul impact on his performance.

Don't take it the wrong way because I really, really like Eddie Lacy BUT, with all the talent at RB on the sidelines, Eddie is going to have to really compete for playing time. I'm sure Coach Burns is going to give these young guys a good look especially the start of the season.

Im not saying that you wont be able to see a difference between his two shoes but more than likely it will be mostly a thickened, more rigid sole. Often times it is just a thin metal insert. It may slightly reduce his overall mobility but my guess is it will just be a matter of getting use the sole. Much like contacts, first time in your eye they feel an inch thick, soon you dont feel them at all.

I beg to differ just a little bit on the spin move.

if you're spinning toward the left, you push off with the right foot and there is stress on the inside joints (big toe) - this in and of itself isn't any more than a tradition hard cutback move, but does put pressure on the joint

then you land on the left foot and the spin starts, and there all the pressure is on the outside of the foot. no risk here.

however, the landing of the right foot at the completion of the spin is almost always on the big toe joint. it'd be pretty easy to stab it into the turf, or have the foot slide in the shoe enough to pressure the joint.

I remember seeing him after the spring game walking back to the bus and I thought to myself how dejected he looked . I think there will be a fire burning in him that will be hard to put out.I know that bama lost one of the best backs that has ever been there but I think we will be fine.We may be in for an offensive treat this year.RTR
