News Article: ESPN layoffs

I use a combo of Sling/Netflix/OTA antenna (1), watch ESPN for live events only (2), and have been so turned off by the tv side that I no longer visit their web site (3).

I feel like the number of people that those 3 things are true of is growing rapidly and hits ESPN in the wallet from multiple angles.

I think ESPN needs to follow the NFL Network model and fill more of its airtime with past live events and documentaries highlighting those events. America's Game on NFLN is fantastic as well as the Top100 countdown every year. I really don't even watch the NFL but I can always get caught up in the stories and plays from past great games.

I got Sling tv and use the Roku, just this past weekend. I love it. One of the cool things I can do is pull up old games on Youtube and its like I'm watching the live game.

I've cut the cord for good at this point, assuming the laws aren't changed. The only gap I've got to fill is to find a good HD antenna for the OTA channels.

Also, I get full 1080p with the Roku/Sling TV. I never got that with Charter TV (now Spectrum).

How much are you paying for Internet only from your provider? That's the problem in my area. It seems like when you drop to internet only they jack the price up. For instance, I have the AT&T Fiber internet (1000mbps) that's lifetime price lock at $80/month so long as I keep my direct TV service which is also $80/month. So $160 total for 3 TVs hooked up, HD DVR and Fiber internet. If I went to internet only with AT&T they would charge me $120/month. Just curious how people are actually saving money when dropping from internet + TV to internet + streaming service? I've looked into it a few times with different internet providers and I could save $20-$30/month but that's just not enough for me to have slower internet and less TV functionality. I see lots of people claim to save $100+ per month by cutting the cord and just wondering how that's possible? Maybe they started with a much higher bill than I have..

That's the problem for me and why I still have cable. It's cheaper to have both than just internet and I only have one option in my building (comcast). I have heard you can try to bargain down prices for just internet but no idea how successful that would be. I just wish we had Google Fiber in my area so I could be done with the Comcasts of the world.

They likely did. I'm getting Charter (Spectrum) internet plus, which they tout as 60 mbps. Over the weekend I tested it and I'm actually getting 65 or so (more than enough to drive this and our usual Internet consumption). By dropping our plan to only the internet, I'm paying about 65 bucks a month. I'm paying 30 for Sling TV's orange package, plus the sports and kids packages. So, altogether, I'm paying about 95-100 per month for Internet and TV, where I was paying 140 or so before. I went around and around with the Charter rep over the phone and the best she could do was get our bill down to around 105. But, with a new contract. I don't have a contract with Sling.

Same here Engineer. I'm paying $69.99 for Charter 60 meg internet plus about $140 on Direct. Of course that's 4 tv's at home on the Genie plus another box or two in the cabin. Of course I'm calling DTV to get rid of this Genie, it's garbage. I'm hoping to stay with DTV as I like their quality, but I ain't dishing out another payment before things change as we don't even get movie channels, etc.

You should have no problem with an outdoor antenna picking up the Huntsville stations. I live in Boaz and I get 19, 31, and 54 crystal clear. 48 is viewable most of the time. I have the old fashioned, square chicken wire on 14 ft pole with a 16 db inline amplifier. You should get 48 better than me since you are 15 miles closer. That is hiway miles, not sure as the crow flies.

My dad lives a bit south of you, still in Marshall County, and he is actually able to get the Tuscaloosa station. Which he loves because he gets the Tider Insider show with Rodney Orr.

Being reported today John Clayton was included in the layoffs five weeks ago. Such a horrible move.

Wow. I don't believe for a second that ESPN's bottom line is that bad.

I don't know, it's been said they GROSSLY overpaid for the NBA rights along with other rights. Colin Coward said (long before he was let go by ESPN) that ESPN got fleeced by the NBA and it would ultimately come back to bite them.

On the reception issue, I live on North Jefferson county and can barely pick up anything. That's the main reason I'm not using Sling and it's why I'll pick cable again in august.

I personally like Corso and it means football Saturday's in the fall for me. I have no issue with it even though his performance has suffered some due to the stroke.

I like Corse a lot too. However, he is a shadow of his former self, not that he can help that. Even 3 years ago it was painful to watch him. I don't begrudge him at all if ESPN wants to keep paying him and he wants to keep working. But when really good folks are being let go, and Corso is being signed to multi-year contracts? Something isn't quite right with that picture. It's like signing the veteran RB who had a few carries to a long term contract, and cutting the 3rd year player that just had a great year for you.

It's my theory that ESPN management is garbage. And I think we are seeing that play out. It's one thing to lose millions of subscribers due to industry upheaval from technological advances. It's quite another to double down on that with horrible management decisions.

I agree about his performance, however, I would think the re-signing of Corso is due to the ratings of GameDay and specifically his pick at the end of the show. ESPN execs are smart enough to know what shows/talent makes them money.

I have nothing personally against him but to no fault of his own. His performance on the show has been in such decline it is very hard to watch. Granted, I stopped watching Gameday. But the last time I did it was after his stroke and it was quite painful to watch.

Yea, I hate to say it but he is mostly a mascot at this point. I can't stand his takes (mostly because they are often incoherent) but do enjoy his personality and how he helps to keep it a little more lighthearted.

ESPN reminds me of the management team I worked for. I did not have input but sat in on many meetings. Our Management Team was so good that they never made mistakes. It was always our "ungrateful and unreasonable" customers who were at fault. I swear that is true. Sometimes it was all I could do to keep a straight face. Really, we had a loyal customer who gave us the great majority of his business for twenty-three years ..... and ..... and ..... the ungrateful swine left us! He didn't know good management when he had it.

Think about that. In a cut-throat business a long, long time customer leaves us and it is HIS fault he is disgruntled with our great management team. LOL. :)
