Hey folks...

We got a nastygram this week from the PTB in the UA Athletic dept telling us that we can no longer post any images from UA that are copyrighted to UA AD.

Seems like another brilliant PR move by them (given we send thousands of visits to the UA websites each week), but nevertheless, we will comply with this mandate.

Thus, effective immediately:

  • Remove ALL pictures from threads, avatars, and profile pics you have posted that have photos linked from official UA sites
  • DO NOT post any pictures or copyrighted material from any site
  • UA sites include UA.edu, Rolltide.com, crimsontradition.com, cstv.com, etc etc etc etc etc.
Any pictures that are posted in the future from these sites will be removed by our moderators and infraction warnings sent to you.

Failure to follow this directive will result in a warning and multiple warnings will result in suspension of your TideFans membership.

FYI, here is the email we received:

Recently it has come to the attention of this office that certain copyrighted material has been posted on your site. Specifically photos from Alabama football games. To protect the rights of both the University of Alabama the Athletic Department and the athletes we need you to remove now and in the future any and all photos that are copyrighted by the University.

Got it but talk about hard to moderate. All we can do is try.

Does this mean my UA logo avatar? I'll change it I guess, but this seems like a little much.

What next? They going to go after paintings of great Alabama games that foster grand memories and advertise the school and its tradition?

Sorry for an outburst, but are they serious? This is so silly. THEY ARE PICTURES FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!! It's a stinking picture. And it supports and "pays homage" to the players and the University. Some people need a REAL job.

I think it is only job of the guy who notified us. His email starts with "Picman."

I think we need his email address so we can complain. Like me I am sure many others here spend a lot of money on merchandise and memorabilia supporting our team not to mention tickets and game day activities:mad:. Those pictures and logo's are not sold and are used to promote the love of the team. I think this is an outrage. :mad2::mad:

Daniel Moore wins and the rest of us lose as a result, but I guess I'm not terribly surprised. This is no different than what the University has done to make parking and tailgating a major hassle on campus...just another Scrooge moment.

Edit: I guess we should be grateful for our few lumps of coal.

I am not sure that starting an email campaign would help. In fact, it might cause them to get really nasty. There are plenty of Alabama photos out there that are not hosted by or created by UA sites or staff...

I've removed my avatar as well. Guess I'll have to remove the pic from the LSU game from my 'desktop' too, huh ? :conf2:

Are they not aware that we, the fans, make their own jobs possible? Alienating the very fans that support your program is a very dangerous road to travel.....

Some of my comments from last week. I knew this was coming, it's part of the corporate take over of the web. The golden age of the net, which ended at about the time of the AOL /Time fiasco merger, is over.

Do a Yahoo search 5 years ago on Alabama and you would see fan site after fan site and free pertinent information, now do a google search and it's cluttered with corporate websites, merchandise and garbage scam sites that pop up on certain keywords.

The day of having the web for self expression and as a shrine to something you cherish, like the Crimson Tide is coming to an end. It is about the almighty $, cornering the market and figuring out new revenue streams and squeezing out every nickel you can by corporate types. The University tried to stamp out the internet audio of the games but finally gave up on that.

This angers me immensely, and is a grave mistake in my opinion.

Not to forget the many Alabama Crimson Tide websites that generate revenue through subscription and/or ad support :)

It's about cornering the market. Bama they would also enjoy receiving royalties from all websites that are strictly about Alabama athletics. Would that do more harm than good? I think so, and a lot of people took offense to the Moore situation. You could keep taking things a step further in the name of protection I suppose.
I was trying to think up some new untapped revenue streams, any help appreciated.

Charge a nickel every time someone says "Roll Tide"

Charge a one time logo memory flashback charge, so you can visualize the
teams logo's in your head without feeling guilty, or someone else making you feel guilty.

Charge a flat rate of a penny a letter on Alabama themed websites.

Charge twenty five cents for every "Yeah Alabama" whistled

Turn every checker board table at the county courthouse or local drugstore into Tide Pride tables with tier levels and charge $1 a game.

:)
