The other day on my local sporttalk show, they were discussing that Tennessee had basically "stolen" things that have been traditional for them.

Point 1. Their 'fight song" Rocky Top was stolen from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and adopted as their own.

Point 2. Many Vile fans think they invented the checkerboard endzones -- not so fast -- the checkerboard endzone was first noted in the late 1950's and early 1960's in Legion Field.

Point 3. They don't have a classic uniform or unique helmets (except for the copycats) like Bama so they keep changing theirs in the hopes of looking good but with that ooogly arange how can they ever achieve that?

Although I detest the color orange, it kept me from buying a new Ping G10 driver for those of you who follow golf; the shade of orange of their uniforms from the 50's and into the 60's was not near as bad as it is now with Halloween orange. It was a pale, yellowish orange not the puke orange of today.

Had not heard that before.

Does UTC still use it?

Rocky Top was written by a songwriter with the last name of Bryant. (Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. They wrote "Rocky Top" in only ten minutes in 1967.)

Contrary to popular belief, "Rocky Top" is not UT's official fight song, although it is so closely identified with the university that many believe this to be the case. UT's official fight song is a radically different tune called "Here's To Old Tennessee", adapted from the Yale University fight song "Down the Field".

That's funny. I must admit that the thought also crossed my mind because I have a blue bag! :eek2:

By comparison it was still a conservative shade in the 70's & 80's when looking at the flourescent crap they've sported the past 15 years or so . It makes me nauseaous . :p_eek:

I like this from Wikipedia:

"Operation Rocky Top" was the FBI's code name for a public corruption investigation into the Tennessee state government in the late 1980s which resulted in the eventual suicide of the Tennessee Secretary of State, Gentry Crowell, and the incarceration of several other individuals, most notably state House Majority Leader Tommy Burnette. The focus of the investigation was the illegal sale of bingo licenses.

The heck of it to me is, Rocky Top was a perfectly good bluegrass song--like multiple songs written by the Bryant Bros imo--until UT started playing it roughly 763 times per game. "Hey, look! The Coke guy did not fall down the stairs; let's celebrate with Rocky Top!" "The river did not overflow its banks and destroy this stadium; let's play Rocky Top!" "The Ref didn't throw a flag on that play; Rocky Top!" "The Admin didn't further shrink seat widths at Neyland Stadium in the past few minutes; let's celebrate with Rocky Top!" (etc.)

the last seat shrinkage was to adjust for the Americans with Disabilities Act. although, somehow they gained 700 seats instead of losing seating. most of the time, an ADA adjustment means loss of space for others due to increased space requirements for handicapped Americans. i.e. bathrooms, parking lots, etc.

also our Alma Mater I think is a borrowed tune.
The tune is "Annie Lisle," a ballad from 1857 about a young girl slowly dying (the presumption is consumption). In 1870, Cornell students adopted the tune for their Alma Mater "Far Above Cayuga's Waters." I don't know what % it is of HS and colleges' Alma Maters, countrywide, but it's very high...
