i have a perfectly good sense of humor (and a fun life) and was enjoying this thread until your earlier post needlessly brought race and politics into the discussion.
To quote the great American sage, Foghorn Leghorn: "That's a JOKE, son, a flag-waver. You're built too low."

Just let it go.

When a coach has to throw personal insults at his players and their girlfriends, he has already lost. If he meant it as a joke (and I don't think that he did), he should have limited his insults to his players.

Anyone here think that his players are going to listen to him any more as a result of this? If anything, he just lost the respect of any members of his team who care about their "fat girlfriends".

This is the kind of stuff that my 9 year old has already outgrown...

It's Mike Leach. Those players knew what they were getting into with him.

And as a fan, and this has more to do with tone than Leach's words, I would rather my coach get "fired up!", after a loss than not. I remember our last coach would say the same thing in the same way after every loss, it was extremely boring and was not therapeutic to the fans or players imo.

Coaches can actually defuse a lot of steam with what they say.

Agreed. Saying something like that publicly is stupid, and it's a good indication of why Mike Leach has never been anything more than mediocre except for a season here or there.

Not agreeing with what Leech said, but to say he is a mediocre coach is incorrect, IMHO.

Texas Tech is not known as a perennial powerhouse, and CML has put them on the map since he has been there. He has also transformed the Big XII into a spread passing league, he was the first to go solely to this style of offense...

If you're saying that Leach is a bad coach then IMO this comment either hit a nerve or you are unaware of Texas Tech's history.

Leach is considered probably one notch below the Saban's overall, but as an offensive play caller is considered one of the best in all of football.

Some of these guys are 21-22, and "fat little girlfriends" = future wives. Wife > College football. I thought it was pretty funny, and think Leach is a heck of coach, but probably not the best method for reaching your players. Men are very territorial of their women, and insults aren't cool from a coach IN THE MEDIA. Of course, many of them probably didn't take it that way. I think only the ones with fat little girlfriends were offended.

The comment didn't hit a nerve. I'm well aware of Texas Tech's history and their current recruiting ability. Again, it's a stupid thing to say in public. He's basically making fun of his players to the world. Say something like that in a private team meeting, and it's another story.

Put Leach anywhere in the country and he does not produce Saban's output, nor does he even come close to it. And that's an opinion I've had for a long time. He's never bothered with having a defense, and his offense is easily shut down by good defenses (I don't think you'll find many of those in the Big XII these days).

Perhaps he was responsible for transforming the Big XII into a spread passing league. And perhaps that's why their champions, more times that not, get beaten by teams from the SEC or USC.

I lived in Lubbock for 5 years and I LOVE THIS GUY!!! He is so outspoken, there's no telling what he's gonna say at his press conferences. There's one thing you have to know about Leach...he always has his Starbucks coffee cup with him...ALWAYS. Now the thing is it is rumored and speculated (confirmed by some of my friends who know him) that there is as much whiskey in that cup than coffee.....regardless this guy is PRICELESS.
