Question: Fourth down and 3 from the LSU 34 what is the Call?

Get in punt formation then shift into field goal formation. Do a direct snap to Cade and tell him to immediately run around the right end with 2 pulling blockers leading the way. The holder will be trailing for an option formation. If the option looks to be getting stopped either punt the ball immediately or do a drop kick for three points.

I know this seems as if it is the conservative and obvious play but ya know what they say, if it aint broke don't fix it...

give the foster kid a break. as if he didn't have enough to worry about with the chokefest on nov 5th and the prospect of having to make another pressure packed kick on the 9th and now you want to give the kid the ball instead of oh say...trent richardson. and you want our much maligned kicker to grind out yards against lsu's defense on a run play.

LOL
He is one of the first ones down the field on kickoffs. He was starting MLB on one of the best teams in the country during his high school career. He has the muscles and speed to grind out 3 yards when the LSU special teams/defense is discombobulated and expecting a play that we ran in September.

Some have mentioned a field goal. What about doing a similar play like we ran against Arky? Didn't Cade line up next to AJ in the Shotgun on that play? I say hand it off to him and let him show what he's made of.

Yeah, it sounds ridiculous, but do you think LSU would expect that? Me either.
of course, NOW the entire coaching staff knows our plan!!! CURSE YOU!

Blake Simms at QB, Jalston as FB, then Trent and Eddie split behind him in the wishbone.

Ok, seriously you go to the 6 man line and pound the ball with the best running back in the country. If you don't pick it up your defense can bail you out.

5 wide with Williams, smelley, and Trent on one side, bunched with Trent further back than the slot. Maze and bell on the other side, bell in the slot. Bell in motion to give 3 blockers, then run a qb draw up the gut, for a first down.

Do you really want the starting QB as pitch man on an option? Remember AJ is the holder and that's an invite to get him lit up.

I say pooch it;but since that is the only time we seem to get a 60 yarder off, I probably put in the .......a?......the?...... how about the infamous "jumbo pkg"?
Field goal! law of averages are with us.

The question that needs to be asked - do you dance with the one that brought you or do you dance with the one no one expects? (AKA - let Trent run or do something completely out of the ordinary)

Put Tret inthe backfield with 3 WRs and Smelley. I would be fine with a short pass to any of the 5 or a delayed run where Trent has a chance to find the hole. IMO, that formation for us would be extremely hard to be stopped for less than 3. If I were coaching, I know one thing for sure, I would never punt in that situation. We cannot waste those opportunities against LSU again.

Spike it! Sorry, you were speaking of what we would do. Spread formation, throw to Smelley, he's been there when we need him.

7-7 middle of 3rd - defense is playing well, so I'm confident I can hold them if I give up the ball at the 34. That leaves the option open for both going for it and attempting the FG.

From here, it's a 51yd FG, a difficult kick for a good kicker - low confidence. Even if I make it, it's just a 3pt lead - 1 play away from losing the game. Risk is high, reward is low, so the risk/reward analysis is not looking good for the FG.

A pooch will be difficult from this distance, likely to go into the end zone and end up on the 20. So I gain only 14yds of field position, and live for another possession. Still though, only 1 play away from losing the game, this time by only an opponent's FG rather than by a TD. Risk is low, reward is lower. Seems like that's playing not to lose, rather than playing to win.

I go for it. Best case, I earn a new set of downs and either play for a TD or for a higher probability FG than what I presently face. Worst case, I don't get it and end up with a similar result of a failed FG or pooch kick into the EZ. Risk/reward scenario much better. Question is: do I run or pass?

With 4th and 3 and TR in the backfield, they'll be expecting run. So I show the run. Play-action, with TE faking block then delayed route to the flat.

half way through the 3rd quarter and only 7-7.... defense is doing it's job. If we had a FG kicker that could kick the 49 yarder, then I would do that. But since we don't then I say punt it and try to pin them and let defense do what it has been doing. Still plenty of time left.

Me too. Inside the Superdome, no wind, thin air. Adds about ten yards to most kicks.
True, but I'm afraid that just means it goes outside the right or left upright about 10 yards higher. Of course, I think the dome does help us on shorter field goals (more confidence, greater height on the kick), but I simply wouldn't try a field goal of 40+ unless time were expiring. I'd punt if 4th and really long from the 32-36 yard line and I'd go for it otherwise. Obviously, this is not optimal in close games where every point is critical, but it's where we're at.

I wish nothing but the best for our kickers, but I don't think we need a repeat of last time, if nothing else for team morale. If we start missing field goals, that would be extremely deflating to the whole team.

If Cade has been nailing 50 yarders all month long then FG. No second thought about it. If he makes it fantastic. If not, then it's not like we're giving them the ball on our 20 or somethin. They had a terrible time driving it on us last time, what makes you think they could this time?

If he's looked sketchy as ever then I go two TE in line, run a shift with one coming across the formation to find out if they're in man or zone. Run a play action, boot out and have one TE come across the formation about 10 yards deep and the other running a quick out after selling the block. Read high to low and find the open guy. If it's not there, run it and who knows.
