This is great news. I loved watching Freddie play growing up, and believe he'll give Bama his all. Baker wasn't getting the job done on the on the recruiting trail, and seems like the D-line regressed on the field.

Not to sound crude, but is he known for being a good coach (not just a recruiter)? The recruiting prowess is wonderful, but once they're recruited the coaching becomes the most important. Can he coach?
Wonder if Baker is sticking around off the field to be a mentor?

He's a good coach and this is his vision: " Basically, his vision is for a defensive line that can attack from all angles. One that has the personnel to adapt to whatever a given opponent throws at Ole Miss — spread, a run-dominant pro style, etc"

but here's what my concern is: "Ole Miss finished 124th in the nation against the run last season. The Rebels allowed 245.33 yards per game, an average that ranked next to last in the 14-team SEC."

I don't know if it's the personnel at Ole Miss.. but we'll see if he works out with Alabama this fall.

Have to believe it was mostly personnel there.

I'll also say this, Roach mentions in the article about "getting bigger to draw double teams". Simply being big doesn't automatically mean that player will draw a double team, especially if one OL can show to handle him. The ability to penetrate and be disruptive isn't automatic simply because a lineman is 6'4 330 lbs. What our DL'men need is to learn how to use their hands, and get better at controlling their bodies to create leverage and angles to allow them to be disruptive.

This is what I noticed more than anything else. Davis was incapable of using his hands in a violent way to keep o-linemen off of him. Barmore was great at it. Barmore reminds me a lot of Q - violent hands and explosive at the LOS.

Did Davis get bigger last season and then only to drop lbs in the offseason and he started to play better?

I think he was talking about the personnel at Ole miss needing to get bigger... doesn't mean it would translate to Alabama.. Well, I hope not though. BB and B1G got a valid point though. Someone mentioned about how we need to use Clemson's techniques and I wonder if Roach teaches those techniques? Does anyone know how DL use their hands at Ole Miss?

Unfortunately Davis wasn't able to get better by coming back for his Senior year and you're right. He never could seem to get off blocks and you would think with his height, length and power he would have zero problem doing it. I'm afraid unless he gets with a team who can REALLY work with him in the NFL. He is going to get steamrolled by NFL O-Lines.

Is it possible he was giving half you know what effort? Not trying hard?

I'd say it was very likely. Granted, it's easy for me to say that in my recliner drinking a beer. But, there were too many times during the year it appeared to me that not just Davis, but several on the line were dragging butt. But I would think the coaches have a better view to determine that than I do and especially when they watch film.

All I know about Freddie is his charisma and hard play on the field as a player. He is said to be a great recruiter and this would be his 3rd stint with Saban so I am sure they know what they are getting coaching wise. More importantly, Freddie knows what to expect in the process.

All I can say is that I loved him as a player. He was one of the bright spots on defense during the dark times.

One year he would have had double digit INT's at LB if not for a cast he wore that might as well been a cinder block...Lol

I'm not even kidding.... at least 10-12 balls hit him right in the hands.

What we need is high motor, fierce defensive linemen. This unit probably holds the title along with 2013 as one of the least impactful DL units we've had under Saban. 2019 Alabama DL would've loved to have a Wallace Gilberry from the 2007 team or Ed Stinson from the 2013 team.
