Freshman head shaving?

I like the dreads, they add a bit of character to the player. I don't like to see the Yankees where every player looks alike, that's just boring. I like the Red Sox and Manny's big long dreads, now that's a team that's full of characters. :)

When I was in high school in Mrtle Beach, S.C. we would catch the incoming freshmen leading up to the first day and cut their gair. The first day of scholl they all would come in with shaved heads.

Most of you sound like someone's grandpa! Long hair? Don't you remember the 70s????? Barry Krause, Marty Lyons, Steve Whitman, Steadman Shealy, etc all had hair that was longer than 70% of the players on the team today.

Shaving the heads of a frosh is a good thing. It humbles them, reminds them of their place, and "welcomes them to the club." It's good for team unity.

It's a little bit of an odd situation at Bama this year in that a lot of the frosh are more advanced than most of the upperclassmen.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it's a penalty, NFL or NCAA, if a ball carrier gets taken down by hair that hangs around the shoulder pads.

Maybe if we saw more of that . . .

For some reason I love watching this play...

Call me old fashioned, but I can't stand those dreads

No, we got to have those dreads. I remember watching teams the last few years, and I noticed that players making big plays always had those dreads. I said then, " we got to get some of those". I don't care what their hair looks like if they can win.

the hair is part of the uni in the NFL....not sure about college ball.

um...I don't think so. I think it was Troy Palamalu with the Steelers got took down by the long hair on an INT return and the tackler was called for an unsportsmanlike foul. If my memory serves me, John Madden was frustrated quite a bit by it.

Just saw the post above...guess it is legal....
FWIW...I'd tackle em by it just to prove a point!

I appreciate tradition but I don't agree. It's 2008 and I think players should be allowed to have their own personalities as individuals as long as it's within reason. A haircut has absolutely nothing to do with football playing ability or desire. It also has nothing to do with the class and character of the player.

As far as team unity, a forced cumulative head shaving party may have worked 25 years ago, but today I think the players would perceive it as a violation of their rights.

And I would agree with that.

If they got together and voted to do it on their own, well that's another story.

As far as "humbling" the freshmen and "reminding them of their place"....well their place is contributing immediately to a football team...not being whipped into shape at boot camp.

Ten Hut!

It's voluntary of course...nobody should be forced to do anything they don't want to do.

We can agree to disagree. I guess times have changed.
