Frosh jersey numbers

The number of duplicates this year does seem much larger and it is pretty annoying. I know many of the freshman will redshirt, so it will not matter as much since they might get new numbers next year. However, the freshmen with duplicate numbers seem to be the ones that will play. Julio and Chris Rogers have 8, Barron and Maze with 4, Harris and Upchurch with 5, Lawrence and Hanks with 15. I hate to sound like a complainer but I hope several of them change numbers.

I think you can probably forget about that.

The major reason why we are giving out duplicate numbers in the first place is to help in recruiting. It has been no secret that one of the things that Saban likes to do on the recruiting trails is to promise the top-end recruits that they can get whatever number they wish. We saw that this past year with guys like Star Jackson, Burton Scott, Jerrell Harris, and others. And sometimes the only way that can work is if you have a few duplicate numbers here and there.

If it helps with recruiting, I'm all for it. I know it sounds small and minor, but apparently Saban feels it has a tangible impact on recruiting, so the small amount of confusion created is well worth it in my eyes.

I haven't checked every duplicate but of those you have listed all the duplicates will be playing on opposite sides of the ball. It is perfectly within the rules to have duplicates play in the same game even if the best player on offense has the same number as the best player on defense. They just can't be on the field at the same time. In my mind, BJ Scott is the only possible two way player I could think of right now. I'm pretty sure we won't see Julio in the defensive back field as he was for Foley occasionally last season. :eek2: I promise no one will be confused if Maze takes a screen pass for a long TD or if Mark Barron takes an INT for a TD. :p

As for a real silver lining, when you go to the Bama store and get a number 5 or number 4, ect., you can get twice the number for the same amount of money. :):BigA::BigA:

I never said I thought it was against the rules. I know I will be able to recognize the difference between Julio at WR and Chris Rogers at DB. All I was saying is that I think it is kind of annoying.

I think its annoying too. They dont let you have duplicates in the video game. The only thing is that all the top recruits always want single digit numbers, and we only have 9 of them available. This is a great problem to have, as we are filling up our roster with 5 star guys who want those numbers. If anyone has an idea on how to create more single digit numbers, please send your notes to peteswell4

On a lighter note though, it would have been fun to have Kenny Stabler still doing the games so we could hear that Julio Jones just picked off a pass, or Jerrell Harris with a 50 yard TD run.

I hope those mistakes happen. It would be great if Upchurch finally broke out or Rogers made a pick.
